For many years thereafter its library consisted of a few hundred volumes mainly old editions of text-books donated by the bar of the state At that time the faculty consisted of two part time men fll Slowly the standards and equipment of the school have been strengthened until today its curriculum embraces three years and its ln . . 1. I Lf - . I xX - , ' entrance requirements have been' raised to one year of college credit, with two years in 1926. Its library contains more than six thousand volumes, mainly state and federal reports. On its faculty are three full-time and two part-time instructors. Ill During its life of nfty-two years this school has shown a steady advance in all its phases. In no wise has it been unmindful that its purpose is ro train men better ro serve our stare as members of its bench and bar.- lll For the future, an increased usefulness to the state is seen. The time is not long distant when a separate building will be provided for this school and when its requirements will be still more rigid: thus will an ever-increasing number of better trained legal minds be produced, to redound to the majesty of the courts and to the honor of Alabama.

For ' the industries of our state---the steel mills, the railroads, the blast furnaces. the hydro-electric companies, the coal and coke producers, the manufac- turers and the road builders-need masterful men. They need leaders to di- rect to useful ends the vast human energies and the great sources of power in nature. ill The College of Engineering gives instruction in the fundamentals ofyscience and of economics, skill in engineering technique and discipline of character. ill The laboratories of the College of Engineering have been designated, by the legisla- ture, as the oflicial state testing laboratories. In the well-equipped laboratories of the School of Mines, investigations are being carried on by students and members of the fac- ulty, in co-operation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The present research on iron ore beneficiation is expected to result in great benefit,to the iron industry and will promote conservation of the state's mineral resources. In the physical, electrical, and chemical engineering laboratories experiments are being made, in co-operation with the industries of the state, to determine improved methods and new uses for materials and power. QI Forced at first to occupy mere 570 it shacks abandoned by military forces in 1918. the school is now housed in QR C ,Nb the newest and one of the most handsome buildings on the campus-Nott Hall, The twenty students who matriculated for the first year's work re- ceived their training from a faculty of three men. Nearly one hundred students enrolled for the current session. and the faculty has increased to fifteen. ill The aim of the school is not merely to equip men thoroughly with a working knowledge of the fundamental medical sciences: the spirit of original investigation is strongly encouraged. Facilities are such that extensive work of this nature is now being conducted. The Gorgas Medical Society, composed of the members of the sophomore medical class, is a potent factor in the development of those who would be acquisitive in the varied and attractive fields of med- ical research. ill With the Hrst two years of a medical course so firmly established, it is but in the nature of things that authorities have definite hopes and plans for the early establishment of the last two years of a full and complete medical course.
