%e DEAN d WOMEN ♦ ♦ ♦ MRS. JENNIE MORRIS HOWARD Assistant to the Dean of Women MRS. lONA B. BERRY Dean of Women The office of the Dean of Women attempts to as- sist women students in adjusting themselves to a new environment, in discovering and establishing sound values, and in stimulating a desire of building in themselves a sense of discrimination in conduct. Dean lona B, Berry coordinates the activities of this office. Mrs. Jennie Morris Howard is presently serving her fifteenth year at the University. She holds the position of Assistant to the Dean of Women. Mrs. Sue Gunter retired as Assistant to the Dean of Wom- en in 1949 after thirty-six years of service to the University. Further aid to coeds is given by Mrs. Bessie L. Hoyden and Miss Grace Baker, Counselors to Women, and Miss Emily Searcy, Acting Housing Director and Counselor to Women. Several women ' s organizations cooperate with the office of the Dean of Women in providing inter- ests and activities for coeds and in raising the standards of scholarship among these students. Pan- hellenic Council, WSGA, YWCA, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Mortar Board ore among the most active groups working through this office. Triangle, Sopho- more service organization, also cooperates. HENDRIX Dean of Students DEAN STUDENTS The office of the Dean of Students has the re- sponsibility of meeting the student ' s needs and prob- lems outside of the classroom. The office administers recreational, cultural, and educational activities such as the Concert-Lecture Series to contribute to the student ' s development outside of his instructional hours. Health, housing, and feeding facilities are maintained under strict supervision. The student is encouraged to attend church and receives religious guidance in the faith of his choice. Working with the desire to help the student at all times the office also handles cases involving disciplinary action. Dean Noble B. Hendrix has directed the office of Dean of Students since 1943. He holds an M.A. degree from Columbia University. The office in- cludes three assistants to the Dean. Assistant Henry J. Sikir is director of the Union Building and handles veteran ' s housing along with other duties. Assistant James E. Foy works in close cooperation with the SGA, with official campus publications, and directs the Con- cert-Lecture Series. Assistant Robert E. Tyler is in charge of dormitory accommodations for single men, class absence excuses and withdrawals for male stu- dents, part-time employment, and the social calendar. JAMES E. i. WILLIAM F. ADAMS ROBERT EARL TIDWELL DEAN OF ADMISSIONS AND RECORDS DEAN OF THE EXTENSION DIVISION Dean William F. Adams directs the Office of Ad- missions and Records, which maintains records for students in all schools and colleges of the University. Dean Adams is Chairman of the Class Schedule Committee and is in charge of all notices of holidays, class dismissals, and deferred examinations. In addi- tion to this, he supervises the mailing of grades at the end of each quarter and is in charge of mailing bulletins to prospective and active students. Dean Adams also directs field representatives who travel the state as informative agents for prospective stu- dents. A graduate of the University, Dean Adams form- erly served on the staff of the Mathematics Depart- ment. He has been Dean since 1946. Dr. Robert Earl Tidwell has directed the Extension Division for twenty years. He has served as Princi- pal of Ensley High School, State Superintendent of Education, and was for five years Director of the Educational Training Program for T. C. I. Dean Tidwell directs four University Centers located in Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Gadsden, serving citi- zens of the State who are not able to attend the Uni- versity in residence. Other departments of the Extension Division are Commerce and Engineering, Home and Family Life, High School Counseling and Guidance, Correspondence Study, Audio-Visual Aids, Club Study and Library Loan, Adult Education, Radio Broadcasting Service, and University News Bureau, all under Dean Tidwell ' s Supervision.
