VARSITY KLUB Mr. Jones, Agard, Trautvetter, J. Neil, Mealiff, Baecker, Lowell McClelland, Mr. Stump. Priepot, Sellars, Terry, Houdyshell, Morley, Moore. J. Cramm. Harness, Powell, Porter, White, Thompson, Beverly, Cornwell Homan, K. Koontz, Cogburn, R. Bradbury, M. Koontz, Conover, Hendrickson. The V-K Klub was composed of approximately thirty-five boys this year under the sponsorship of Mr. Jones and Mr. Stump. The members are major letter winners and minor letter winners in football, bas- ketball, baseball and track. The prime purpose of the organization is to promote interest, to improve sportsmanship and to create the enthusiastic team spirit which is the life- blood of athletics. The president of VK this year was Raymond Morley, vice-president, Donald Cogburn; and secretary-treasurer Bill Moore. The boys were well represented in the Homecoming this year with a very, very old and dilapidated motor car which all but stole the show in the parade. The annual dance was an affair not to be forgotten and sales of soda pop and candy enabled the boys to purchase new striped track shirts and sweat suits, and equipment which was sorely needed. 23

BASKETBALL The Unity High basketball squad finished the season with 12 wins and 12 losses. Many people consider this a successful season on the basis that all but one of the basketball squad will be back next year. However, it is possible that the team was capable of doing just a lit- tle better than they did. Close scores indicate that there were some thrillers,” and fans are looking forward to the 1958-59 season. Scores were as follows: Those we won: Bardolph 67-64, West Pike 80-67, Western 67-62, Payson 49-47, Nauvoo 60-48, Bowen 65-55, West Pike 44-39, Plymouth 54-52, Central 83-76, Northwestern 67-65, Dallas City 97-49, LaHarpe 93-75. Those we lost--Barry 45-58, Colchester 51-55, Hamilton 54-55, Pittsfield 52-74, Payson 57-67, Warsaw 56-59, Barry 41-43, Liberty 71-75, Augusta 45-74, Brown County 55-71, Warsaw 75-82, Liberty 50-74. We placed second in the Wenois Tourney and third at Payson. The 1957-58 season was a banner one for the Junior Varsity Mustangs as they wound up the year with a seventeen won and six lost record. Among the wins were two particularly interesting games, one when Unity defeated St. Mary of Mt. Sterling in a return game after St. Mary had beaten them earlier in the year, the second when in the last game of the season an all sophomore team defeated a Notre Dame team who had a record of 18 and 3. Coach Stump was extremely happy over the results of the season which were as follows: The wins: West Pike 71-53, Colchester 67-56, Hamilton 63-53, Payson 88-39, Nauvoo 73-20, Warsaw 52-46, Bowen 58-44, Plymouth 57-53; Liberty 88-57, Northwestern 56-52, Liberty 76-49, St. Mary 49-38, Dallas City 73-41, Augusta 54-52, LaHarpe 79-71, Notre Dame 50-49. The losses: Bar- dolph 44-54, St. Mary 38-47, Western 62-64, Barry 47-56, Central 53-57, Brown County 66-68. Regardless of the season’s results of four wins and seven losses, the yearling Mustangs completed a year of valuable experience and one salted down with bad luck and heartbreak. Many of the games played could have easily gone the other way. The results were as follows: The wins: St. Mary 35-27, 53-52, Payson 61-43, Plymouth 59-44. The losses: Quincy 43-41 (overtime), Plymouth 47-55, Central 33-44, Liberty 28-38, Payson 30-34, Central 36-60, Notre Dame 42-45, Pittsfield 39-48.
