The purpose of its organization is to train super- intendents of schools, normal s:hool instructors, the teaiihers and pingiplzlls NM, of secondary schools. It is the natural out rowth of the epartments o p 1- m losophy and education, which department ivas established by the University trustees in the year 1899. ill The faculty at present consists of a dean, who is also pro- fessor of education: a professor of secondary education, and a professor of vocational edu- cation. Along with these, various professors in the College of Arts and Sciences give courses in the teaching of their respective subjects. IH The vocational department of the School of Education, the most recent addition to the department, was established, in 1918, for the express purpose of training teachers for the trade and industrial schools now being estab- lished in the state of Alabama. Ill Students who complete the prescribed academic and professional work will, upon graduation, be granted by the State Board of Education the Class A professional certificate for teaching in secondary schools.

QI Forced at first to occupy mere 570 it shacks abandoned by military forces in 1918. the school is now housed in QR C ,Nb the newest and one of the most handsome buildings on the campus-Nott Hall, The twenty students who matriculated for the first year's work re- ceived their training from a faculty of three men. Nearly one hundred students enrolled for the current session. and the faculty has increased to fifteen. ill The aim of the school is not merely to equip men thoroughly with a working knowledge of the fundamental medical sciences: the spirit of original investigation is strongly encouraged. Facilities are such that extensive work of this nature is now being conducted. The Gorgas Medical Society, composed of the members of the sophomore medical class, is a potent factor in the development of those who would be acquisitive in the varied and attractive fields of med- ical research. ill With the Hrst two years of a medical course so firmly established, it is but in the nature of things that authorities have definite hopes and plans for the early establishment of the last two years of a full and complete medical course.
