UNITY HI-LITES 1965-1966 UNITY HIGH SCHOOL MENDON, ILLINOIS FOREWORD In this 1966 Unity Hi-Lites we have tried to make the theme of Hands show how the Hands of the students, faculty and all have made this year possible. Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts.” Hands perform many tasks and create many things. Through their cooperation our school is operated. The hands that type--that instruct-- the hands that guide and participate in our activities--have tried to pre- serve these memories. Thus, with the use of Hands we present this book of happenings--The 1966 Unity Hi-Lites. SENIORS HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1966 Ninety-two frightened freshmen entered the doors of Unity High School in August of 1962. With the help of Mr. Richard Isett and Mr. Donald Miller, we chose Dean Herring, President; Danny Mittelberg, Vice President; Janice McCune, Secretary; and Kassie Belden, Student Council Representative. Karen Dornink, Judy Gooding, Judy Lentz, and Judy Schafer were chosen to cheer our freshman team to victory. This team became champions at the Central Freshman Basketball Tournament at Camp Point. For the Homecoming float we chose Hawaiian Punch as our theme to coincide with the overall theme of TV com- mercials. Elected to the annual staff were Elaine Beverly, Mary Steiner, and Ted Sel- lers. At the annual staff dance Mike Crouch was king April fool, and he chose Judy Lentz as his April shower. The Dramatics Club play Off the Track included Phil Schmeideskamp in the cast. During this year the new addition to the schoolwas dedicated. In the fall of 1963, eighty-six silly sophomores came skipping into Unity for their second year of high school life. Under the leadership of Miss Phyllis Harris and Mr. Frank Hedrick, the following officers were elected: Mike Crouch, President; Gary Nie- kamp. Vice President; Glenna Starman, Secretary; Rodney Frazier, Treasurer; Mary Stockhecke, Reporter; and Kate Leeper, Student Council Representative. Dorothy Schafer represented our class as varsity cheerleader. Peter Pan , portrayed by Carl Koontz, was the choice for our Homecoming float which won a co-second place. King Twerp, Gary Niekamp, chose Kate Leeper as his queen for the annual staff dance. We were represented in two Dramatics Club plays that year. Meet Me at the Prom included Greg Parrack and Phil Schmiedeskamp; Seventeen is Terrific featured Glenna Starman, John Bastert, and Lucinda Wollbrink. Judy Barnett and Becky Hull won a first place trophy at the Science Fair while Lucinda Wollbrink and Sandra Daugherty earned a second place plaque. Mike Crouch received a third place award, while Ray Elston won a first place trophy at the District Science Fair and a third at the State Science Fair. Phyllis Detrick won the Spanish Award. The break-in of the school occurred during this year. In November of this year, two of our members, Karen Dornink and Debra Jost, were killed in an automobile accident. Freshman Champs Second Place Float: Peter Pan Seventy-six jolly juniors once again registered for their third year. Our Class of- ficers, under the leadership of Mr. Hedrick and a new member to our Unity faculty, Mr. George Harris, were Gary Niekamp, President; Dean Herring, Vice President; Janet Maynard, Secretary; Carl Koontz, Treasurer; Phyllis Detrick, Reporter; and Glenna Starman, Student Council Representative. Judy Lentz represented o«r class on the var- sity cheerleading squad. The Olympics , our Homecoming float, followed the theme of Current Affairs. Karen Kuhn, Janet Maynard, and Judy Lentz were the Junior attendants to the queen. Phil Schmeideskamp was also in the dramatics play, Danger, Love at Work. The prom, In the Misty Moonlight , was held at the Holiday Inn in honor of the seniors. Fifteen girls provided entertainment for our guests. Glenna Star- man won a 70-word typing award, with Sandra Daugherty and Lucinda Wollbrink winning the bookkeeping award. The typing I award went to Mary Stockhecke, and Rod Frazier won the athletic free throw award. Seventy-three seniors entered good old U. H. S. for their last year in the fall of 1965. Our elected officers were: President, Carl Koontz; Vice President, Glenna Star- man; Secretary, Mary Stockhecke; Treasurer, Kassie Belden; Student Council Repre- sentative, Lucinda Wollbrink; Reporter, Mike Crouch. Mr. Hedrick and Mr. Harris were with us again as our sponsors. Judy Lentz again represented our class as varsity cheerleader. Judy was also crowned Homecoming queen. In her court were Shirley Han- ley, Karen Kuhn, and Patty Viar. Our float, The 4th of July , under the theme of Holidays , won a co-second