RAID H0555 IMA? :J MJ THE 4047528 or L' lx- l Akron University was founded in 1870 by the Univer- salist Church as a denominational college. The corner- stone Was laid by Horace Greeley and the ceremony was presided over by the Honorable john R. Buchtel, the primary' benefactor of Buchtel College. The main building on Akron's new campus was completed on july 4, 1871 and Buchtel College was dedi- cated on September 20, 1872. Two hundred and seven- teen students were enrolled during the school's first year and were taught by seven faculty members. All depart- ments, including the dorms, the library, and the chapel, were contained in the Main Building. The College required every candidate for admission to present a reliable certificate of good moral character. The rigid standards for admission coincided with john R. Q3 .J LONE STAR FRATERNITY HOUSE. gnrpnfo riANUAR Disaster struck the College on December 20, 1899, as fire leveled the main building of Buchtel Col- lege with an estimated loss of 5100.000 This event, along with the depression of 1893 brought the College to the brink of disaster. The proud citizens of Akron re- sponded to the colleges need. The response was great, but unfortu- nately operating funds were at a deficit which led Parke Kolbe and his associates to offer the school to the City of Akron.
