CAPTAINS Seniors Doug Lockridge and Billy Caden- head were Alabama ' s captain and alternate captain in 1949. Though declared ineligible in midseason because of B. Team play in 1946, Doug was the lineman that the Crimsons chose to be their field leader. Cadenhead took over the job and continued the fine work. 1949 Captains Billy Cadenhead and Doug Lockridge Alabama ' s 1949 Crimson Tide, after a slow start, advanced rapidly in the darkening fall days and be- fore the Auburn debacle was ranked in the confer- ence ' s top bracket. Early season losses to Tulone and Vanderbilt and a tie with Neylond ' s Vols were soon forgotten as Duquesne, Mississippi State, Geor- gia, Georgia Tech, Mississippi Southern, and Florida fell before the advancing Crimsons. A three touchdown favored Tide bowed to an enraged Auburn team 14-13 in an inglorious finish but there were few who thought it could happen again in that manner. Sparking Alabama ' s attack were a pair of aerial aces, Eddie Salem and Butch Avinger. Ranked fifth in the SEC on total yardage gained, Salem averaged over five yards every time he ran or passed. He hit with 40 out of 75 passes for 558 yards and led the Tide in scoring with 51 points. Avinger connected with 26 out of 56 passes for 266 yards. In addition, the Montgom- ery quarterback starred in kicking and blocking. He finished second in SEC kicking with a 41.4 average. For his blocking he was honored as the conference ' s outstanding man in that port of the sport. ■I Greenie Bowi lo Rodd ALABAMA 14 TULANE 28 A fighting Crimson Tide struck through the air for two lost quarter touchdowns against nationally ranked Tulone, but the Greenies finally checked the late advance to win 28-14 before 35,000 persons in Mobile ' s Ladd Stadium. It was Tulane ' s third straight win over the Tide. Only sheer heart and opportunism kept the Tide in the contest that long as the Greenie machine ground out 435 yards on the ground and 92 in the air. Alabama had 65 by running and 1 10 by passing. Alabama pushed to the Tulane four in the opening minutes of the game but couldn ' t go over. Shocked, the Greenies sputtered along for almost the whole first half, finally righting themselves to score with two minutes remaining in the first half. After the Greenies had marched to two more scores Bama exploded through the air, Salem to Abston, covering 75 yards. Svoboda then returned the kickoff all the way. The Tide came back to score on a pass from Avinger to Calvin, set up by Hannah ' s blocked punt. Hannah, Mizerany, and Holdnak were the line stars.
