Student Council exchange of school visitation was held with the neighboring schools of: Central, Hamilton, Warsaw, Carthage, and Payson. Several entertainment assemblies were enjoyed by the student body. These were concerned with music, a humorist, and a judo expert. The Council bought a volleyball traveling trophy. Each year, the winning home- room's name and number will be added to the trophy. Some ideas for next year's Council include a Student-of-the Month Program and sponsorship of the tournament being held here next January. Making BIG plans FHA MOTTO Toward new horizons FRONT ROW: L. Lead- ing 12 to 7 in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs had to give up the ball on a fourth down play with 2 minutes left in the game. Rushville scored with 14 seconds left in the game and won 13-12. Roger Brickman and Gary Niekamp each scored a touchdown. CARTHAGE--Unity lost the second ballgame of the year by a score of 26-18. The Mus- tangs' passing, which was brilliant in the first game, was held to only 43 yards. Darryl Voth, Gary Niekamp, and Steve Egan each scored one touchdown for the Mustangs. WARSAW--The Unity Mustangs came storming back, hungry for a victory in the third game of the season. They went all out to beat Warsaw High School 46 to 7. This was only the second time in the history of Unity that the Mustangs walloped the Wildcats on the gridiron. An added attraction was that this was the Homecoming game for Unity. Unity rolled up a total offense of 398 yards. Steve Egan connected with his favorite pass receivers, Darryl Voth, Mike Crouch, and Rodney Frazier, nine times for two touchdowns while scoring four touch- downs himself on quarterback sneaks. It was a great and glorious day for Egan and the entire football squad as well as the alumni. HAMILTON--Still rolling from last week's overwhelming victory, the Mustangs came back to clobber the Hamilton Cardinals 58-6. The Mustangs couldn't be stopped as they consistently scored touchdowns while giving only one to the Cardinals. Roger Brickman scored 3 T.D. 's, Gary Neikamp scored 2 T.D. 's, Darryl Voth scored 2 T.D. 's, and Rodney Frazier and Floyd Allen scored one T.D. each. The Mustangs rolled up a remarkable total offense of 448 yards, BEARDSTOWN--This game turned out to be the second heartbreaker of the season. Unity didn't get started until after the half when we were behind 20 to 0. In the second half, John Paul Grotte, Mike Crouch, and Rod Frazier each scored a touchdown. John Paul Grotte added one extra point. Meanwhile, the defense held the Beardstown Tigers scoreless the second half. But when the final gun went off. Unity was one point shy of beating the Tigers. It was a very warm, colorful afternoon. Again this game turned out to be an offen- sive battle, but this time it was the Mustangs who came out on top. Highlights of the game in- cluded 24 carries for 125 yards by fullback John Paul Grotte and an 85 yard kick-off return touchdown by Darryl Voth. Unity won 32-21. PITTSFIELD--This was one of the best defensive battles the Mustangs had put together all year. Richard Mealiff, Gerald Weitholder, and Roger Brickman were standouts on the de- fensive unit. The game was a 0-0 contest until the fourth quarter when Pittsfield managed to score a lone touchdown. This touchdown finally decided the contest as the game ended with Pittsfield 7 and Unity 0. WINCH ESTER--The Mustangs ran into a good hard-hitting group of boys during Winchest - er's homecoming game. An exciting first half left the score at 12-12. During the second half, the only touchdown scored was a punt return by a Winchester boy. Unity lost 19-12. Richard Mealiff, outstanding middle linebacker for the Mustangs, did a fine defensive job during the game. BROWN COUNTY--This game turned out to be an offensive battle. Both teams scored often but the Hornets scored the most. Rod Frazier hauled in three touchdown passes from Steve Egan. The Hornets still had momentum from last year's conference championship ball team. Brown County won 34-20. Basketball The Unity High Mustangs ended the 1964-1965 basketball season with a record of 14 wins and 10 losses. The Mustangs began the season with only two lettermen left from the 1963-1964 team who also compiled a record of 14 wins and 10 losses. The Crowning point of the season was the winning of the Wenois Conference Tournament held at Liberty, Illinois. The Mustangs defeated the Central High Panthers 68 to 65 to win the coveted trophy. Bernie Andrew, 6'l forward-center lead the Mustangs in both scoring and rebounding. Andrew had a total of 357 points for a 14.8 points per game average and a total of 210 re- bounds for an 8.7 rebounds per game average. Carl Koontz ended the season with a total of 265 points for an 11.0 average per game. Koontz was followed by Chuck Shupe with 235 points and Glen Beverly with 222 points. Glen Beverly was selected captain for the year. The Mustangs scored a total of 1582 points while giving their opponents 1577 points. This is the highest number of points that Coach Frank Long's team have scored and also the highest number of points ever given to the opponents. There were ten men who made up the varsity squad for the Mustangs; of these ten men, eight found themselves in starting roles at sometime during the season. The fact that eight of the ten boys were starters at various times during the season indicates the fine bench strength and hustling attitude of the Mustangs. The five Seniors who will be lost by graduation are: Bernie Andrew, Glen Beverly, Rog- er Brink, Roger Brickman, and Garth Baecker. Coach Long will have five juniors who will be back next year. They are: Carl Koontz, Chuck Shupe, Dean Herring, Rod Frazier, and Mike Crouch. The Sophomore squad, who played an eighteen game schedule, ended the season with a 10 won and 8 lost record. Sophomore squad members are: Floyd Allen, Allen Robertson, Dale Venvertloh, Larry Hoener, Randy Stump, Kent Myers, John Crouch, Terry Nichols, and Fred Zengel. Junior Varsity Team K. The Mid-West Conference plays a regular conference schedule in Varsity and Freshman-Sophomore football. Unity's squad consisted of 19 freshmen and 6 sophomores as most of the sophomores played varsity football. The Young Mus- tangs were unable to win a game but gained valuable experience throughout the seven game Freshman-Sophomore football schedule. With a predominately freshman squad the results of the season were not disheartening. . . Mr. Keane was the Freshman-Sophomore Coach. The lead- ing scorers were Bill McGee, Floyd Allen, Dale Venvertloh, and Charles Bryson. FIRST ROW: Coach Keane, R. Hess, D. Rabe, D. Tucker, D. Bryson. SECOND ROW: B. Spohr, R. Va- Leu, D. Neil, J. Tom Stockhecke, Sophomore and Da- vid Rabe, Freshman, were team managers. Mr. Don Licocci was the official scorekeeper for the Freshman team. The boys from Unit 4 were able to win 8 games during the '65 season. This was Unity's second full year in the Mid West Conference and Coach Keane s sixth season as baseball mentor.
