Under the leadership of Mrs. Diana Simon and Mr. Earl Carpenter, we began to function as a class. We elected Keith Andrew, Pres.; Mike Hilgenbrinck, Vice Pres.; Brenda Nelson, Sec.; Cindy Nichols, Treas.; and Mike Dittmer, S. C. Rep. The Annual Staff hon- ored us with a get-acquainted dance. Kathy Hull, Pam Niekamp, and Monica Stock- hecke were elected Jr. Varsity cheerleaders. During the year in sports, we had 30 football players who were un- defeated, 13 basketball (9 of which played both Freshmen and J.V.); 7 wrestling; 6 varsity baseball, 3 cross country, and 9 track members (with Gary Evans as Outstanding Freshman on the track team). Student Unity High School's 1971-1972 Student Council was a very active one. The first Homecoming on the new football field was a big event with a full week of activi- ties. Added to the usual events was a sock-hop Tuesday night where Patti Knox was crowned as Homecoming Queen to reign the rest of the week. A pep rally was added Thursday night after the parade. The rally con- sisted of a powder-puff football game, class competition relays and a bonfire. The senior class came out on top by winning the spirit stick at the pep rally. The floats were great this year and centered around the theme Song Titles . President V. President Secretary Treasurer Historian Sponsor Council Our Council had student exchanges with Central, Carthage, Liberty and Warsaw. These proved beneficial to the students as the delegates gave reports in the special student council issue of the Mustang Round-Up. The is- sue informed the students of the observations made by our delegates. Also the issue helped the students become in- formed on the candidates for student council office. The Council had several special assemblies for the enjoyment and education of the students. OFFICERS Gary Evans Phil Smith Cindy Duncan Mike Hilgenbrinck Melody Merker Mr. Shrader Row 1: Mr. Moss, C. Success now and anticipated progress are the un- derlying impellents that characterize the production of the Unity Mustang Round-Up. Success we define as nine regular monthly productions and two timely specials dur- ing the 1971-1972 academic year. Two factors indicate anticipated progress. One is the involvement of a greater number of students partici - pating in the actual production process of the school paper. The second is the planned training in journalism for a number of students during the summer vacation period. Two of these students will attend a seminar in journalism at NIU, DeKalb the week of June 18-23. A larger group will participate in a school sponsored one- day seminar conducted by our own Business Department cooperating with the sponsors. We expect a bigger, better, more informative journalistic production for the 1972-1973 academic year. 68 Row 1: K. Starman, J. Dittmer, J. Mealiff, K. Weitnauer, J. Dempsey, L. Gordley, K. Students work as librarians during study periods and learn to check books in and out, shelve books, and help stu- dents find needed material. The librarians help process books for both the Unity High library and the Middle School library. They made Christmas book marks for the students. In cooperation with the Annual Staff they en- tered a car float in the Homecoming parade. A tea for the faculty and all librarians was held during National Library Week in April. The officers of the Unity Library club are: Pres. — Karen Weitnauer, Sec.-T re as.—Joan Dempsey, S. C. Rep. —Karen Ellerman. The Unity Club is a member of the Mississippi Valley Student Librarian's Association and the Illinois Student Librarians' Association. Bowling leagues were scheduled from October through January and the girls took care of the GAA coat check during the basketball season. Second semester activities included gymnastics, free-play, and badminton tournaments. The annual bunking party was held March 17, 1972 in the Gym. The 5-mile hike scheduled for April 29, 1972 was postponed to a later date because of the weather. Hikes were a problem during the spring as there were so many rainy days. The GAA hosted a Mother-Daughter playday Sat- urday, May 6, 1972. Refreshments were served and a awards passed out. Mothers and daughters bowled, played