August 31, I960 marked the twelfth year for Community Unit District No. 4. The personnel of the 7-member Board of Educa- tion has completely changed during the years, but school attorney William Dieterich of Quincy has been employed by the Unit during the entire thirteen years. Norman Arnold was employed as the new superintendent this year. Arthur Kuntz, who farms near Ursa, is an eight-year member of the Board and has been its president for the last five years. Maurice Conover, who is the Board's secretary, is serving his sixth year. Mr. Conover farms near Lima. Clarence Simon, farmer of Fowler, is a six-year member. Five-year members of the Board are Russell Shriver, -Ursa farmer, and James Up- church, Mendon, an electrician for Gardner-Denver. Carlton Myers who lives in Mendon and manages an Experimental Farm for Moorman's came to the Board of 1957-1958. Howard Hager- man, a member of the faculty of Quincy College, and Leslie Smith, a farmer who lives near Loraine, were elected in I960. They have met their challenge to chart the course of education within this district and helped educators in keeping to the course of providing a good educational system for Unit 4. The building program which has been undertaken this year, has been a particular challenge. 4 Success is what you make it, but is judged by many people other than yourself. One of the best criteria is that you be honest with yourself as well as others, as well as doing your very best for the particular day. Goodness lies within all of us; only by self expression whereby the more noble thoughts are exhibited can we reach that higher plane of endeavor. pyjdbuAoej. 5 LEATRICE DEDERT Secretary Office of the Superintendent DOLORES BUHRE Secretary Office of the Principal ZENITH WOOD B.S., University of Illinois, Mac- Murray College, Gregg College, Detroit City College, W.I.U., Quincy College, G.C.B.C. BAND The 1960-61 instrumental program was hi-lighted by a tour of the surrounding school units --Central High School, Bowen High School, Augusta High School, Nauvoo High School, Hamilton High School, and Warsaw High School. Each of these schools proved to be a challenge to the band. Once our buses arrived at the school, there was unloading and setting up, tuning, and playing to do, then load up and off to the next town. The trip provided lots of conversation the rest of the year. We were well received in all the schools and this added to the fun and excitement of the trip. The tour lasted two days--Thursday, April 20, and Friday, April 21. The Marching Band was at its best on Homecoming 1960. It had practiced after school as well as regular rehearsal time to prepare a half-time show that lasted 12 minutes. This group also marched in Western Illinois University's Homecoming parade at Macomb, and the Community Chest Parade in Quincy. Left to right, BACK ROW: D. Heitholt, B. Stockhecke, J. Underwood, J. This group, made up of five male instrumentalists, became quite familiar and popular in school and in the community. As always our Pep Band was on hand for home basketball games. We supported the team with our zesty music and provided a boost to the spirits of the student cheering section as well. Almost every assembly found us ready to participate and do our share of noise making. 1960-61 provided many fond memories for music students at Unity High. The con- duct of the band on tour proved they were students of exceptional character and fine ability. CHORUS The Unity High Mixed Chorus began to work last fall on music to be sung by a select combined chorus of all the high schools in the Mississippi Valley region for the annual meeting of that division of the IEA which was held in November of I960. Our next formal appearance would normally have been at the joint Christmas concert with the band. However, this year, it was decided to avoid the Christmas rush and delay our concert until January. The next singing date for the Chorus was a genuine professional appearance--we sang for the Adams County Teachers at their Institute Day in March. This was a professional date because we received pay for it. We finished the current school year with our annual appearances at both Baccalaureate and Com- mencement. 54 ACTIVITIES FLOATS HOMECOMING Queen Marilyn Herring Escorts Ray Muegge Mike Myers Pat Crouch, Arlyn Woorhis Carol Stockhecke, Derry Schne Beth Baecker, Hillery Parrack JUNIOR ATTENDANT9 Charlotte Wray, Bill Torbeck Sandra Frazier Denny Warning Donna Lanham, Dennis Cornwell Linda Steinmann, Patrick Stump Crown Bearers ATHLETICS The Unity High School Mustangs are in two (2) conferences--LaMoine Valley Conference and Wenois Conference.
