Mack Groce did an excel- lent job of supplying the staff with many important pictures. The Annual Staff sponsored the TWIRP dance in April. A cake drawing was held. Gary Niekamp and Kate Leeper were voted king and queen. They represented the Sophomore class. Jim Upchurch and Debbie Schwartz were the Senior representatives. The Juniors were Brad Knox and Linda Grimes, and the Freshmen were represented by Allen Robertson and Sue Takier. Hey, let’s dance. King TWIRP Gary Niekamp and his chosen Queen Kate Leeper. The Freshmen were admitted free. The “Dynamics”played. The Homecoming festivities, annually sponsored by the Council, highlight the fall activities of the school year. The theme for the two days’ activities was Walt Disney Creations.” A new project originated by the Student Council was the “no homework weekend”of each month, due to the efforts of the President. An all school Christmas Assembly was sponsored by the Student Council, with Mr. and Mrs. Jamas Davis presenting the program. Several other assemblies were given for the student body in various fields of entertainment, all of which were provided for by the Student Council. The Student Council elections were changed to include four Members-at-Large to serve on next year’s Council. The voting took place at polls set up in the cafeteria for the first time this year in- stead of being mandatory as in the past. The year was ended successfully with Student Council Week, with the highlight being student exchange.' Nine neighboring schools took part. Each day of the week had a special significance. Monday was student teaching day when the stu- dents assumed the roles of the various faculty members. Also it was dress-up day. Tuesday was the special assembly. Wednesday the out- standing talent of the school was recognized. Thursday was silly dress day--the Freshmen were babies, the Sophomores, clowns; the Jun- iors, Beatles; and the Seniors, Bums. An unforgettable physica! fitness assembly. Mr. and Mrs. J. Davis First row, from left to right: J. Robertson, B. Dedert, W. Rowbotham, C. Goehl, P, Korves, G. Beldon, J. Shupe, S. Evans, P. Activities for the year were bowling, which included two leagues, trampoline and tum- bling, and tennis during the spring. We also sponsored a coat-check during the basketball games and some after-game dances during the season. Awards are given to girls participating in activities according to a point system. The first-year award requires a total of 75 points; the second-year award, 150 points; the third-year award, 225 points; and the fourth-year award requires a total of 300 points. The Marching Mustangs began their season of programs with performances for home football games. A cha-cha dance step was the main attraction for the Homecoming game. In October, the band went to Culver Stockton’s Homecoming where they brought home the first place trophy for class A bands for the second consecutive year. YVestern Illinois University’s Homecoming provided a second large parade for the band. New uniforms and some new equipment made the Marching Mustangs appear even sharper than last year. Nearly ninety Unit students in maroon and white marched in this season’s programs. Bernie Andrew, a Junior, was drum major and Patti Tieken, another Junior, was drum majorette. Both of these students were large assets to the success of the Marching Mustangs. Officers of the band for 1963-64 were: President, Wendell Wray; Secretary, Lynn Shanks; Student Council Representative, Garth Baecker; Student Director, Jim Upchurch. In April the Music Boosters gave a ban- quet for the band members. All the Seniors who had been in band for all four years re- ceived a pin. At the left, Bernie Andrew, drum major of the Marching Mustangs, is shown as he presents the first place trophy for class A bands to Mack Groce, President of the Student Council. The band received the trophy at Culver Stockton College in Canton, Missouri for the second consecutive year. 68 The Marching Mustangs Halftime performance PEP BAND First Row: K. Leeper, K. Belden, C. Our own team as well as the visitor’s team seemed to have more “pep” when the Pep, Band played. Toward the end of the basketball season, the Brown County Pep Band and our Pep Band exchanged for visiting games. Stage Band The Stage Band, or Dance Band, provided music for school dances as well as several meetings of organizations within our immediate community as well as in sur- rounding area. This group always presents a well-organized program of music for people of all ages who enjoy various types of music. The Stage Band also accompan- ied the Concert Band and Mixed Chorus on their tour to Augusta on April 16. STAGE BAND First Row: L.Thomp- son, B. Andrew, K. Leeper, K. Belden. Second Row: R. The past year Mary Barnett was 2nd Vice-Presi- dent of the Mississippi Valley Association and Shirley Manlove was Publi- city Chairman. Unity was host tothe Mississippi Valley meeting March 21. There were panel discussions in the morning, a luncheon at noon, and a talk by Mr. David Leong, a visiting journalist from Malaysia. The Library Club officers are: Sandra Zengel, President; Cheryl Dedert, Secretary-Treasurer; Mary Barnett, Student Council Repre- sentative and Carol Miles, Reporter. This year Gary Frazier headed the group as President. Mike Agard acted as Vice President. Ross Peter was Sec- retary, Dick Ellerman was Treasurer, and Dennis Halsey represented the Lettermen on the Student Council. “Cheers for the team.” The student body is always ready and willing to yell for the Mustangs. ATHLETICS The athletes of Unity High School work hard to obtain their goal of winning a game and always display fine sportsmanship. CONFERENCES The Unity High Mustangs are currently in two athletic conferences. Unity is a member of the 6 team YVenois Conference including Central, Payson, Liberty, West Pike, Barry and Unity. The YVenois schools have an annual basketball schedule and a tournament, as well as fall baseball and spring track. None of the YVenois schools play football other than Unity, so it is not possible for Unity, to participate in fall baseball. There are also 6 member schools in the strong Mid-YVest Conference including Central, Beardstown, Rushville, Pittsfield, Brown County and Unity. The confer- ence has a full schedule in four sports with football, basketball, track and baseball. Central of Camp Point however, does not have football in its athletic program. The Mid-YVest Conference does not have a basketball tournament but they do have an annual ‘‘Conference track meet”as does the YVenois Conference. First row from left to right: D. Egan, Manager, G. This was the Homecoming game for Unity. Brown County had been scored upon once the entire season. Unity’s star halfback Mike Agard scored from 12 yards out. A total of 23 boys played a three game Freshmen schedule under Coach Pat Keane. The team’s leading scorers were: Floyd Allen, Charles Bryson, Jr. and Dale Venvertloh. It is likely that 1963 might well be the only year that Unity will have a Freshmen Foot- ball squad, as the MidWest Conference has adopted a Freshmen-Sophomore schedule for 1964. Unity plans to play a seven game Freshmen-Sophomore schedule in 1964 in place of a jun- ior Varsity Football schedule. 1963 FRESHMEN SCHEDULE ' Unity 6 Christian Bros 0 Unity 32 Quincy 6 Unity 7 Quincy 13 Junior Varsity Season The Unity High School Jr. Varsity Football team played a five game schedule winning 4 games and losing 1 game. Freshman Basketball The 1963-64 Freshman Basketball team started slowly but came along strong at the end of the season. Although their record was not too impressive, the calibre of play leaves hope for the future. The starting lineup was usually picked from a group of six boys, who were Dale Venvertloh, Larry Hoener, Floyd Allen, Kent Myers, Randy Stump and Alan Robertson. A total of 16 boys were on the team that played 14 “A” games and 5 “B” games. Dale Venvertloh was elected team captain and was also selected as most valuable by his teammates. Floyd Allen, Alan Robertson and Larry Hoener were the leading scorers along with Venvertloh. The managers were Gary Dedert and Tom Stockhecke. Mr. Keane was the coach for the fifth straight year.
