SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We were no different from preceding Freshmen when eighty-eight of us entered Unity High School on August 31, 1959. We expected to find high school very sophisticated and were somewhat dissappointed-- relieved however--when we found that everyone was just plain folks.’’ For our class officers we elected as President, Dick Spohr; Vice-President, Jerry Smith; Secre- FRESHMEN tary-Treasurer, Bob Stockhecke; and Reporter, Joyce Schulten. To learn just how the school was being run, Bonnie Schafer was elected to repre- sent us in the Student Council. Our sponsors were Mr. Carl Reuter and Mr. David Weisenborn. Our Freshmen cheerleaders were: Joyce Schulten, Sharon Ehmen, Kathleen Poling, and Bonnie Schafer. Eight of our boys were in football. We entered our float, “Sinking of the Titanic,” in the Homecoming Parade. Sixteen Freshman boys were in basketball. The team was undefeated on the home floor with a 7-0 record. Bonnie Schafer was our candidate at the Basketball Sweetheart Dance. Two of the Freshman boys participated in baseball and six in track. Donnie Caley and Sharom Ehmen represented our class at the “Top Gun” Dance sponsored by the Annual Staff. We had charge of the candy machines and also sponsored a skating party as money-making activities during the year. Returning the following August 29, 1960, eighty-one entered the doors of UHS no longer Green Freshmen but Silly Sophomores. As officers that year, weelected Kenny Niekamp, President; Jerry Smith, Vice-President; Joyce Schulten, Secretary-Treasurer; and Dick Spohr as our Student Council Representative. To celebrate our success at Unity High School, we enjoyed a trip to St. Louis, May 19. Highlights of the trip were: We left Unity by chartered bus at 4 a.m., arriving in St. Louis at the Forum where we ate breakfast. Then we left the Forum for an hour and a half tour of Grant’s Farm. Following this we went to Lambert Field where we toured an airplane. Next we were taken to Forest Park and were free to tour the points of interest. We then were taken downtown to eat and shop. Most of us enjoyed shopping in the Famous-Barr Department store. At 6:30 p.m. we left from the Forum to go to the Ball Park and enjoyed a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds. The 1962-63 Student Council sponsored a variety of activities again this year, beginning the first week of school with a Get-Acquainted Dance.” The Unity Hi Notes played, and all Freshmen were admitted free. The biggest event of the year sponsored by the Student Council was the annual Home- coming. It was shortened into two days instead of three this year by having the parade in the early evening and the game that same night. The theme was “T. V. COMMERCIALS.” The Council provided a coke machine for the cafeteria and a juke box which was frequently used for sockhops. With the funds received the Council purchased a Polaroid Land Camera, and joined the Columbia Record Club to provide records for the stereo unit. Arrangements were made for two assemblies, one, a speaker, and the other, champion table tennis players. And, of course, the annual student Christmas party was held. Student Council Week ended the year with a different activity for every day. One of the highlights was the student exchange program with Warsaw, Hamilton, Liberty, and Central all taking part. The Marching Mustangs also marched at all the home football games and ended their 1963 marching season by playing in Quincy’s All American City Parade. The last half-time show was a cha-cha done under the direction of Mr. Robert Murphy, student teacher from Quincy College. With the arrival of winter, the band moved indoors to form the concert band. They presented their annual winter concert in January. In April the marching, concert, stage, and dance bands went on tour to four other schools, giving an hour program at each. They were well received and did much to obtain good will between Unity and the schools visited. Just before Christmas a stage band was formed for the Western Illinois Stage Band Contest. Soon after the contest new members were added to form one of the strongest musical groups in school. The Pep Band played for all home basketball games and pep assemblies. It was a big help in improving school spirit. The busiest group in school was the Dance Combo. They played for several dances at other schools and supplied dance music for school functions. DRAMATICS CLUB The 1962-63 school year was very rewarding to the Dramatics Club of Unity High School. The Dramatics Club tried something new this year. They went from the usual living room scene to a railroad station in their first play entitled, “Off the Track”, directed by Mr. Hugh Shrader. They followed up in the spring by presenting“Executives Strike” which was directed by Miss Phyliss Harris and written by Mr. Hugh Shrader. Both plays were a success and were graciously accepted by the audiences. The year ended by presenting pins and keys to members who had parts in the plays or gave assistance to the production of both plays. Unity started the season with a tie ball game. The Mustangs played an exciting game by holding the Rockets seven consecutive times within their own 10 yard line. Unity 21 - Carthage 21. The second game of the season again ended in a tie. Unity started off on the right foot by scoring a touchdown in the first two minutes of the game. The Mustangs were hampered by the loss of Gary Brickman who broke his arm during the game. Unity 21 - Warsaw 53. There was no stopping the Wildcats as they rolled over the Mustangs. Unity 7 - Hamilton 0. Perhaps this game was the best game of the year for the Mustangs. Not only because it was their first win of the season but also because it was Unity’s Homecoming. The boys were wild with excitement in the dressing room after the game. Unity 27 - Meredosia 6. On a rainy afternoon the Mustangs journeyed to Meredosia to ruin the Indians Homecoming. The Mustangs turned out to be good “Mudders” by scoring 4 touchdowns and 3 extra points during the rain. Unity 7 - Western 20. Again in the rain, the Mustangs battled to stop the mighty Cardinals. After a 6-0 score at the end of the first half, the Mustangs came back and scored 7 points in the 3rd quarter to go ahead. This seemed to put punch in the Cardinals who won the game and also the LaMoine Valley Con- ference. Unity 14 - Brown County 20. This game turned out to be a nip-and-tuck battle all the way to the final whistle. Unity 20 - LaHarpe 21. The final game of the season turned out to be a real heartbreaker for the Mustangs. The climax of the 62-63 season was 3 straight wins in the Central Freshman Tournament at Camp Point. Three Seniors, Meredith Evans, Ed Reckers and Lyle Beeler will be missed next season. Evans was the leading hitter on the team and elected team captain by the squad. Gary Brickman was elected as the Most Valuable Player on the ‘63 team. Coach Pat Keane’s Mustangs won 12 of 19 games with a squad of 19 players of which three were Seniors, eight were Juniors, five Sophomores and three Freshmen. Robin Ball and Ray Elston were student managers. The Mustangs will not be in the La Moine Valley Conference next year but will enter the young Mid West Conference. They will return to the Wenois Conference in basketball and track.
