While working at Unity, they were known for their organized work and office talents. They were looked up to with great respect. Leatrice L. Dedert worked for four principals and was book- keeper to six superintendents, for a total of 37 years of dedicated work. She retired in 1979. Dolores Buhre worked as a secretary at Unity. While here, she worked under seven principals. This adds up to a total of 25 years of faithful service. Both Leatrice and Dolores noted many changes in the school. The most significant being the consolidation in 1948 which increased the choices of curriculum and extra curricular activi- ties and in 1962, the new addition to the high school and the new elementary schools. 4 — DEDICATION Debbie Dedert Carolyn Flint Paula Jean Finlay Cary Donley Cynthia Ann rrese - Seott r ischer Kim Cettman Doug Duncan Tim Egan Don Hendrickson Robert Harms Joan Hamilton DRAWINGS BY JOHN MITTERMEYER 10 — SENIORS Kim Nelson Jay Rice SENIORS — 11 John Mittermeyer Randy Monroe Lisa Nutt Cheryl L. He arrived on August 8, 1980 to stay with Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Morley, Lori and Alan. He wanted to come to America for a “change” and something else to do. He saw many differences between U.S. schools and Dutch schools. Here the schedule is the same from day to day. But, in Holland, classes switch from day to day. Every Monday has the same classes, Tuesday has different classes, and so forth. Also sports are not associated with the school. They are clubs outside of school. He also noted, that teachers in the U.S. have more “power” over the students than in Holland. While at Unity, he was on the football team as kicker, and was named All Conference Kicker. He was on the Sadie Haw- kins court and was named king. When asked about future plans, he said he would like to attend a University in America if possible, after finishing high school in two years. One dream of his, would be to become a professional football or soccer player. Gosse left in August, 1981. While here he was liked by all. 1. Gosse around Unity. 2. The first day of school was a struggle for some to find the right classroom. Mr. Gene Moss and Mr. Edward Horack led the class as sponsors. Of- ficers were elected: Paula Finlay- President, Cindy Frese-Vice Presi- dent, Marcia Shupe- Secretary Treasurer, Joan Hamilton-Student Council Representative, Janet Loos- Reporter, and things began to go. The class built it’s first float “Mustangs Put the Hammer Down” for the Homecoming theme of folklore. Rain cancelled the parade, but the float was judged and receiv- ed first place. Cheryl Metzger and Jay Rice were elected to the Sadie Hawkins Dance Court. At the Christmas Dance, Cin- dy Frese and Tim Egan represented the class and at the Sweetheart Dance, Chris Shaffer and Mark were honored being named to the court. Class projects included a soup sup- per and Fun Night at the school. Ninety-two class members were brave to return as sophomores in the fall of 1978. Mr. Moss and Mr. Horack were right there behind them. Class officers were elected: Janet I.oos-President, Joan Hamilton-Vice President, Cheryl Metzger- Secretary, Gwen Starman- Treasurer, Lynne Trautvetter- Reporter, Marcia Shupe-Historian, and Paula Finlay-Student Council Representative. The Homecoming theme was commercials and the class con- structed a tank for its second place float entry — “Shoot ’Em Down”. Linda Foster and Rob Harms represented the sophomores at the Sadie Hawkins Dance, at the Christmas Dance, the sophomore members of the court were Carolyn Flint and Mike Wellman. Angie Bax- ter and Brad Warning were on the Sweetheart Dance Court. The highlight of the year was ordering and receiving class rings. Other activities were soup suppers and Fun Night. To begin their junior year, 92 classmates charged in full force in the fall of 1979. This was the year of bomb threats, a sit-down strike, the first of the dreaded “D.T.’s”, and more bomb threats. The class officers elected for the year were: Cheryl Metzger-President, Paula Finlay-Vice President, Gwen Starman-Secretary, Cathy Orr- Treasurer, Robin Wiese-Reporter, Pat- ti Starman-Student Council Represen- tative, and Lori Jenkins-Class Council Representative. Katri Palin joined the class as a foreign exchange student from Finland. The Homecoming theme was Nursery Rhymes. The Juniors cap- tured first place in the float competi- tion with “Ding Dong Bell — Pan- thers in the Well”. Angie Baxter, Lori Jenkins, and Janet Loos were the junior members of the Homecoming Court. Lisa Nutt and Kevin Schrader reigned as Queen and King of the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Katri Palin and Jim Porter were on the Christmas Dance Court and Lisa Nutt and Ron Hendrickson represented the class at the Spring Dance. The class raised money through magazine sales and a soup supper. The Juniors sponsored the prom, “Stairway to Heaven” on May 10. 