UNITY HI-LITES 1966-1967 [ . 1 L Vg Vi YT ( D £ 5 UNITY HIGH SCHOOL MENDON, ILLINOIS FOREWORD The organ is a unique instrument. Each pipe in it is different, yet when combined they produce a glorious effect. In the construction of an organ, all the parts are put together by master craftsmen who shape and test each section so that when the organ is installed it will deliver good service. In the same manner, a school is also unique. Every student contained in it is an individual, yet when united as a group, they posses great spirit and drive. In the process of education, each student is given knowledge from a person who is a master in his own field. By being exposed to many areas of knowledge, when the student is graduated and “installed” into society, he will deliver good service to his fellow men. This is the goal of education. I sincerely hope that I, in some small way, have contributed to your educational, moral and social de- velopment. You came as children and you leave as young adults. I wish for you good fortune and happi- ness. Four years have slipped away from our graduating se- niors and another year of school is history for those students returning next year. Needless to say, time is important to each of us. Therefore, in the short period of time each stu- dent is here at U.H.S., it is my desire that plus the knowledge gained in all academic courses, our students learn to appreciate honest work, and realize that for every privilege enjoyed these individuals must assume some responsibility. Upon the beach a bottle I did spy; I broke the seal, thus setting free— A wisp, a form, a heavenly date; We, amid the palms, could faintly hear The music floating sweetly on the air. Together we did dance, as in reply. Hardly touching the sands beneath. Nearly brushing the stars in the sky. On and on, till the mystic hour neared; A smile, a kiss, a caress for one endeared; And then—and then alone I stood. The seemingly empty bottle at my feet. Mary Peter, our Hawaiian Queen. G A A Activities enjoyed by GAA members this year included volleyball, bowling, tumbling, trampoline and softball. 69 girls were members of the organization this year of which 25 initiated the year. To raise funds we sponsored coat check at basketball games, sharing the profits with the camera and sci- ence clubs. On March 31, the GAA sponsored a student-faculty basketball game. At half-time members of the GAA entertained with a girls’ basketball game and new members cheered their favorite team. With the money earned from this project the organization would like to purchase tumbling equipment. April Fool’s day offered quite a remembrance for many of the members and their mothers. We held our first Mother-Daughter Play Day. Twenty-seven adults enjoyed playing volleyball, trampoline and bowling with the younger set. Mardell Spencer was a special guest and handed out all bowling awards won by the girls in lea- gue competition. Trophies were given to the two first place teams, emblems for second and third place teams, and special emblems for league high average. A special trophy was presented to Sherry Egan for her 222 game bowled the first night of league action. May 24th most members of GAA encountered a ten-mile initiation hike. Girls earning a specific number of points throughout the year were presented with awards on the hike. First Row: D. Shriver, Mr. Nelson. Second Row; Left to Right: L. Hawe, B. Grimes, D. Kerbrick, J. CHORUS Our Mixed Chorus at Unity was the parent organization for four smaller performing groups this past year-- The Concert Choir, die Madrigal Singers, Girl's Sextet and the Men's Quartet. These groups sang at various community affairs, concerts, contests, etc. throughout the school year. In November, four of our members were selected to participate in the All-District Festival at Western Uni- versity. In December, we presented an ambitious and unique Christmas program, with the help of members of the Instrumental Dep't., to our students at a special assembly. In February we presented our Winter Concert. March found us making the long journey to Nashville for state contest for solos and ensembles and preparing for our first (and completely successful) Pops Concert. In April our Music Department made two tours to surrounding high schools to present a musical program for their students. Our series of concerts was climaxed in May with die Unit 4 Music Festival. The Chorus, as usual, rounded out the year with appearances at both Baccalaureate and Commencement. 11115 year also proved to be the first time that one of our members has elected to major in vo- cal music in college. FT A The Unity Association of Future Teachers of America enjoyed a very hectic and yet rewarding school year. A carload of students and the advisor went to the Region 3 workshop in Pleasant Plains early in the year. At this meeting, many ideas were expressed on raising money and setting worthwhile goals for Future Teacher Clubs. The main money-making project for the club this year was the operating of the concession stand at the basketball tournament. Much experience was gained as well as money. During Student Council week the UAFTA sold carrots and celery and held the annual talent assembly for the students and faculty. The IAFTA State Convention was held at Peoria April 14-15 at Richwoods Community High School. Bill Wilcox, Mike Meyer, Janet Ennen, Gloria Shriver, and Mr. Underwood attended. The main goal of the President and the officers of the UAFTA was the establishment of a scholarship of $100.00 to a senior member of the FTA who plans to pursue a teaching career. This goal was achieved and we hope that it will continue to grow in importance with the years. 