place. The seniors sponsored the second annual Christmas dance. Karen Kuhn and Dean Herring were crowned queen and king of the sophomore- sponsored Basketball Sweetheart dance. The juniors gave us a fabulous prom at the Holiday Inn, with Shirley Hanley and Rod Frazier being queen and king. As a final get- together, we went to Siloam Springs State Park for a picnic. A banquet at the Rainbow Inn and a dance at the school ended the day. As we look back on the four years spent at Unity High School, we realize how much we have learned from the ever-patient faculty. We sincerely thank each one of them for all they have done. A special thanks must go to our class sponsors, Mr. Harris and Mr. Hedrick, Mr. R. H. Underwood, our Counselor, and Mr. Ellis Simler, our Prin- cipal. Through all our lives we will always remember Unity and the cherished memories we have. Its members hope the UNITY HI-LITES features all your favorite affairs. The editor Mary Steiner was assisted by Mike Meyer. Elaine Beverly was our Business Manager and Chuck Groce our competent photographer. Our Sophomore staff members Phillis Guthrie and Janet Tallcott worked hard. FRESHMAN-SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL SCORES MIDWEST CONFERENCE TITLE The Unity High football squad of 1965-66 accomplished a feat no other grid squad at Unity has done--they won the first football trophy in the school's history of football com- petition. This trophy was given by the Mid-West Conference. Although Unity has played football since 1950, it joined the six-team Mid-West Con- ference just two years ago. The conference schools are Beardstown, Brown County, Cen- tral, Pittsfield, Rushville, and Unity (Central does not participate in football). Unity is the newest and smallest school in the conference. The four senior lettermen presented the Mid-West Conference trophy to Mr. Sim- ie r. Mr. Church also directed the students to the north wall of the gym where a huge painting of a Mustang was hanging. This painting was presented to the school by the Quarterback Club. BASKETBALL The Unity High Mustangs this year ended their season a game shy of the . 500 mark, which was a creditable effort considering their small physical size and the fact they were plagued by injuries to key personnel throughout the year. Statistically the Mustangs were led by Seniors Chuck Shupe 12. 6 avg. , Rodney Frazier 11.3 avg., Carl Koontz 11.2 avg., and Dean Herring a 10. 1 scoring average per game, Rodney Frazier 8. 3 average and Chuck Shupe 7 average rebounds per game, led the Mustangs in this department. The highlites of the cage season were the 4th place taken in the Holiday Tourney at Macomb, 111. , and the 2nd place finish in the first Mississippi Valley Invitational Tour- ney at Mendon, 111. The Mustangs were edged out 50-45 in a thriller for the champion- ship. t The climax of the season was the Mustangs last-second win over a strong Barry five in the Regional Tourneys opening game at Quincy, followed by a hustling, deter- mined effort in a losing cause to a fine Quincy Senior High team to close out the season. For next season the Mustangs will welcome back some fine Juniors and Sopho- mores, with a few outstanding Freshman. Five seniors lost by graduation this year are Chuck Shupe, Carl Koontz, Rodney Frazier, Dean Herring, and Mike Crouch. JR. VARSITY TEAM: Coach Church, B. Spohr, T. Nichols, D. Donley, J. Brink, D. The other members were juniors Alan Robertson, Larry Hoener, Randy Stump, Steve Siegfried, Kent Gronewold, and Greg Stout; also Sophomores Dennis Rabe, Bob Reckers, Danny Schumacher, Bob Bastert, Ray Peter, and Ben Spohr along with fresh- men Brent Gilliland, Bill Ertel, and Allyn Conover. They took first place honors in two, second place in two, fourth place in two meets and were fourth in the Quincy Relays out of twenty one schools in Unity's class. The crowning point of the season won the winning of the Payson Relays for second straight year. The young Mustangs had a fine season and were led in points scored by Junior sprinter Stanley Burke who won the varsity 100 yd. dash in every meet with exception of Quincy Relays. The mile relay team ended the season by breaking the Midwest Conference record and a school record with a time of 3:49. 7. This team was composed of Alan Robertson, Mike Crouch, Bill Irvin, and Stanley Burke. Another school record was established by Junior broad jumper Kent Myers with a jump of 20' 7 1 2 in the Midwest Conference Meet. Mike Crouch is the only Senior on the 1966 Track Squad so the Mustangs and Coach Arnold should look forward to a good track season next year. Broad jump record Mile Relay Team: A.
