For the first forty years of the University's life this college was the University. It is the original central organization, around which have been grouped during the past lifty years the other schools and colleges that help to make up the University as it exists today. ill The aim and purpose of this college is. as it has always been, to prepare young men and young women for life in its broadest sense: to give them such fundamental training of mind and heart and spirit as will enable them to become centers of influence for good through- out the state and the nation. The other schools and colleges of the University have as their primary purpose the making of lawyers. doctors, teachers, engineers, business men. The College of Arts and Sciences strives to give to its students a broad general culture. to make them intelligent, liberal-minded. public-spirited citizens. lll'This college has of late years been limiting the range of a student's electives. The result is that an A.B. graduate Of today has not only acquired some familiarity with half a dozen of the main branches of knowledge, but has also attained a considerable mastery of one of these branches. He has by this means made some advance towards that long since unattainable ideal of edu- cation: to know something about everything, and everything about something.

It has furnished to Alabama its leaders both in peace and in war. It is a treasure house of established facts and fundamen- kdxf Wil tal principles, a place organized for new truth, a steadying force of civiliza- M C fi tion, and a stabilizing factor in sane progress. Its al'umni have been, in practically every community, the leaders in industry, in society, and in the professions. It has produced outstanding men both in Church and State. It is the dynamo from which has been generated the power that has, more than any other factor. determined our destiny. ill No institution can present a finer record of service. No insti- tution has grasped its opportunities with greater zeal. No institution is giving back to the commonwealth that established and is maintaining it, a richer return. No institution is fulfilling its destiny with a keener realization of its duty. QU If we may forecast the future in the light of the past, we may be permitted to prophesy even greater things for the University of our faith and loyalty. We look forward to the day when our beloved Alabama will be still more widely acclaimed for the service she has rendered and will continue to render in the high task to which her life is devoted.

Until it was opened, Alabamians had to go out of the state, to a W great distance, to secure such training as would fit them for executive posi- ' tions under the competitive conditions of today. TH The school has from the beginning met with the cordial support of the business leaders of the state, and has attracted large numbers of students. The graduates have gone into more than a dozen different branches of business. Happily, practically all of them have remained in Ala- bama. lll To lead in productive power, therefore, Alabama needs only the managerial. the directing. the risk-taking element. It must have men and women of enterprise, with the ability and the training to start, direct and carry on businesses of every kind. If these leaders of enterprise are to come from Alabama. our young people must have oppor- tunities for higher business training at home. The School of Commerce and Business Administration is furnishing these opportunities.
