THE MONITOR Ai. out the pll on as he Crled You ale flee' I wa fl e' I was so thankful that I lushed out and klssed the guald on hls left cheek and depalted lnto the xwlde uolld to tell the people that I was no Cflmlnal but Just an lnnocent fellow accused of a cllme vshlch someone else commltted R Lestel 40 MY FIRST DANCE ON 'IHE STATE On May first the danclng., class was t plesent a recltal The fatal ewenlng lollcd around at last The dax had been dreall and It was foggy and damp that nlght I splte of the fog a large clowd had assembled to see the show From tlme to tlme we would peek out through a small hole ln the curtam and look at the crowd Suddenly the slgnal fol qulet was glven the dancels t Mx place was COX910Cl wlth a 0V6l the edge Spllng and I dress On the The lgnal also meant f0l take thelr requlled posltlons on a small bench whlch was plnk scarf draped lh folds I was dressed to replesent wore a handsome long plnk bodlce of my dle s were tlny losebuds and I also wore one ln my hall The plogram was to open wlth the dance of the elves who were clothed ln llttle gleen sults They were supposed to dance befole me and latel I was to rlse gracefully and dance Wlth them Up and up rolled the blg curtaln and cn came the footllghts stallng and bllnklng up lnto my face llke thousands of llttle stals twlnkllng out of the dal kness I was not able to see any of the people ln the audlence whlch made It easler fOl me as I was tel llbly exclted and nervous Rlght avlav after the cultaln went up the muslc started and out on the stage came the llttle elves Thex had no more than stalted danclng when Oa oa came the welrd balk of the hound dog who apparently had Just enteled the door My' How that staltled the audlencc and the people on the stage' Suddenlv the hound bounded down the alsle and leaped on to the stage llght ln the mlddle of the hol rlfled elves The muslc came to an ablupt halt wlth a clash of chords Dovsn came the cultaln wlth a loud bang When that hap pened I Jumped up and bango' ovel nent my bench' The people ln the audlence loal ed some of them falrly shlleked The dance lnstructol sllghtly flusteled then came on to the stage and told us to get back ln our 16 places and the dance would go on as ewely one vlas qulet Aftel what seemed 1 long whlle the dog was coaxed off the stage the laughter stop ped and the elves and I lesunled our posltlons Up agaln went the cultaln and thls tlme no hOl1ld sound shatteled the stlllness of the spectatols and on went the dance as lf noth mg had happened Jeanette Jones '41 A SOUTHERN HOME The most beautlful home I have ever seen was a lovely old plantatlon ln Vlrglnla It was located about a mlle fl0m a small vll lage sltuated on a hlll overlooklng th1S small town To leach the plantatlon one must drlve though a wlde gate leadlng down a tree llned avenue Through the trees on one slde could be seen a beautlful lawn cut uenly Sur loundlng It was a neatly tllmmed hedge As vle dlowe along we passed a small hlll whlch gave us a beautlful vlew of our sul roundlngs North of us stood a majestlc mountaln of a purple hue It was deeply wooded and our vlew looked very lestful On the south was a beautlful lake surrounded by trees on clthel slde and cottages peeplng from thelr wooded sltuatlons On the east I could see the mall town Its church stood beneath a huge wlllow tlee lts plle llslng hlh and gleamlng IH the sunshlnc Westward I could sec the cottonnelds ln full bloom the WhltC loolnlng out greatly agalnst the dark back glound of the vegetatlon These VIQXVS made me long to llve ln thlg beautlful place The chauffeul stalted the car agaln and soon we alllved at the lovely old manslon The lllaln bulldlng was lnlmense and was sullounded by a huge vclanda whlch was con nected to a long and lambllng ell The house was whlte wlth gleen tllmmlngs and had the customaly plllars suppoltlng the porch Back of the house wele the slave quartels These showed much neglect and P001 u age Back agaln to the lawn to notlce fulnltule whlch we were told belonged to the CIVII lVal Ela Vle wele met at the dUOl bx a lovelv llttle old lady dlessed old fashloned A Southel gentleman stood by her slde dressed ln tl' same qualnt 3ttll0 They made a charm and lmpresslve couple They asked u se Q, . ik..- ..