1966- 67 officers were: Pres. Mike Meyer, Vice-Pres. Roger Mealiff, Sec. Gloria Shriver, Treas, Dan Tucker, and SC Rep. Bill Wilcox. 1967- 68 officers are: Pres. Janet Ennen, Vice-Pres. Karen Terry, Sec. Rita Rhine, Treas. Michelle Star- men, SC Rep. Rose Mary Terry, and Rep. Patti Jost. Marrying Sam's work is done. Santa crowning the Queen. HERE AND THERE Anyone want a towel? Getting a fortune cookie. Bottom Row, Left to Right: D. Egan, G. LETTERMEN’S CLUB The Unity High School Lettermen's Club is one of the most difficult clubs to join. A boy must earna major letter in football, basketball, track, or baseball before he can be eligible to become a member. The 1966-67 Lettermen Club has a membership of 28 lettermen. Their first project was the annual Unity High sweatshirt sale in the fall of 1966. The sale was a great success with the student body buying Unity High School sweatshirts in a great variety of colors. In December the football, track, and baseball lettermen were initiated into the Club. The group of new girls at the basketball game was a humorous sight. During the winter months the Lettermen's Club was busy sponsoring the Reserved seats section at all home varsity basketball games. The spring of the year is banquet time. The Lettermen’s Club gave a banquet for their mothers at the Doo Drop Inn in Ursa. Special guests were the Varsity Cheerleaders and their sponsor, Mrs. Shrader. Donnie Egan, a Senior was presented a Maroon blazer at this banquet for his outstanding service to the athletic team over his four years as student manager. In May, the Quarterback Club gave a banquet at the Rainbow Inn with the Lettermen Club members and their fathers as special honored guests. The banquet was truly enjoyed and appreciated. As a special service this year the club sponsored a refreshment stand at the District Baseball Tournament which was held at Unity for the first time this year. First Row: D. Jackson, S. Burke, G. Dick Jack- son carried the ball more than any other Mustang and averaged 3.99 yards per carry. Grotte and Voth were second and third. Bryson caught 18 pass targets from Voth while Venvertloh caught 15. Bryson and Grotte led in number of tackles. First Row: Mr. Jones, Mr. Liccoci. D. Rossiter (Mgr.), K. Siegfried, T. Reardon, T. A schedule of seven games were played which included four Midwest Confer- ence games. (Central did not compete for the title since it was their first year for football.) The team finished with a 3-4 record and ended the season fourth in the conference. Philip Noel and Terry Jenkins were the leading ground gainers and scores for the Mustangs. Don Rossiter and Ken Cantrell assisted Coach Liccoci as managers. Only 13 Freshmen showed a desire to play football this year when the season opened. Three games were scheduled, but only two of them were played. These boys should give Unity High School a shot at the Midwest Conference Crown next year. The boys won 6, lost 10 and tied 1 and had a 4-6 Mid West Conference record in a season marred with rain and more rain. Alan Robertson was elected Captain and Larry Hoener, most valuable for 1967. Donnie Egan and Butch Rossiter were the student Managers. Mr. Don Liccocci was the team scorekeeper and statistician. Larry Hoener and Randy Stump made the Mid-West All Conference Baseball Squad. The Mustangs averaged 55.3 points per game which is a basic indication of .500 bas- ketball. The Mustangs failure to have die big point man was the biggest thing that kept them from a real successful season. Highlights of the season were die third place won over Central of Camp Point in the Second Annual Mississippi Valley Tourney, and the tie for third place in die tough Midwest Conference, where a 2 point loss cost the Mustangs second place in the conference. This was a fine accomplishment especially since no Mustang was selected for All Conference honors this year. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS D. Presser, K. Andrew, L. Schnelle, R. Terry, B. Voth, S. Smith. A. Brent Voth led the team in scoring while dividing Ills time between JV and Varsity play. John Brink carried the big lead in the rebounding department. The floor play of Randy Hess and die all round play of Allyn Conover and shooting of Ron VaLeu helped make this an enjoyable winter. The JV were handicapped in the fresh-soph conference games, having only two sophomores, which forced them to rely heavily on members of the freshmen squad who became an important part of die JV. The Var- sity squad competed in seven meets, taking first place in four meets, second place in two meets, and fourth place in the Mid-West Conference track meet. Outstanding performers on this year's squad included John Crouch, who was high point man with 66 3 4 points. John also set a new school record in the 120 yd. High Hurdles of 15.9 seconds. Stan Burke was second in scoring with 45 1 4 points. Stan placed 4th in the 100 yd. Dash during the District Track Meet in Macomb, with 45 schools competing. Another school record fell this season.
