THE MOIN ITOR Hrgh School They planned to return rn one vear or less rf possrble June 8th arrrved and a large crowd had gathered to see them of Roland and Wal ter after krssrng therr wrves Ollve and Polly clrmbed mto the shrp wrth two assrst ants and slrd the door rnto place whrch auto matcrally started the ventrlatmg system Flash' Boom' The nrght was splrt by a trerrendous roar that shook the earth for mrles around The rocket shot down the track wrth terrrflc acceleratron and off mto the nrght on rts way to the moon Walter and Roland sat down rn therr thrck cushroned eats and prepared for the starrt The wrngs were spread and the shrp could be controlled lrke an arrplane Walter was at the controls When all was ready the hy drogen compressed rn tanks was exploded rn oxygcn and the occupants were suddenly forced back mto therr especrally constructed seats In fifteen mrnutes Roland who was watch mg the clock and dorng some flgurrng wrth a slrde rule sard Its trme to pull rn the wrngs we re out of the earths atmosphere and dont need them protruded any longer Now that they wcre out of the pull of gravrty the crew floated around over the shrp by merelv crvmg themsclves a lrttle push The Frrefly was now travelmg at full speed There was no arr resrstance and the drstance between the earth and the moon was fast berng decreased It was qurte a Job to get thrngs to eat because rf they were not careful, the food would float away from therr mouths and they would have to chase rt there berng no pull of gravrty One day after dorng some calculatrons rn hrs notebook Walter rnformed them A thrs rate we wrll have to begrn slowrng down for the moon rn a few days In order to slow down some large gyro wheels drrven by electrrc motors whrch e cerved therr power from large storage bat terres had to be started The wheels worked on the prrncrple of creatmg an opposrte mo tron to that of the shrp therefore slowrng lt or turnmg rt rn any drrectron The shrp could not be controlled llke an arrplane, be cxusc there was no arr to offer resrstancc to a rudder or arleron I have started the wheels sard Ralph Xlrrd the nrechrnrc and they work pcr tectly We are rlready losrng some speed plred James 'lweedre thc assrstant prlot who was at thc controls It wrll bc twelve hours before we shall be close enouvh to look for a landrng' pl rce, rdded Roland They were plannrng to land on the sldc of the moon that the people on the earth never see What do you thrrrk we shall frnd on thrs srdc of the nroon' asked Walter It wrll probably be about the same as thc other srde replred Roland It wont be long before we shall bc thcre anyway We had bctter start gcttrng out our nroon surts They werc cqurpped wrth surts to be worn on the nroon The atmosphere there rs thrn that rt would be rmpossrble to breath wrthout oxygen tanks and so they had surts ent day That looks lrke a good place to land sud Roland lct s head toward rt Phe Frrefly w rs now only travelrng, about seventy frve krlorrretcrs pcr hour whrch was a safe landrng speed rnd thc shrp w rs nc rr ly to the landrng place 'Ihe Frrefly landed very lrghtly on account of there berng lrttle pull of gravrty on the 'roon and the shrp werghed only one fifth as much as on the earth Thrs srde of the nroon seems to be much the same as the other sard James There rs no vegetatron and rt rs very cold Yes but here we are shouted Walter who wrll be the first to walk on the nroon' Lcts all go out together for a few mm utes and stretch our legs answered Roland They were much surprrsed when thev stepped srx meters each step whereas on earth they could step only one The ground looks as rf rt contarned rad rum sard Walter through the telephone on hrs moon surt If rt does contarn radrum thrs wrll be a valuable drscovery for there rs very lrttlc left on earth and there 1s a great denrand for rt rn modern scrences Lcts take some 23 V ,N , V . - , , ' Vi V 1 V V V .
