The members of the Staff join as freshmen and serve during their four years in Unity High. Many hours are spent by the group to make the yearbook a true story of the year at Unity by por- traying all the functions, games, sports, classes, and other features of the year. Mike Dittmer Freshman Connie Blickhan Freshman Stan Schwartz Senior Beverly Dedert Senior The Staff sponsored a sock-hop at the beginning of the year. At this time the 1968 yearbooks were distributed and the incoming Freshmen were welcomed. The Staff entered a float in the Home- coming parade. Homecoming was very suc- cessful with the theme of Illinois Sesquicentennial. The parade was one of the biggest yet. The annual Homecoming dance was highlighted with the crowning of our Student Council Secretary Debbie Nichols, as 1968 Homecoming Queen. New permanent committees were formed this year for the betterment of UHS. Among these was the Handbook Revision Committee. This committee is designed to keep the Student Handbook up-to-date. Four faculty members and four S.C. members make up the committee. The Stu- dent Council cooperated with the administration in having a permanent flexible homeroom. Unity High takes much pride in the uniqueness and great success of this program. Our Council had student exchanges with Brown County, Central, Payson, and Carthage. These proved to be benefi- cial and encouraging to UHS. Three special assemblies were given for the enjoyment and education of the student body. On April 15, after a week of vigorous campaigning, the new student council officers were elected by the student body. Student Council Week consisted of a slave auction and slave day, dress-down and backwards day, a record auction and rummage sale, and student-teacher and dress-up day. The FTA sponsored a talent assembly during the busy week The annual Student Council Banquet was held at the con- clusion of the week, April 25, at the Flamingo. It was then that the new officers were installed. First Row: M. Frese, D. Cantrell, S. Rabe. B. Wright, J. Schoeh, Mrs. King, S. Smith, J. Strickler, G. Schroeder, J. Simmons, S. Tuter. Eighty-one girls and six mothers attended this all night affair in the Unity gym. On May 17 the G.A.A. held the mother-daughter play day. The bowling awards and participation awards were pre- sented and many mothers enjoyed volleyball, trampoline, and bowling. CHORUS The Unity Mixed Chorus activities this year included the Annual Chorus presentation for the faculty and students at the Christmas Assembly, at Baccalaureate, and at Com- mencement. Our greatest achievement was the two night run, in March, of CARNIVAL, a musical play. While the Chorus took most of the credit, it was truly an all-school effort. The great success of our production would not have been possible without the help of the Dramatic Club, The Art Department, The Home Economics Department, the Agriculture Department and all of the faculty members who gave much time and effort. The Sextet, known as the Eidelweiss, was a very active group. They made several public appearances. Among them were the following: Pops Concert at Unity, Easter Sunrise Service at the Retreat House. Liberty Lions Club. Bankers meeting at the Plaza. County PTA at Loraine, FTA Talent Assembly, and Youth Day at the Congregational Church. EIDELWEISS SEXTET B. Dedert S. Smith S.Jenkins B. Va Leu R. The Unity Club is a member of the Mississippi Valley Student Librarians Asso- ciation and the Illinois Student Librarian Association. The Unity Club was the hostess for the Annual meeting of the Miss. Valley Assn, which was held at Macomb so that the group might tour the new Instructional Materials Center of the Lab School. The Unity C lub had a car in the Homecoming parade, made bookmarks for other students at Christmas, and sponsored a tea for the faculty during National Library Week. The Science Club is in its fifth year at Unity High with nine members. Mr. Newton is the sponsor. During the bas- ketball season the members worked in the coat check to provide money for the treasury. On April 12, 1969, Sharon Smith, Rita Rhine and Diann Tallcott took their projects to the District Science Fair at Macomb. Rita and Sharon’s project was BIOCHEMISTRY. Diann s was MATHEMATICS. Rita and Sharon received a FIRST and this permits them to take it to the State Sci- ence Fair. Diann received a SECOND on hers. On April 19, 1969, Diann took her project to the Bowen-Augusta Sci- ence Fair. She received a FIRST rating and third place in her division. Front Row: J. Newell. D. Allen, S. Smith, M. Sill, D. ART CLUB The purpose of the Art Club is to encourage creative ex- pression among interested students and to serve the stu- dents and the school in creative ways. Projects are proposed by members and approved by the advisor and the majority of the members of the Club. With the money earned by members of the Club, the Art mem- bers take field trips to various Art Museums. The Art students furnished the scenery for CARNIVAL. A trip to St. Louis gave the members an opportunity to visit a large museum. Students gave an exhibit at the school to show the public what they have accomplished. The Industrial Arts Club is composed of interested Ju- niors and Seniors in the Industrial Arts program. This year the Club had two field trips. On the first trip, they visited Gardner-Denver at Quincy. On the second trip, they toured the Caterpillar plant at Peoria. The Industrial Arts Club also sponsored a dance “The Shop Hop” this year. Af- ter an opening 0-0 tie with a strong Rushville team, and a 19-0 win over Central, things went downhill for the Mustangs. After losing to Warsaw 12-6 and Hamilton 19-0, the Mustangs dropped lopsided scores to Beards- town, Winchester, Carthage, and Pitts- field. The Brown County loss was the only close contest during the last half of the season. Unity lost to the Hor- nets 27-13. Allyn Conover was named to the Midwest Conference All-Star Team as a Defensive and Offensive tackle. Allyn Conover won the Mustangs tackling trophy, and was elected as the Most Valuable Player. Players showing outstanding forti- tude and receiving much praise were O-back Mike Hilgenbrinck. halfback Chris Siegfried, linemen Steve Stulz and Marvin Rabe, halfback Owen Duppong, and end Greg Shupe.
