UNITY HI-LITES 1975-1976 U.H.S. ANNUAL STAFF SALUTES AMERICA S BICENTENNIAL DEDICA TION This book is dedicated in the memory of Mr. Wilford W.Nelson. He had been music supervisor for all grades of Community School District, Unit Number Four, for over twenty years. Mr. Nelson had a great interest in the theater and produced many musical plays at Unity High School. In the April 17, 1975, Mustang Round-up, Mr. Nelson wrote about his fight with cancer. In this open letter he strongly advised students, faculty, and his friends to stop smoking cigarettes. He stated smoking can't do you any good and maybe, just maybe, it won't hurt you either—but remember, baby, not every thing always happens to someone else! ! Although he is now deceased, memories of him will be with Unity and her students and facutly for quite some time. 2 biology TABLE OF CONTENTS LEADERS—7 SENIORS—19 ACTIVITIES—103 MIDDLE SCHOOL—118 m w ' • UNDERCLASSMEN—37 ORGANIZATIONS—55 SPORTS—81 1 AM THE NATION ... Chittenden. The name was changed to Mendon in 1839 as it was soon learned that a town of the name Fairfield already existed in Illinois. In 1867 Mendon was by special act of the legislature incorporated as a town, its boundaries embracing one square mile. The first frame public school building there is any record of in Mendon stood on the lot where the Town Hall now stands. Mendon Township High School was erected in 1918-1919. In 1948 the Com- munity Unit School District Number Four was organized. The three small high schools—Loraine, Lima, and Ursa—were disbanded and all the high school students attended Mendon High School, renamed UNITY. 5 THE FIRST 200 YEARS A knowledge of American history is an invitation to experience the ac- complishment, drama, tragedy and hope of an infant nation struggling to grow up. Sturdy, determined pioneers hacked away at the edges of a raw continent and, with blunders and achievements alike, modeled a country with a spirited nature and a united commitment to individual liberty for every one of its citizens. Americans, great and not so great, have given us a heritage to carry on and improve upon. Farmers and soldiers, industri- alists and merchants, dreamers and leaders, are all there in two centuries of progress. But the maturing isn't finished. You'll find the boundaries of growth as endless today as when our forefathers first envisioned them. You can seek out your own destiny with the wisdom and judgement which comes with re-creation of the past. Your knowledge, dreams and industry will carry on through many more centuries of living history. LEADERS SEATED: JULIANN ORR, GERALD CORNWELL, and NANCY LEWIS. STANDING: RALPH CORRIGAN, BILL KRETZER, DR. R. C. STEPHENS, and HAROLD SPRENGER. SCHOOL BOARD The Board of Education of Unit District Number Four is an elected group of individuals representing the public. They are charged with the responsibility of providing an educational program for all qualified students in the district. They appoint personnel, fix salaries, provide revenue and facilities. The board also sets policy and guidelines for the operation of the schools. The students and faculty of Unity High School thank the members of the Board of Education for their many hours of service to the district. 8 ADMINISTRATION RALPH PAYNE Superintendent HUGH SHRADER Assistant Principal DENNIS WRIGHT Principal Whoso neglects learning in his youth, loses the past and is dead for the future. Congratulations to these youngsters and hope they keep up the good work. A great Quote. I tell you this is a nation based on success. It is the only reason for a person to exist—to attempt to do his very best through hard work. There is no other path. You have to know all the things that have to be done if you are going to be a big time winner. Nothing of value can be achieved without desire, self-discipline, ambi- tion, dedication, a willingness to sacrifice and a willingness to accept authority.
