Before the issuance of the first school newspaper in September-October 1948, a contest was held to select a name for the newly-consolidated high school. In the con- test, 80 high school students submitted possible school names in a sealed envelope. Shirley Hudson submitted the winning name and won the ten dollar cash prize. Thus, Unity High School, a new name for a new school was an- nounced on Friday, October 1, 1948, at a school assembly. Thirty-eight students graduated from Unity High School in the class of 1949. Like today, basketball and baseball were popular sports. The first football team as not started until the fall of 1949. The staff is small but represents all the grade levels at Unity. Students petition for the right of membership in their freshmen year and those selected serve during their four years in school. These students spend many hours after school in organizing material in order that the yearbook may be a true memory book for all the students. By serving for four years the senior members have an opportunity to learn the important details of yearbook organization. «2 Art On April 21, 1974, the Art Club is sponsoring an art show from 1-5 p. m. An important event of the first semester was the for- mation of a girls singing group who, after some delibera- tion, chose to be known as The Expressions. An assembly program was presented for the students and faculty just before the Christmas Holidays. In early April, a new-old musical play, Lady Audley's Secret was presented by Unity with Chorus members in all the leading roles. Our usual appearances at Baccalaureate and Com- mencement ended the year's activities. Student pianists: Rhonda Stephens and Debbie Emmert. This was the first year for the club to have an actual room to play in. Also Unity had its first triangular chess meet with C.B, and Payson participating. With a limited membership and amount of actual practice time, the team went full spirit against the opposition. We'll do it again next year with even more Mustang effort. We were under the direction of Mr. Warren, his first year at Unity. On November 15 and 16, the Drama Club presented The Diary of Anne Frank , based upon the book ANNE FRANK: DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL. Many drama students participated to help make the play a highly successful one. Several members went to Speech Contest on February 9. They were Angie Seliner, Bruce Bastert, Jill Arnold, and Chip Shriver. Chip went to the Sectional with his Special Occasions Speaking. Overall, the drama club increased its size and carried on a lot of hard work. Officers: B. Bastert, V. Pres.; B. Kropp, Sec.; T. Gettman, Treas.; J. Smith, Pres. ; P. In October the chapter entered a walking float in the homecoming parade along with a bake sale. We co-sponsored the Sadie Haw- kin s Dance with the FFA in which Gary Shupe and Sharon Dempsey were crowned king and queen. The annual Christmas Tea held December 4th, featured the girl's own crafts. A cracked glass candle and holder was presented to each mother and teacher present. Several night meetings were held, with a special meeting for our mothers. At this meeting, Leatrice Dedert showed slides of one of her many sight-seeing trips. Daddy Date Night was on February 5th, on the night of a basketball game. The fathers were served a supper in the Home Ec Room. The annual Parent and Daughter Banquet was held April 25 th, featuring a Chuck-Wagon Supper. Installa- tion of new officers was held in a candle light ceremony. The theme was The Barnyard and the senior girls gave a skit with Old MacDonald's Farm . The climax of the evening was the fashion show. The year's activities were concluded with the educational tour to the Blind and Deaf School in Jack- sonville, Illinois. 76 Row 1: B. Siebers, D. The Mustang Round-Up or school newspaper, began the 1973-1974 school year with numerous goals in sight. Debbie Emmert and Jane Smith were co-editors, serving as assistant editors during the 1972-1973 school year. The year began with a workshop led by the co-editors who were assist- ed by Mrs. Kunz and the two returning Round-Up sponsors, Mr. Gene Moss and Mr. Gene Wells. A portion of the art room was again designated as the Round-Up room. From September through December, monthly mimeographed issues of the Mustang Round-Up were prepared and distributed to the students. There were also two specials of this type during these months. Mustang Round- Up In January, the paper took on a new angle—printing. The Mention Dispatch allowed us to use their facilities for a nominal fee. Of course, advertising had to be acquired in order to pay for the pa- pers. For this purpose, Susan Conover was named to the position of Business Manager. Five monthly issues, beginning in January and ending in May, were produc- ed. A senior special was also done as a supplement of the May issue. In February, the Mendon Dispatch offered the Round- Up a free page in their weekly paper. The purpose of this page was to involve the community with the school. Articles concerning students, school activities, and functions of the school, were written by Round-Up members and placed on this page. These pages were concluded at the end of the school yar. In order to relax and enjoy all of these efforts, the Round-Up held a ban- quet on May 11, 1974. Thirty-one mem- bers and sponsors attended the dinner at the Plaza in Quincy. After the banquet the Round-Up peo- ple for the 1974-1975 school year were appointed. The Senior Editor will be Jill Arnold, her co-editor will be Jeanna Evans and their assistant editor will be Terri Gettman. Bev Kropp will serve as business manager. The co-editors would like to thank the Mendon Dispatch for all of their ef- forts concerning the Mustang Round-Up and also all of the advertisers that made it possible. The paper was a big job that required a lot of work and time on the part of die editors and business manager, but certainly most will agree, it was well worth the trouble. But team-wise, because of bad wea- ther, injuries to four starters, and perhaps the strongest schedule in the conference, the Mustangs suffered through a dismal season. But with these problems the team worked hard and never gave up on themselves. However in terms of individual performances the year turned out to be a very gratifying one, as several boys turned in outstanding years. Denny Nichols and Gary Shupe were