softball, and used the Gym Equipment. High School Chorus After a year of well-deserved rest, Unity’s Chorus presented the spectacular production of the musical Hello Dolly. The play was put on in the month of March with the help of the en- tire school, using the chorus as the cast and singers. Unity has once again shown that she has students with great acting ability. Other activities of the chorus were the annual Christmas Assembly with a lack of snow this year, a performance at the Pops Concert, and a final appearance at Commencement and Bacca- laureate. To end the year in fun, the Chorus along with the Band ventured on May 3 to War- saw High, proceeding to Keokuk in the after- noon. A banquet completed the year on May 16 at Angelo's in Quincy. so Row 1: D. Blickhan, D. McClelland, L. Cornwell, V. Lubker, C. Rabe, P. Schaffer, T. Carlson, P. Smith, C. Arnold. Row 2: D. Football The Unity Mustangs completed a successful foot- ball season with a second place tie in the West Central Conference while finishing with a 3-5-1 record. Twice the Mustangs were defeated in the last seconds of a game. In the Homecoming game Winchester scored in the last 15 seconds after a strong defensive game. In the Brown County game, which decided the Conference champion. Unity was again defeated in the last 18 sec- onds. The great play of the Unity defense was an out- standing feature of the season. Led by B. Schoch, E. Gronewold, B. Cornwell, R. Shupe, K. Egan, and M. Bryson, Unity held opponents to 13 points per game. Twice the defense held opponents to less than 100 yards. Hamilton was held to only 82 yds. while losing 12-6. Central was held to only 88 yds. while losing 25-0. Con- ference champion Brown County was held to minus 38 yds. in the third quarter. At Rushville, for eight consecu- tive plays Unity kept Rushville from scoring from inside our 10 yd. line. Tr-Captain E. Gronewold led Unity in tackles with 81 while being named to the A11-Conference team. As a linebacker, Junior R. Shupe finished second with 76 while setting a team record by making 18 tackles in 1 game. Offensively the Mustangs suffered through hot and cold spells. Against Warsaw, Unity exploded for 34 points with G. Evans scoring 3 touchdowns—one on an 80 yd. pass interception. Against Central, our finest game. Unity scored 25 points to defeat Central. Quarter- back M. Hilgenbrinck completed 2 touchdown passes to G. Evans and D. Nichols, who set a Conference rec- ord with an 83 yd. touchdown run. Against Carthage, Unity scored 23 points while being defeated. Junior D. Nichols raced for two scores and Fullback R. Shupe scored on a 36 yd. run. The offense outgained oppo- nents by 632 yds. but was unable to consistently cross the goal line. The 1971 season was the close of the high school careers of two of Unity's finest athletes, G. Evans and M. Hilgenbrinck. Gary and Mike were elected to the All-Conference teams of 1970 and 1971. They were two of the finest football players to ever play at Unity. In summary, Unity will lose a fine group of Seniors, but Juniors R. Shupe, D. Nichols, E. Hig- ginbotham, C. Winhold, and T. Woodworth form a fine nucleus to continue the improvement in the Unity football fortunes. 96 SCORES Seniors: B. Cornwell, F, Gronewold, B. Schoch, M. Hilgenbrinck, M. Bryson, G. Evans, B. Gooding, R. Rain, wet grounds, and cold weather severely hampered the entire baseball pro- gram. An unusual number of games and practices had to be cancelled. For the first time in several years, the athletes were permitted to participate in both track and baseball. Unfortunately., the conflicts far out-numbered the antici- pated benefits. Seniors Keith Andrew and Mike Hilgenbrinck were team captains and played some outstanding baseball during the season. Gary Evans, Brian Cornwell and Randy Hopson were the other Seniors in the starting lineup. Evans and Hil- genbrinck were also on the track team. Athletic Director Pat Keane completed his 13th year as head baseball coach at Unity. Earl Carpenter served again as Varsity statistician and official scorer. Doug Seeber and Steve Donley did a fine job as managers, ground keep- ers, and trainers. Ten Unity girls alternated as bat-girls