TRIBUTES Dr. 0. E. Olin leaves the University this June, after more than fifty years of as¬ sociation with scholastic life. During the long period of his teaching. Dr. Olin has endeared himself to thousands of students and instructors. His fatherly in¬ terest, his scholarly devotion, his person¬ ality and patience have carved him a place among the pleasant memories of Old Buchtel. We cannot feel that “Daddy” Olin is departing. We believe that he leaves behind him an influence which will grow ever stronger through the passing years. The passing of Mrs. Elizabeth Thomp¬ son, Dean of Women and head of the History Department, is a great loss not only to the University, but also to the city, for her life was closely interwoven wit h the activities of both. Mrs. Thompson gave most freely of her mind and time toward the promotion of educational and civic enterprises, and through this, had endeared herself to in¬ numerable people. Her keen interest in people was one of her remarkable traits— one which made her a beloved confidant and advisor. The whole of Dean Thomp¬ son’s life and her passing can be expressed in these simple lines: “I have fought a good fight; I have finished the course; I have kept the faith.” Without a competent business man to manage its activities, any institution is in a sorry plight. At Akron University the responsibility for such matters falls upon Mr. C. R. Olin. For forty-three years Mr. Olin has been connected with the college—first as a student, then as a teacher and finally as Secretary. During these forty-three years Mr. Olin has earned the respect of the students and the very sincere regards of the faculty. The Tel-Buch takes this opportunity of expressing its admiration for his abil¬ ity, and the thanks of the student body for his administration. Page 9

MISS MABEL JANE ROGERS Upon returning to school last fall, the students of the University of Akron missed the familiar presence of Miss Mabel Jane Rogers, who died at Portland, Oregon, on July 5, 1930. Her ability as teacher, her interest in University affairs, and her strength and beauty of character had won her the respect and friendship of both students and faculty. While at the University, she served as faculty advisor for the Women’s League and as president of the Spanish Club. She was, in addition to her college work, at the time of her death, serving as president of the American Association of University Women and the local chapter of the Alumnae of the College for Women of Western Reserve University. Although Miss Rogers’ work here is done, in the hearts of all there is a reverent feeling of her continued presence. With her passing not only the University lost one of its most loyal supporters and enthusiastic teachers, but the city as a whole was deprived of a trusted teacher, councilor, and friend.
