During their Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years, the Class of '88 won first place on their homecom- ing float. It was quite exciting to be victorious three years in a row. The Homecoming Dance and Prom were the most memorable dances to the Seniors. There were so many beautiful dresses. When they were measured for their caps and gowns, they couldn't believe it was actually happening. At the same time, they ordered their Senior Keys and announcements. They knew that the end of their High School days were near. Then finally, the last week of school was here. The Seniors were cramming in the last minute picture exchanging and giving each other name cards, and of course, we can't forget water fights. The Big Night'' is here!! Hugs, tears, recall- ing the memories — it's graduation. Jac- quelyn Bley sang The Way We Were as we all thought about our high school years. The Class of '88 is now part of Unity High School's History We will never forget UHS and our memories. 12 — SENIORS SPECIAL MEMORIES SCHOOL DAY MEMORIES As we reach out our hand The diploma we grasp While we think of the memories of the years in the past. Tears fill our eyes Because it's all gone We're starting a new life we have to move on. We hope friends will keep in touch as the years pass us by Although it hurts inside we try not to cry We think of kinderegarten and our very first day Now we've reached the end We are going away How do you say goodbye to friends who mean so much Will there be time to really keep in touch You'll always have the memories of your school years from day one Don't think of school as ending — Think of it as a new life that has begun. —Submitted by Kris Davidson seniors — 13 SENIOR Above: TRACK — (I to r) Colin Curry. SENIORS — 19 SENIOR TRIP May 6, 7, and 8, 1988!! Three days of fun-filled, excifing evenfs. A lot of memories were made that weekend for the Class of '88. The first day, Friday, the Seniors loaded everything on the bus and head- ed for Kansas City (top right). The bus driver was Jim Tallcott, he made the long bus ride ever interest- ing!! When they arrived, some headed straight for the pool (middle right). Mr. Bull tells Ty Hill to get plenty of pictures of the scenery (middle left). That night I he sponsors (Tom Bull, Mary Ann Peter, Ben Spohr, and Barb Selby) and the students went to Tiffany's Attic for a delicious supper and a play starring Tracy Gold, a TV star. Heather Cramm (bottom left) decides to relax and ride the merry-go-round. 20 — SENIORS After World's of Fun. they all went to a baseball game (top left). At the game, the Seniors were more entertained by some extremely happy fans than the game itself. Later, for supper, they went to Show Biz Pizza. Here, Brenda Hamilton, Ronna Duesterhaus, and Kimberly Kunz (top right) made friends with a member of the band. Marcy Rogers (upper middle) got to experience what it was like to be a professional race car driver. Brad Cameron and Joe Howell (lower middle) played a hot game of hockey before eating pizza. Everyone won a prize or two at Show Biz. On Sunday, their last day, the group went ice skating (bottom left). The Seniors found it a little easier to skate in a group (bottom right). The sponsors take a little break (lower right) and Mrs. Peter takes a little rest. The excitement is con- tagious. Both the audi- ence and actors are waiting in anticipation. The spotlight focuses the audience's attention on another world onstage. All auditions and tryouts are over. The directors, actors, and production crews have been select- ed. A year at Unity High School is much like a play where the parts are per- formed by the staff and the students. And, an im- portant ingredient, the setting is Unity. Theater people are a superstitious lot. They be- lieve it is bad luck to wish another performer luck before he or she goes on. Instead they tell each other to BREAK A LEG! CAN IMS PICTURE e? IK I THE ACTORS Do you want to act? There are many “hams'' in the classroom, and like the classroom, acting re- quires hard work. The ac- tor needs to spend hours learning lines, developing characterization, and then at rehearsal. The one in the spotlight is the one onstage, the one the audience sees. He or she represents not only himself but the playwrite. the director, and everyone else who works on the production. The actor is the one ele- ment that a play cannot do without. But the actor is the fin- ished product of a lot of other peoples' efforts. Not all of the jobs are on stage in front of the audi- ence. The lighting design- er, the property crew, the costume, make-up, and sound crews are impor- tant parts of a successful production. Just like actors create the overall mood of a play, students create the overall mood of Unity High School. L_ii______ TAKE W PtCTU$( The theatre exists above all, for the actor, and without him, it cannot exist at all. — Stanislavsky Page 52; Middle left — Ryan Koenig. Duane McMullen. Shedding light on the subject. THE DIRECTORS Each teacher is like the director of a play. The di- rector has to set the ground rules from the be- ginning and each has dif- ferent directing styles. Di- recting isn't easy and preparation is essential. The director has to be ex- cited by the play and plan ways to fire the imagination of the actors. His or her dedication and concentration should be contagious. The teacher needs to be positive and find ways to bring the enthusiasm out of the students and get them started on their way, Directors and teachers are trying to put their visions into reality. When you are the di- rector, you outline your goals for the play from the very beginning. To accomplish these goals, the director needs to be patient, fair, understand- ing, encouraging, and firm. Above all, the director must keep a sense of hu- mor. (top left) Paula Cory (far left) THE BLUES SISTERS? Ja- net Hendrickson, Barb Selby (left) Tina Kennedy IN THE SPOTLIGHT - 55 Everyone works together as part of the whole. TEAMWORK Teamwork is the activ- ity of a number of persons acting in close associ- ation as members of a unit. Each game, dance, or school activity puts Uni- ty's teams in the spotlight. Each of these activities demands the same kind of physical effort, con- centration and practice that any team sport does. Success comes when everyone does his or her job and is willing to share the spotlight. Teamwork is not being the ham and upstaging everyone else, but sharing the limelight and working together. IMPROVISATION Improvisation is spur of the moment acting with- out a script. The players make up their own dia- logue as they go. We improvise all the time in our own lives. Sometimes we do this easily and say exactly the right thing, while other times we are at a loss for words and hours later say Why didn't I say ...? A situation is given and actors play it spontane- ously with several differ- ent outcomes and each outcome is discussed. One thing to remember in improvisation is to listen actively to the other per- son and react appropri- ately. The Seniors made contributions to the team’s success with the un- derclassmen playing important backup roles. The team performed well despite a very hard and vigorous sea- son. askeWm The 1987-88 Junior Varsity girls season, which ended with a 3-16 record, fell far short of the team's goals. The team was plagued with a num- ber of injuries which hindered the team's perfor- mance as well as other major obstacles to over- come. The hardworking team also lacked exper- ienced players. The consisted entirely of Fresh- men and first year Sophomores. The girls learned the meaning of team play” since they were re- quired to work together to bring the team through some tough times. And thanks to Cindy Wietholder, the Assistant Editor, and all the Annual Staff members because all the hard work from everyone makes fhe yearbook successful. During my two years of being Editor, I have had a lot of fun and made some great memories. I hope every person that reads the 1988 Hi-Lites will find something interesting or informative or just plain enjoyable in it. I also hope that the pictures and words that we used to describe the people and events In the Spotlight at Unity will be a source of pleasant reminders of school year 1987-88 and help us remember each other as our futures take us in many directions. Good Luck to Cindy as Editor next year and Best of Luck to my classmates. Kimberly Kunz, Editor 128 — CLOSING
