The municipal university ideal was quite different from that of the denominational college. The citizens of Akron agreed to tax themselves so that they might be provided with a university that would offer a well- rounded course of studies. The University made good by offering such programs in engineering, home economics, and teacher training. However, Parke Kolbe, the University's President, soon ran into difficulty. Because the city was growing rapidly, it was forced to place the University's priority behind street paving, sewers, and many other of the city's basic needs. Adding to the problem was the incredible number of students seeking admission to the University.