both unanimous All-Conference selections. Denny, as an offensive and defensive halfback and Gary, as an offensive tackle and defensive guard. In addition, Bernie Wood- worth, Jim Duncan, and Denny Nic- hols between them established seven new school records. All three also received additional honors. As they were each selected by Coach and Athlete Magazine as All-American High School Football Players. In looking to the future, Unity can look forward to 1974 as being a good year for the football team. Next year the Mustangs will be led by tri-captains Dennis Voth, Steve Turner, and Dave Mealiff. These along with Mike Rabe, Jeff Nichols, Kevin Weiss, Rick Turner, Larry Woodworth, and Jim Duncan are ex- pected to form a solid nucleus for next year's team. Middle School Football This year, for the first time, 7th graders were included in the Middle School Football. Participation was sparse with only ten 8th graders and eleven 7th graders completing the season. Rory Alaniz and Doug Green- well were chosen captains for the 1973 season which ended with a 1-5 record and 1-1 in reserve games. The team, which was anchored by a line dominated by 7th graders, who con- stantly faced 8th graders, showed steady improvement. This was made evident early in the season with an 18-6 loss to Rushville and a heart breaking 26 -24 loss to the same unbeaten team in the season final. With all the experience the 7th grade team members received, there will be a good solid nucleus around which next years team can be built. If all return- ing wrestlers work hard in the off season, and come back with a good attitude, we should have a much im- proved season next year. Row 1: P. Smith, A. Seliner, D. Mealiff, G. Girls’ Track The Girl's Track Team has suc- cessfully concluded its second year of existance. The team participated in nine meets, the first being a tri- angular meet at Carthage on April 2. The girls did a fantastic job this season as their efforts were expressed when they took fourth place at both the Keokuk Relays and the Carthage Relays. This was quite a undertaking as there were eleven teams compet- fog. They were second place winners at the Carthage Triangular Meet, Quincy Relays (6 teams competing), Carthage (3 teams), and the District Meet at Carthage (14 teams). The triumphant victory came when the team won the first place trophy after defeating Brown County (6 teams) on their own track. The team pulled this same stunt twice again as they outran, out jumped, and out- threw three rivaling teams at the Central Invitational and beat Liberty in a duel. The final meet was the State Track Meet held at Charleston on May 17 and 18. Five girls, Peggy Evans, Susan Evans, Val Lubker, Debbie Mealiff, and Jerri Miller rep- resented the Unity Girls’ Track Team. Unity placed tenth in the State out 280 schools participating, with Jerri Miller winning State Championship in the discus throw, Susan Evans placing fourth in the 100 yd. dash, and Peggy Evans placing fifth in the 440 yd. dash. Miss Luethemeyer was guest speak- er for the Mendon Lions Club Meet- ing on May 27 which honored the Track Team. The coach, manager, statisti- cians, and fans were proud to share a part in the guiding, supporting, and recording of the team and its fine ac- complishments. May next years track team be as impressive. It is hoped that mother nature will be on their side and use the rain more spareingly. 105 Row 1: C. Rabe, Statistician; Mr. Warren, Asst. Track Coach; J. Varsity Track Lack of depth proved the worst handicap for the Mus- tang cindermen this spring as talented individual efforts went unnoticed in final team standings. Always out-num- bered but never out-manned, a hearty squad of eleven braved cold weather, rain-cancelled meets and injuries to transform what might have been a bleak season into one of future promise. Seniors Gary Shupe and Bemie Woodworth, both bat- tling inexperience, performed well. Gary continually earn- ed places in the field events and established a new school discus record with a 129'8 toss at Payson. Woodworth was equally valuable with a 5-11 leap. Both individuals gave the squad an air of maturity and dedicated hard work. Speaking of the future, Jeff Nichols and Dave Smith are sophomores of rare calibre. Jeff clocked a blistering 10.3 in the 100 this spring and seems destined to crack the 10.0 barrier before he graduates. He also swept the 100, 220, and long jump competition at the Fresh-Soph West Central Conference Meet, tying the existing 100 record. Dave is a brilliant distance prospect with a 4:58.3 mile to his credit. In Fresh-Soph WCC competition he easily won the mile and sped to a record of 10:55.2 in the 2-mile. Dave looms as the premier miler in the area for next year. Unity's steadiest performer was quartermiler Dennis Voth, who seldom lost a race. Combining strength with speed, he blazed a trail to the conference championship with a 55.1 effort. A junior, Dennis has great promise. Another point collector was Phil Heuser, alisa The Studebaker Flash. A distance specialist, Phil turned in the team's fastest 2 Mile of the season with a 10:50.2 fin- ish at the District Meet. He also took a second at the WCC Meet and will return next spring. Dave Mealiff characterized the hard-working jnuiors. His improvement could be noted each week. The utility man Dave ran the dashes, the half-mile and served on the 440 relay team. Hurdler Bryce Wollbrinck was impressive in early outings until an illnesss shortened his season. The smooth- striding junior appears to be a WCC frontrunner next year. Brad Baxter, Mark Frese, and Bo Deen rounded out the team with Carla Rabe and Mary Shupe serving as statisticians. Tom Duncan was the equipment man. 106 Row 1: Coach Keane, D. Wilson, B. Higginbotham, T. Bell, Dan Nichols, Capt.; B. Fanning, D. Kretzer, J. Duncan, M. Hilgenbrinck, D. Hilgenbrinck, Mgr. Row 2: G. The 1974 Unity Baseball team played 17 games dur- ing the season. With one Senior and three Juniors on the 16 man squad the team won 8 and lost 9. The starting line up consisted of one senior, three juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen. The outlook for the 1975 season is bright especially if die younger pitchers develope. Dean Herring and Doug Bryson assisted Pat Kean in his 15th consecutive year as Unity's Baesball Coach. Herr- ing and Bryson formly played at Unity in their high school days under Coach Keane.
