At 6 01 A M Danlel Cobb arrlved at the llghthouse He dlscovered that Captarn Wll hams was mrssrng and started a party searching for hrm Some trme later Captarn Wrlllams became consclous of sharp parns chasrng each other through hrs head He could not lmagrne where he was He ralsed hlmself to a srt trng posltlon and peered around ln the dark ness As hrs eyes became accustomed to the dark he became aware that he had been ly mg down on the floor of the gasolme store room As soon as he had gamed str ngth enough to strr around Danlel Cobb the as sxstant heard the commotron and began to rmestrgate He found the Captaln and took hrm up to hrs rooms and called a doctor The captarn was not serlously 1nJured although he dxd not know who had struck hrm down When Vtalton heard that the captarn had been found he became overwhelmed wrth fear and after several days whrch were filled w1th anxrety he went to the captarn and confessed He told hrm of hrs rnventron how he had wrshed to machrnery knowledge that the gruE old fellow would thrnk hlm foolrsh In the engrne room he had accrdentally shut off' the foghorn and alarmed the lrght house keeper who rmmedrately came down to rnvestrgate Frrghtened dreadrng the de tectlon he had struck the captarn wrth one of the heavy tools whrch he supposed had krlled hrm Then horrrfied he had hrdden hrm below rn the gasolrne storeroom He also admltted rntendrng to run away to the navy and leave word where to find the captalns body Tlhe captaln because of hrs lrkrng for the young fellow and conslderrng the fact that he had not been serlously rngured forgave ll1I11 for hrs hasty actron Octavra Gordon 34 get some rdeas for rt from the rn the llghthouse wlthout the of the captarn because he feared A TRIP TO THE MOON In 1958 Roland Pelletrer and Walter Bra deen had Just finlshed therr rocket shrp, The Frreily rn whrch they hoped to make a trrp to the moon They had been working on their shrp for five years and at last It was llllllt to therr satrsfactron The shrp looked llke a large clgar It was srxty meters long and twenty meters rn drameter at the longest part lln 1958 the Engllsh system of measurements whrch we now use had passed out of exrstence and ewerythrng was measured rn meters and k1lo meters instead of feet and mrles The out sxde of the shrp was constructed of a new metalhc compound made from alumrnum mckel Iron and several other elements Thrs metal had been tested and found to be able to stand the hrghest temperature of any known metal It was also very strong The fact that the metal would stand '1 hrgh tem perature was very rmportant because at the t6ll1flC rate of speed at which the shrp would be Iorced to travel thru the an most metals would burn before reachrng the earth bc used rn thrs atmosphere could be pro truded On top was a small door where the passengers or pllots entered the shrp The rnsrde was well lnsulated wrth asbestos that rt would be possrble to l1ve when the outsrde temperature was very hrgh In addntron to the sleeprng quarters whlch were on the sldes of the shrp there were three large rooms The forward room was the control and chart room the next the krtchen and dlnrng room and the aft was the machlnery Everythrng IH the cabrn had to be attached to the floor for as soon as the shrp was out of the pull of the earths grav rty exerythrng would lose werght and float about over the shrp Tlhe shrp was stocked with supplles enough to last two years I the control room was a powerful radro wrth whlch they hoped to send and recerve mes sages from the earth after they arrrved on the moon The shrp had a new ventrlatlng system that kept the a1r 1n condrtron to be breathed and at the rrght temperature The rocket shrp was placed facmg the east on a track a mrle long A terrrfic charge of hydrogen exploded rn oxygen would start the Frrefly on rts perrlous Journey The plans for the trrp were complete and Ralph start after Roland and James had graduated from Umty Roland and Walter vsnth two assrstants Ward and James Tweedre were t June 8 1958 Just twenty five years 22 .
