nib fl ' Hidden in his office behind the East stairs in Buchtel Hall lives U. S. Vance, University Editor, chief source of the University's pub- licity, godfather to the Tel-Buch and Buchtelite staffs, printer for the University, journalism in- structor, photographer and fisherman extra- ordinary. ' On the faculty roster he's Mr. U. S. Vance, to his friends he's Bus and to his students of the publications staffs fwhen he's not aroundj he's referred to as Pappy . F or a guy who would rather fish than do anything else in the World he does a lot of Work. With Eva , his clamour-girl multi- graph machine, he turns out almost all of the University's printing, While at Work turns up his radio volume until it makes more noise than the multigraph - then he's happy. Quietly and unobtrusively he watches over the Buchtelite in such a manner that the staff thinks that its work alone has brought it top- ranking national honors for the past four years. I-Ie teaches journalism in a college that hasn't a journalism department and has watched his students go out to take their places as Writers and Workers for some of Americas best metropolitan dailies. It is to Pappy , Mr. U. S. Vance, that we the l940 Tel-Buch staff dedicate this book. May the book be Worthy of such as he. M- . , ., . ..-as I