and scoreboard workers. Marshall Woodworth kept our busses running and available throughout the season. We participated in the 6 team West Central Confer- ence and were host of the 4 team I.H.S.A. District baseball tournament on May 8-10. The squad selected Keith Andrew as Most Valuable Player for 1972. Coach Moore was the assistant and JV coach during 1972. Brian Cornwell was the most improved hitter. The Conference record was 5-5 with an overall of 7- 11. The Varsity averaged 3 runs, 4 hits, 4 errors. The oppo- nents averaged 6 runs, 6 hits, 2 errors. The Captain for 1973 is Dan Bastert. Part of these were called due to inclement weather and improper lighting. From eleven, the team comprised a 5-5 record with one tie. In forty-six innings, behind the pitching of Dave, Dan, and Denny Nichols, the opponents scored 37 runs while the Mustangs rallied 38. Steve Turner and Wayne Whipps produced .500 and .440 batting averages, respective- ly, to aid the JV’s efforts. Other team members included: Jim Duncan, Kurt Hilgenbrinck, Jerry O’Brien, Dave Klee- meyer, Lowell, Mardis, Bart Kelsall, Bruce Schaffer, Dave Parker, Steve Arnsman, Mike Price, and Jim Cantrell. The team was coached by Pat Keane and Bob Moore, and managed by Doug Seever and Steve Donley. 2 West Central Conference games were played with Central, Warsaw, Hamilton, Carthage and Brown County. Non-Conference games were scheduled with Quincy, Plymouth, Canton, Mo., Mexico, Mo., Quincy C.B. and Rush- ville. Row 1: M. Price, J. Cantrell, K. Hilgenbrinck, B. Schaffer. Row 2: D. Even though they were unable to repeat as West-Cen- tral Conference champions, they were able to beat every opponent at least . ..ce. They did well in the eight-team Ulini-Bluffs tournament placing third. Outstanding records vere turned in by Randy Wilcox, Dave Hall, Ray Schaffer, uid Tom Meyer. The majority of the team were underclass- nen and will be back next year. Track The 1972 Unity Track squad had some moments that were good and some that were bad. The bad moments con- sisted of overall team efforts that too often fell short, the team winning only one dual meet. The good moments con- sisted of team efforts that placed us fourth in the Confer- ence and a number of individual efforts that included some records. Senior Harry Jenkins was one of the most consistent performers, taking a number of firsts and placing in a num- ber of other meets. Junior Chuck Winhold was probably the most improved performer on the squad. We look for more from him in the future as well as from Junior Rodney Shupe. Leading the squad and turning in record performances was Senior Gary Evans. His :51.6—440 yd. dash and :23.2— 220 yds. dash were both school records and the 440 a Con- ference record. “White”, as this is being written, is prepar- ing for competition in the State finals, having taken 2nd in the district 440. Senior Mike Hilgenbrinck was a steady performer as a hurdler, and along with Steve Schoch, Dave Parker, Dave Nichols, Rod McKnight, and Gary Evans kept us in relay competition. Our distance runners, Tracy Clark, Dennis Voth and Gene Hendrickson placed in a number of meets and we ex- pect much from them during the 1973 season. Dennis and other freshmen Frank Stanfield, Bryce Wollbrink, and Brian Deen should give us some hope for 1973 F S competition. in Here And There Harry Jenkins Senior Study (?) Throughout the week the students participated in such things as a car bash, penny pitching and a junk auction. There was a slave auction and a junk auction. Students enjoyed physical fitness, tennis shoe derby, and carrot and celery days. The council members were hosts for students of other schools visiting Unity on student take-over and backwards day. For initiation the new student council officers were the personal slaves of the old officers for a day. An assembly for class competition in YO-YO competition was held. The assembly was followed by a softball game between the faculty and the Student Coun- cil members. The week was ended with a Student Council banquet at the Plaza. It was then that the new officers were installed. PRESIDENT NEW OFFICERS V. PRES. ROD SHUPE SEC. JANE SMITH TREAS. WAYNE WHIPPS HIST.
