TRACK TEAM Brown, Muegge, Myers, Taylor, Goehl, Powell, Gooding, Meyers, Ellerman, Parrack, Sellars Mr. Stump, Agard, Morley, Frese, Beeler. Stockhecke, Stone. Baecker. Nineteen fifty marked the most successful season within recent years in track and field at Unity. The Mustang thinlyclads set and established several new records and brought about respectable recog- nition in both the Lamoine Valley and Wenois conferences. Of approximately twenty-five boys partici- pating at one time or another during the season, twelve won points in either individual events or the relays. The outstanding boys listed in the order of their total points for the season without relay scores are Fred Stockhecke, 34 1 2 points from shot, discus, broadjump and pole vault; John Frese, 31 points mile and 880; Larry Beeler, 21 1 2 points high jump and pole vault; Grant Baecker, 16 points high and low hurdles and broad jump; Fred Meyers, 13 1 2 points low hurdles and pole vault; Ray Morley, 8 points 880, 440 and mile; John Hendrickson, 7 points 100 and 220; Dick Agard 1 1 2 points high hurdles and 440. Stock- hecke, Frese, Baecker, Hendrickson, Morley and Meyers also picked up additional points in the relays. Also freshmen Mike Myers, Ray Muegge, Farrel Brown and Hillary Parrack garnered points in relays. The letter winners for the season were Stockhecke, Frese, Beeler, Baecker, Fred Meyers, Morley, and Hendrickson. The highlights of the season were Fred Stockhecke’s heave of the shot put in the quadrangular at Payson of 45 feet 6 1 2 inches which won first and established a new Unity record. John Frese, already the Wenois conference mile record holder from 1957 in the time of 4:56 ran a faster 4:54’.5 to break his own mark, set a new record and win the event again this year. Larry Beeler high jumped 5 ft. 8 in. in the tough Quincy Relays to take 4th place but in so doing tied the old Adams County record and Mendon and Unity record of Charles Starr set in 1929. Grant Baecker’s time of 18.9 will go down as an established record in the 120 yard high hurdles as no other records were available for this event. Fred Meyers’ time of 22.9 in the 180 yard low hurdles is established on the same principle. 26

BASKETBALL The Unity High basketball squad finished the season with 12 wins and 12 losses. Many people consider this a successful season on the basis that all but one of the basketball squad will be back next year. However, it is possible that the team was capable of doing just a lit- tle better than they did. Close scores indicate that there were some thrillers,” and fans are looking forward to the 1958-59 season. Scores were as follows: Those we won: Bardolph 67-64, West Pike 80-67, Western 67-62, Payson 49-47, Nauvoo 60-48, Bowen 65-55, West Pike 44-39, Plymouth 54-52, Central 83-76, Northwestern 67-65, Dallas City 97-49, LaHarpe 93-75. Those we lost--Barry 45-58, Colchester 51-55, Hamilton 54-55, Pittsfield 52-74, Payson 57-67, Warsaw 56-59, Barry 41-43, Liberty 71-75, Augusta 45-74, Brown County 55-71, Warsaw 75-82, Liberty 50-74. We placed second in the Wenois Tourney and third at Payson. The 1957-58 season was a banner one for the Junior Varsity Mustangs as they wound up the year with a seventeen won and six lost record. Among the wins were two particularly interesting games, one when Unity defeated St. Mary of Mt. Sterling in a return game after St. Mary had beaten them earlier in the year, the second when in the last game of the season an all sophomore team defeated a Notre Dame team who had a record of 18 and 3. Coach Stump was extremely happy over the results of the season which were as follows: The wins: West Pike 71-53, Colchester 67-56, Hamilton 63-53, Payson 88-39, Nauvoo 73-20, Warsaw 52-46, Bowen 58-44, Plymouth 57-53; Liberty 88-57, Northwestern 56-52, Liberty 76-49, St. Mary 49-38, Dallas City 73-41, Augusta 54-52, LaHarpe 79-71, Notre Dame 50-49. The losses: Bar- dolph 44-54, St. Mary 38-47, Western 62-64, Barry 47-56, Central 53-57, Brown County 66-68. Regardless of the season’s results of four wins and seven losses, the yearling Mustangs completed a year of valuable experience and one salted down with bad luck and heartbreak. Many of the games played could have easily gone the other way. The results were as follows: The wins: St. Mary 35-27, 53-52, Payson 61-43, Plymouth 59-44. The losses: Quincy 43-41 (overtime), Plymouth 47-55, Central 33-44, Liberty 28-38, Payson 30-34, Central 36-60, Notre Dame 42-45, Pittsfield 39-48.
