THE U.H.S. ANNUAL STAFF PRESENTS 1974-1975 UNITY HI-LITES UNITY HIGH SCHOOL MENDON, ILLINOIS DEDICATION The Yearbook Staff has co-dedicated this book to Coach Ron Davis and Harrison Underwood. Mr. Davis came to Unity in 1969 and during his six years he has taught Social Studies, Civics, World and American History. Since his arrival, he has been the head football coach and assistant track coach. Mr. Davis was also the co-sponsor for the Class of 75 for 5 years. His beliefs and ideas have affected many of the students and past graduates of Unity. His friendly attitude and optimistic outlook will always be remembered. The students of Unity High would like to say THANKS and wish him and his family the best of luck in the future. 2 DEDICATION In 1949 a young graduate out of Culver-Stockton tackled the position of teacher of physics and chemistry at Unity High School. Harrison Underwood came to Mendon where his career in teaching will end this year after 26 years of service. Mr. Underwood has made numerous contributions to this school and community which will long be remembered. He ini- tiated our current Adult Education program and formed the first science department at Unity. During his years of service he has sponsored the Camera Club and was given an award from the Music Department in 1961 for his contributions to that program. All of us have much respect for Mr. Underwood and we will miss his dry sense of humor and wit, but the students and fac- ulty wish him much happiness during his retirement. 3 NEW HORIZONS AT UNITY HIGH 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS UNDERCLASSMEN Page 29 SENIORS Page 9 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY Page 51 ORGANIZATIONS Page 61 SPORTS Page 91 5 ACTIVITIES Page 113 NEW HORIZONS, THOSE WERE THE DAYS M FRIEND usweo SCHOOL Live, each day to the fullest. Get the most from each hour, each day, and each age of your life. Then you can Zook forward with confidence, and back without regrets. Be yourself--but be your best self. Dare to be differ- ent and to follow your own star. And don't be afraid to be happy. Enjoy what it, beau- tiful. Love with all your heart and soul. Believe that those you love, love you. forget what you have done for your friend , and re- member what they have done for you. Disregard what the world owet you, and concentrate on what you owe the world. When you are faced with a decl ion, make that deci- sion as wisely as possible--then forget it. The mo- ment of absolute certainty never arrives. Above all, remember that God helps those that help themselves. Act as if everything depended upon you and pray as if everything depended upon God. 8 S. H. He is the fifth teacher because his I.Q. is approximately 5. Mr. Shrader (Hughie) has a unique grading system. If the student smiles at the right time, he gets an A. People with buck teeth are straight A students in his C.P. English classes. (C.P. stands for communication problems.) Like all teachers, however, Mr. Shrader does have problems (other than his students). His hobby is stealing typing paper from the Round-Up office. This mental disorder results from childhood problems. (He has had a lot of schooling) Aside from his difficulties, Mr. Shrader is very talented. When he and Mr. Wright have squirt-gun fights in the office, he usually wins. Congratulations to Hughie for getting what he truly deserves. STUDENT ACTION FOR EDUCATION 1st Row: P. Smith, P. Hampered by numerous injuries and playing without substitutes. the junior Mustangs managed a 4-4 season, despite only 13 squad members. The coura- geous defense sparkled in the finale as Carthage drove inside Unity's 20 yard line on five occasions but were unable to score. Unity enjoyed a 6-0 upset victory and earned a tie for record in West Central Conference standings. Steve Coulson set a new single game record with 18 tackles, as did Bruce Guthrie and Randy Gettman who combined for a record 80 yard T. D. pass Play. Mike Spohr tied the existing mark with four pass interceptions. One hundred percent winners were Coulson, Spohr, Dan Kretzer, Jon Hyer, Bill Graham, and Doug Greenwell. 94 Front Row: L. Carpenter, J. MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL This year's Middle School football team showed tremendous hustle and aggressiveness despite their lack of size. Their record of 1-4-1 does not express the talent demonstra- ted by this young ball club. Leading the defense was Bill Ancell with the most tackles for the year. Helping him from the line were Dan Kretzer and Bill Graham. Controlling the offense at quarterback was Ken Lubker with Mike Harris, Doug Foltz, and Tom Duncan in the backfield. Duncan lead all scorers in touchdowns and yards gained from the line of scrimmage. Discipline, and team work lead this year's J. V. squad to a 12-9 winning season, 4th place at the Catholic Boys Sophomore tournament, and a confer- ence co-championship with a 4-1 record. Six of the nine losses were by an average of 3 points. As a team, we outplayed our opponents in all areas according to the statistics. Individual statistic leaders were: Doug Her- ring-field goals, free throws, total points, and assists: Mike Spohr- free throws attempted; Charlie Terry- free throw percentage; and Jon Hyer- field goal percentage, and rebounds. If that is true, then this year's Freshmen squad will see a number of victories for their efforts in the future. The boys showed a lot of team spirit and aggressiveness in the games as well as at the practice sessions. The season was ended with a 4th place victory at the Central 8 team Freshmen Tourney. Receiving honors at the tournament was Doug Greenwell - all tourney team selection, top 15 scoring leader selection, and second in the top 15 rebounders selection; Perry Saffer and Mike Viehmeyer - both on the top 15 rebounders selection; and Ro Alaniz - top 10 assist leaders selection. Desire and motivation won many close ball games for the Unity team. An example would be the Quincy Comet game. The Mustangs defeated the Com- ets in a double overtime with a score of 53-50. The ability and hustle on the A team earned them a record of 11 wins a- gainst 3 loses; the B team earned six wins against two loses. Tim Finlay was chosen by the team as Most Valuable Player. The whole team deserves a pat on the back for a job well done. 100 Front Row: B. Goodson, R. Wittier, R. Haistings, Coach Walters, M. Orr, J. Stephens, J. Points, L. Carpenter. Standing: B. IT'S ALL IN A STATE OF MIND If you think you are beaten, you are If you think you dare not, you won't If you like to win, but don't think you can It's almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose, you're lost For out in the world you'll find Success begins with a fellow's will, It's all in a state of mind. Think big and your deeds will grow Think small and you'll fall behind Think that you can and you will, It's all in a state of mind. If you think you are out-classed, you are. You've got to think high to rise You've got to be sure of Yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger, or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins Is the fellow who thinks he can. For many a game is lost Ere even a play is run And many a coward fails Ere even his work is begun. 107 GIRLS SOFTBALL 1st Row Betsy Smith, Pam Hendrickson, Patti Smith, Brenda Seals, Debbie Mealiff, Linda Hilgenbrinck, Becky McClelland, 2nd Row Karen Anderson, Monica Gettman, Tami Baxter, Miss Luetke- meyer, Valerie Lubker, Beth Orr, Cheri Wittier, 3rd Row Anita Mealiff Mgr., Nancy Donley, LindaS. The usual starting line-up consisted of four freshmen, one sophomore, two juniors, and two seniors. At four games five fresh- men were in the starting line-up with the least amount of freshmen starting was three. The outlook for the 1976 season is a very good one. The club had eight freshmen and four sophomores participating and at least 5 were staring, so the future looks very bright for the U. H. S. girls. LETTER WINNERS J. Hyer, D. Mealiff, T. Gettman, T.
