SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We were no different from preceding Freshmen when eighty-eight of us entered Unity High School on August 31, 1959. We expected to find high school very sophisticated and were somewhat dissappointed-- relieved however--when we found that everyone was just plain folks.’’ For our class officers we elected as President, Dick Spohr; Vice-President, Jerry Smith; Secre- FRESHMEN tary-Treasurer, Bob Stockhecke; and Reporter, Joyce Schulten. To learn just how the school was being run, Bonnie Schafer was elected to repre- sent us in the Student Council. Our sponsors were Mr. Carl Reuter and Mr. David Weisenborn. Our Freshmen cheerleaders were: Joyce Schulten, Sharon Ehmen, Kathleen Poling, and Bonnie Schafer. Eight of our boys were in football. We entered our float, “Sinking of the Titanic,” in the Homecoming Parade. Sixteen Freshman boys were in basketball. The team was undefeated on the home floor with a 7-0 record. Bonnie Schafer was our candidate at the Basketball Sweetheart Dance. Two of the Freshman boys participated in baseball and six in track. Donnie Caley and Sharom Ehmen represented our class at the “Top Gun” Dance sponsored by the Annual Staff. We had charge of the candy machines and also sponsored a skating party as money-making activities during the year. Returning the following August 29, 1960, eighty-one entered the doors of UHS no longer Green Freshmen but Silly Sophomores. As officers that year, weelected Kenny Niekamp, President; Jerry Smith, Vice-President; Joyce Schulten, Secretary-Treasurer; and Dick Spohr as our Student Council Representative. To keep law and order at our meetings, Jim Althoff, Dean Heitholt, Paul Rutledge, and Tom Sloniger were chosen as Sergeants- at-Arms. Our sponsor was Mr. Carl Reuter. Nine of our boys were in football. We entered our float, “Peter Pan,” in the Homecoming Parade. Four of our boys were in basketball. We sponsored the Basketball Sweetheart Dance and our candi- date was Ruth Carolan. Three Sophomore boys participated in baseball and three in track. At the FED- REB Dance in April, sponsored by the Annual Staff and the Camera Club, Jeanne Ertel represented the Sophomore class as “Miss Dixie” with Duane Neil as her escort. Bob Stockhecke won the Biology Award and Meredith Evans won the Free Throw Award. Seventy of us entered school the following August 28, 1961 proud to hear the name of Jolly Juniors. Our class officers were: President, Jim Althoff; Vice-President, Tim Wooldridge; Secretary, Diana Guthrie; Treasurer, Jeanine Schwartz; and Student Council Representative, Darrell Baker. The sponsors were Mr. Carl Reuter and Mrs. Zenith Wood. Kenny Niekamp was ----------------------------- Vice-President of Student Council and Ruth Carolan was Treasurer. We hit a high in our Junior Magazine Drive. Third high salesman was Dale Simon, second high salesman was Jeanne Ertel, and high salesman for the maga- zine drive was Meredith Evans. We received our class rings. Bonnie Schafer was the only Varsity Cheerleader from our class. Nine of our boys were in football. We tried our luck by entering our float, “Chattanooga Choo-Choo,” in the Homecoming Parade. The Junior attendants to the queen were: Ruth Carolan, Jeanne Ertel, and Bonnie Schafer. Three of our boys were in basketball. Bonnie Schafer was Basketball Sweetheart. One of our boys was in baseball and four in track. Jeanne Ertel was selected FFA Sweetheart. Jim Althoff was chosen as a candidate for Clem Kadiddlehopper for the Kadiddlehopper Hop and Joan Cramsey was his Daisy June. Diana Guthrie won the Typing I award and Esther Martin the Bookkeeping Award. Darrell Baker won the Industrial Arts Awardand Lyle Beeler, the Free Throw Award. Jeanine Schwartz won the Citizenship Award. Diana Guthrie was chosen representative for Girl’s State, with Esther Martin as alternate. John Underwood, Darrell Baker, and Bob Stockhecke were chosen representatives for Boy’s State with Meredith Evans, Dean Heitholt and Tim Wooldridge as alternates. Jeanine Schwartz and Velma Voorhis were chosen for Girls’ Conservation Camp with Bonnie Schafer and Janice Ellerbrock as alternates. John Underwood won the Journalism Award. Donna Cook received the Rural Electric Award with an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. We entertained the Seniors with a Prom “Moon Glow”, at the Sky-Lite Room in the Lincoln-Douglas Hotel in Quincy on May 4.
