SHORTHAND 29 Class History 30 It could be told that the class of 1968 was an active bunch when all 87 of us bounded into good ole Unity High in August of 1964. To herd our roaring freshman class were Mr. Bishop and Mr. Brightwell as class sponsors. To help rule our active class, the following officers were elected: Pres. B. Sellers, V.-P. J. Daugherty, Sec. L. Schnelle, Treas. B. Bastert. Rep. Janet Tallcott. Serg. at Arms C. Miller, Stud. Coun. M. Brecht. To help cheer our brave freshman basketball players, we elected four robust cheerleaders. They were L. Schnelle, V. Egan, C. Klauser, and S. Smith. Nineteen freshmen boys participated in football, only 2 in baseball and 7 were on the track team. S. Smith repre- sented the freshman class at the Sweetheart Dance. The theme of our first homecoming was “Current Events of 1964.” Our float portrayed the Alaskan Earthquake. Our roller skating party was our only money making project for the year. R. Mealiff, Janet Tallcott, and P. Guthrie were selected to join the Annual Staff. J. Ennen and S. Smith were the only freshmen participating in plays during the year. Our class was becoming more and more active as the year passed on. Only 83 silly sophomores managed to come charging back to Unity in 1965. Our student leaders were: Pres. J. Daugherty, V.-P. R. Terry, Sec. J. Ennen, Treas. K. Crow, Rep. J. Rabe, Stud. Coun. R. Clair. Serg. at Arms G. Starman. The sponsors for our class were Mr. Brightwell and Mr. Roper. L. Schnelle, S. Smith, and R. Terry were elected Varsity cheerleaders. Our homecoming float “Halloween”, placed first in the competition. We sponsored the Basketball Sweetheart Dance and S. Smith represented us. She was also FFA Sweetheart. In sports, there were 13 sophomore boys in football, 6 played baseball, 6 participated in basketball, and five were on the track team. A. Schenkel won the Spanish Award. We ordered our class rings for the coming year. The sophomores were proud to be attending U.H.S. when the first Mississippi Valley Tournament was held. UNITY ZINKS HAMILTON Activity was simmering as the 85 jolly juniors roared through the doors of Unity High School to begin a year that was filled with action and excitement. To control their energy were spon- sors Mr. Brightwell and Mr. Hed- rick. For our officers we chose: Pres. B. Bastert, V.-P. D. Tucker, Sec. K. Terry. Treas. D. Schu- macher. Rep. S. Smith. Stud. C. Rep. P. Maynard, and Serg. At Arms R. VaLeu. To cheer our boys to victory, again we chose S. Smith, L. Schnelle. and R. Terry. Our Homecoming float “Yellow Sub- marine won first place follow- ing the theme of song titles. Our Junior Attendants in the home- coming court were L. Schnelle, R. Terry, and S. Smith. R. Terry represented our class at the Basketball Sweetheart Dance and was crowned queen. In the fall we received our class rings. We sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom, which was held at the Holiday Inn. The theme “South Pacific” was carried out with bright colors and ornate objects representing that area. The girls sextet from our class entertained us with some songs. The second Annual Mississippi Valley Tournament was held with Unity’s Cheerleaders winning the cheering trophy. In sports, there were nine boys in football, seven played baseball, six were in basketball and three on the track team. Phyllis Guthrie received the Typing I Award. Our money making project was the annual magazine drive. Our Class reached the highest goal yet, by any junior class. The high three salesmen were D. Schumacher, M. Brecht, and D. Neil, C. Klauser was FFA Sweetheart. Action was at its highest when 78 sophisticated seniors came back to U.H.S. realizing that they had only one year left of their good old high school days. Our sponsors this year were Mr. Crum and Mr. Newton. For our Senior offi- cers we chose: Pres. R. Clair. V.-P. J. Tallcott, Sec. J. Rabe, Treas. R. Hess, Rep. G. Shriver. and Stud. C. Rep. D. Schu- macher. In October our homecoming theme was “Broadway Hits”. As Seniors we chose “Carousel” and carried the theme out in many varied and bright colors. We received first place again setting a new record for three first places during our four years. L. Schnelle was crowned Homecom ing Queen and her senior attendants were J. Ennen, R. Ter- ry, and C. Klauser. Senior Pictures were taken October 19 and 20. We sponsored the Christmas dance. R. Clair and R. Valeu were crowned Queen and King. Janet Ennen was an attendant. This year M. Brecht was elected Student Council Presi- dent. The Mississippi Valley Tournament was a big success this year with Senior boys helping to win the champion- ship. D. Donley was named as one of the All Tourney Team. C. Klauser was named Queen of the Sweetheart dance with R. Hess crowned as King in the absence of R. VaLeu who was elected King. In FFA this year D. Orr and J. Dittmer both received the State Farmer Degree. Dewayne Orr also received the State Corn Yield Award. J. Dittmer was named the Outstanding Scholar. J. Priepot won the privilege of playing in the State