1980 at the Quincy Holiday Inn. At long last, the senior year for the Class of ‘81 began in the fall of 1980 for 7 5 students. Gosse Vollema, a foreign exchange student from Holland, joined the class for their senior year. Mr. Moss returned as the class spon- sor joined by Mrs. Maxine King, for Mr. Horack had left Unity. The class officers were: Janet Loos-President, Lori Jenkins-Vice President, Marcia Shupe-Secretary, Gwen Starman- Treasurer, Shari Wilson-Historian, Joan Hamilton-Student Council Representative, Scott Fischer-Class Council Representative, and Jim Porter-Reporter. False fire alarms phased out bomb threats as the current “prank”. Homecoming saw a new tradition begin. The girls on the court were joined by boys and a King. Terry W'it- tler reigned as Unity’s first Homecom- ing King. At his side was Queen Joan Hamilton. Cindy Frese and Don Hen- drickson, Lisa Maas and Karl Ander- son, and Shari Wilson and Kevin Schrader were the senior attendants. The week was rainy and spirit night had to be cancelled, but the Seniors came through at the parade with the first place float. “Put the Cards Behind Bars” Jailhouse Rock was their price winning to the theme of Rock-n-Roll. Lori Jenkins and Gosse Vollema reigned as Queen and King of the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Chris Achilles and Steve Hadsell were the senior can- didates at the Christmas Dance. At the Spring Dance, Lisa Morley and Jim Porter were Queen and King. The class worked through the year with bake sales, soup suppers, candy bar sales, a Square Dance, and other activities to raise money. The Seniors were honored May 2, 1981, with “Time In A Bottle”, the Junior-Senior Prom held at the Quin- cy Motor Inn. Debbie Dedert and Kevin Schrader were crowned Queen and King. Lisa Nutt and Ron Hen- drickson, and Marcia Shupe and Mike Wellman were honored on the prom court. An awards assembly was held at the school on May 19 replacing the former Senior Awards Night. The seniors spent four days in Nashville, Tennessee for their long awaited senior trip. They toured the Country Music Hall of Fame, a recor- ding studio, spent an evening at the Grand Ole Opry and a day at Opryland. Baccalaurate was held May 27, 1981, and the final step was Com- mencement on May 19, 1981. After a 9-hour ride, they checked into the Drury Inn Motel and attended the Grand Ole Opry. The next morning they toured the Coun- try Music Hall of Fame and an RCA recording studio, and the homes of many famous country stars. The afternoon was spent shopping in the Hickory Hollow- Mall. The evening was then spent relaxing at poolside. Monday was spent at Opryland, U.S.A. Some went bowling in the even- ing while others relaxed. Tuesday was spent enjoy- ing the Country Music Wax Museum. At 10:00 a.m., the seniors boarded the charter coach for a long ride home. SENIORS — 21 The Final Reward Baccalaureate and Graduation took on new faces this year. For the second year, the graduates faced the audience. Adding to the new look of gradua- tion, the faculty, for the first time, lead the pro- cessional. Also the graduates were entitled to reserved seats for their parents and guests. Surely not one graduate will forget the moments between the “War March of The Priests’’ processional for Baccalaureate on May 27, and the “Proud Heritage” recessional for Graduation on the night of May 29, 1981. 4 5 1. In mid-August, the football gridironers began their drills and scrimmages that would last into November. With a new coach, a good senior squad, and a foreign exchange student from Holland, they formed a team. Through grueling 2 and 3 hour practices, they gained experience and expertise. The team traveled from Scotland County to Camp Point in search of a victory. The agony of defeat did not hamper their efforts for a win. Their efforts paid off as they stomped the In- dians of Meredosia at their last game. The thrill of victory was overwhelming as they won at a score of 36 to 0. 68 — SPORTS Edwin (81) gives it all he’s got while Chris Me. (71) and Kevin S. (72) rush to help him. 2 3 1. Each year annual staff must organize the yearbook to produce the finest book possible and stay within a budget. This involves coordinating people to get photo- graphs of the various groups and individuals that make up Unity. Then students must learn how to design a yearbook page and draw it so that it will resemble their design. Deadlines for pages must be met, ads sold; and decisions made that affect the total success of a well planned yearbook. 82 — ORGANIZATIONS EXECUTIVE STAFF: Sitting: S. Fee (Jr. Editor). Standing: G. MIDDLE SCHOOL — 105 Student Council The Middle School Student Council has sponsored many activities throughout the year. At the beginning of the year, the Middle School students sold candy as a money- making project. At Halloween, Christmas, and Easter the SC rented movies to show to the students. They had three skating parties and one sock-hop during the year, with all activities being a big success. They also sponsored a trip for all 7th and 8th graders to Nauvoo and Keokuk to see the Mormon Tourist Center and the Lock and Dam. At the end of the year everyone enjoyed participating in Student Council Week. Each year the Middle School Student Coun- cil gives the 8th grade class $50.00 to start their Freshman Class treasury the next year. The Middle School SC is spon- sored by Mrs. Rosemary Jenkins and Miss Martha Danglade who both work very hard to make the organization success- ful. 1.
