UNITY HI-LITES 1972-1973 Mustangs Unity High School Mendon, Illinois Dedication Mrs. Ethel Knodel, librarian at Unity High School, is retiring after 32 years as a teacher. She has been at Unity since 1959, first as both English teacher and librarian and later as a full-time librarian and sponsor of the annual. Mrs. Knodel attended McKendree College in Lebannon, Northwestern University in Evanston and the University of Chicago and received her B.S. and M. S. degrees from the University of Illinois in Urbana. She is a member of the Illinois Library Association, the School Librarians Association, the Illinois Education Association, the National Education Association, the American Association of Uni- versity Women, the Federated Business and Professional Womens Club, and is an active member of the Union United Methodist Church of Quincy. For her time and effort which she has unselfishly donated to the Annual, the Annual Staff would like to dedicate the 1973 Unity Hi-Lites to her. We wish to thank her for all her help throughout the years and we will never forget all the things she has taught us. THE STAFF Lois Gordley, Janet Mealiff Co-Editors 2 Unity Is . . . . . . With the help of Mr. Dean Woodruff and Mr. Stephen Schneider, the class sponsors, the class elected officers. Greg Campbell was selected as president, Rodney Shupe as vice president, Connie Niekamp, secretary-trea- surer , and Eddie Woodworth as the student council representative. The 1969 Homecoming theme was The Comical World of Car- toons. King Kong was the cho- sen title for the class of '73's first float attempt. Sixteen boys were on the Fresh. - Soph, football squad. The team held a 6-1 record, winning the Mid-West Conference and tieing for first in the West-Central Conference. The Freshmen Football team of twenty- three members held a 3 -4 record with Greg Campbell and Steve Tur- ner as team co -captains. Due to the large interest in a Freshman Basket- ball team, the twenty-two boys were split into two squads. Squad A ac- complished a 5-7 record. Greg Frazier held the highest average with 18 pts. per game, and 12 rebounds. Squad B 's record was 6-3. Junior Varsity Cheerleaders elected were Jo Ann Duppong, Jackie Hyer, and LuAnn Keith. To represent theClass of 73 at the Christmas Dance were Jackie Hyer and Roger Siegfried. The Basketball Sweetheart Dance held in February saw Jackie Hyer and Merle Kenady as the class candidates. Raymond Schaffer was the only freshman on the Wrestling Squad, while nine boys were on the track team. Of the twelve on the Cross Country Team, three were freshmen. Wayne Whipps is seen at his post as Statistician. Baseball is found on Page 114-115. At the end of our sports summary for the past four years, two people require special recognition. Ask any coach, and you'll hear Chuck Miller and Doug Seeber receiving praise-- when they aren't around. As Student Trainers they have worked hard to help with all the sports around Unity High. Sports wasn't all that happened in the 72-73 school team. The Drama- tic Club presented two plays. For Harvey in November, Steve Arns- man played a major roll. On April 13-13, Dave Hall and Steve Arnsman helped as main characters in the production of The Importance of Being Earnest. Many dances were held thru the year. At the Sadie Hawkins' Dance, Tom Foltz was crowned Little Ab- ner , followed in December by the Seniors' sponsored Christmas Ball. The staff is small but represents all the grade levels of Unity High School. Students petition for the right of membership in their freshmen year and those selected serve during their four years in school. These students spend many hours after school in organizing material on order that the yearbook may be a true memory book for all the students. By serving for four years the senior members have an opportunity to learn the important details of yearbook organization. R. Grimes, R. Leenerts, C. Orr. 66 ANNUAL STAFF Row 1: B. Putnam, D. A. members that this year would see Unity accepting fewer awards than usual due to the absence of their fearless leader--Mr. Evans. But through the endless efforts of various members and Mr. Smith, the Unity F.F. A. experienced a highly productive year. The judging teams faired well in every category including a Section 13 win in the livestock judg- ing contest at Macomb. Section honors were also taken in Public Speaking as members placed in both the Senior and Junior Divisions with Wayne Whipps winning the Extemp- oraneous portion of the contest. So all-in-all the F. The Unity Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America came into being as the group of girls traveled to the Farm Progress Show in Galesburg, Illinois, during the month of September. Daddy Date Nite was held in No- vember, before a football game. The chapter entered a float in the homecoming parade. Another major undertak- ing was to co-sponsor the Sadie Haw kin's Dance with the FFA boys. The Annual Christmas Tea, held December 7, featured Mrs. Gerald Murphy as the speaker. She spoke to the group attending on ceramics. On February 22, forty mothers and girls enjoyed an evening of fun as Mother's fun Nite took place. The year’s activities were climaxed with the annual parent and daughter banquet on April 5. The FHA spon- sored a style show following the banquet featuring Home Ec. girls. The theme for the banquet and style show was Once Upon A Time. The evening ended with the in- stallation of the 73-74 officers. The chapter was especially proud to have a Section Officer this year. The Unity Library Club is a mem- ber of the Illinois Student Librarians Association and the Mississippi Val- ley Student Librarians Association. This event proved successful and it is hoped to make it an annual affair. During the year the Student Council sponsored several assemblies. In the spring a student exchange program took place. Student Council members who desired could participate. Schools with whom exchanges were made were: Central, Hamilton, Liberty, Southeastern, and Warsaw. On April 10, 1973 elections were held for the 1974 officers of the Council. Student Council Week was held April 30 to May 4. For a period of years the Mus- tangs were the doormat of the con- ference; this is no longer the case. This past season saw Unity, for the second year in a row, finish second in the conference after losing the championship game to Carthage. This year's team, although lack- ing the natural ability of many of the teams on the schedule, was the most spirited and close knit at Unity. The spirit, closeness and emotion of these young men made this an enjoyable season. Individually, the Mustangs con- tinued to provide some of the finest football players in the conference. Rodney Shupe, while setting a school record, 102 tackles, is recognized as the finest linebacker. Rodney, along with his brother, Gary, were the only unanimous choices on the all-conference defensive team. Another senior, Dave Nichols, was also named to the all-conference defensive team. After playing half- back for three years, Dave moved to quarterback and, by the end of the season, was doing a great job. Another senior, Tom Woodworth, closed out his career as one of the finest centers. To carry on this fine tradition, Unity returns several fine Sophomores and Juniors, headed by Gary Shupe, Denny Nichols, and Bernie Wood- worth. Gary was an all-conference defensive guard. Denny, the leading scorer and rusher on the team, was an all-conference offensive halfback, and Bernie was the leading pass inter- ceptor on the team. Rain, wet grounds and cold weather hampered the efforts for practicing and playing. Two double- headers and four single games were cancelled. With only four lettermen back from the 1972 team and 13 first year players the team suffered from the lack of needed experience. The team had difficulty in executing the defensive plays with over 5 errors a game throughout the season. Offen- sively the Mustangs did a commend- able job swinging the bat, averaging 4 runs a game.