FFA Band. J. Ennen was crowned FFA Sweetheart at the FFA Banquet in March. A. Adair was an attendant. The seniors were proud to be able to help with the first musical ever presented at our high school. “Brigadoon” was a big success. The Juniors entertained us with a beautiful Prom carrying out the theme “Gone With the Wind” with many fine de- corations. J. Ennen and R. VaLeu were crowned king and queen. As we look back on the four years spent at U.H.S. we realize how much we have learned from the ever-patient faculty. We sincerely thank each one of them for all they have done. Through all our lives we will always remember Unity and the cherished memories we have. 31 Where the ACTIO is . « . C.. The Student Council election for 1968-1969 was held in April. Student Council Week had student take-over day, slave day, a soc-hop during home- room, and a softball game. A talent assembly was sponsored by the FTA. Exchange students were here from Bowen, Central, and Payson. Special assemblies appealed to student interests- trampoline and music. A Student Council banquet was held May 3 at the Flamingo. Mrs. Deckard was the chaperone in the absence of Mr. Shrader. At this time the 1968-1969 elected officers were installed. 73 First row: B. Shirley Smith, Section 8 Recreation Leader, led group singing. On November 17, the Sadie Hawkins Dance was a roar- ing success. Prizes went to the best dressed girls-Shirley Smith and Rose Mary Terry. Prizes also went to the best dressed boys—Steve Poling and Brent Harnes. In recognition of the FHA mothers the Christmas Tea was held December 6. Instead of our annual style show, we made costumes for Brigadoon. Many, many new learning experiences were en- countered in this endeavor. The last thing of the year was Play School which was a lot of fun and a big success. 7a Our Homecoming entry. Chorus Activities of the Unity Mixed Chorus included the An- nual Chorus presentation for the faculty and students at the Christmas Assembly and participation in the Winter Concert in January, the Pops Concert in March, the Music Tour in April, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. Our greatest achievement was the two night run, in April, of our production of BRIGADOON, the musical play by Lerner and Loewe. While the Chorus took most of the cred- it, it was truly an all-school effort. The success we enjoyed would not have been possible without the help of the Dramatics Club, the Art, Home Economics, and Agriculture departments and all of the faculty members who gave much time and effort to the entire venture. The Senior girls sextet, Janet Ennen, Patty Maynard. Jill Rabe, Marcia Schafer, Lana Schnelle, and Rosemary Clair, who named themselves SUNDAY’S CHILDREN, sang for more than 25 meetings, civic organizations and other affairs in both Adams and Hancock counties. There were, however, some efforts expended by the club in one direc- tion or another. We cooperated with the Music Department in the production of BRIGADOON which was a highly, successful effort, from any point of view. Too, we put a committee to work at drawing up a Constitution for the purpose of making membership in the club a more meaning- ful experience as well as for the purpose of upgrading club productions. A good number of the membership enjoyed a pizza party during the year. The club was ably led in its efforts by the following offi- cers: Pres. D. Tucker, V.-Pres. M. Sill. Sec.-Treas. B. Par- rack. and S.C. Rep. J. Ennen. Co-sponsors of the club were Miss Judith Detrick and Mr. Eugene Moss. 85 B. Warning, V. Meyers, D. Donley, R. Hess, J. Schoch, M. Starman, C. Penn, D. Harness, N. Art Club The Art Club is a new organization in Unity. It is composed of those students who are taking Art. Further organization plans are being made for 1968-1969. Science Club The Science Club in its fourth year at Unity high with 20 members has been extremely active. During the basketball season the members worked in coat checks to provide money for the treasury. On April 14, 1968, Mark Sill took his project “ZOOLOGY, which included the circulatory system and dissection of the heart, to C ulver-Stockton College Science Fair. On April 20, 1968 Jim Littich and Mark Sill took their projects to the Ma- comb District Science Fair. Jim’s project was in “MATHEMATICS,” two ways of proving the Pythagorean Theorom. The librarians make bookmarks at Christmas and have a tea for the faculty during National Library Week. The club is a member of the Mississippi Valley Student Librarians Association and the Illinois Student Librarians Association. Janet Tallcott served as Vice-President of the Mississip- pi division this year. Camera Club The Camera Club of Unity High School serves many useful purposes. It supplies pictures for the Annual Staff and Student Council as well as providing pictures of students who wish to purchase them. The club also affords valuable experience for those students who are interested in the science of photography. First row: B. Irvin, R. Hess, J. Newell. Second row: M. Sill, D. Neil, M. Brecht, B.
