A. A. The Girls' Athletic Association or the Unity Unicorns, numbered seventy-eight this year. Of this group, twenty- seven were new members who were initiated on October 21. On this day they were required to wear their clothes backwards or in some unorthodox manner. After school, the group enjoyed a wiener roast at the end of a three-mile hike. The officers of the club were: President, Judy Peter; Vice-President, Lois Steiner; Secretary, Judith Evans; Treas- urer, Nancy Dedert; SS Representative, Sandra Schafer. In the fall, twenty-five girls went to the Y.M.C.A. in CXiincy for ten swimming lessons. The advanced group included: Linda Beeler, ’Barbara Bradbury, ’’Maureen Caley, ’’Patty Crouch, ’’Clara Corrigan, Judy Detrick, ’’Carolyn Hamilton, Sharon Harms, ’Sharon Wood- worth, ’’Nancy Tieken, ’’Carol Tribbett. The beginners were: Beth Baecker, Charlotte Bruen- ger, Connie Campbell, Barbara Crabtree, Gloria Frazier, Lucille Gooding, Mary Ann Inman, Suzanne Knox, Mary Ann Mealiff, Sharon Myers, Karen Muegge, Beulah Sill, Sylvia Turner, Marie Wessinger, Sharon Woodruff, Dianne Venvertloh. ( indicates those who accomplished the 20-yard swim and ” indicates those who learned to dive from the diving board). At the last lesson each girl invited a boy guest. After swimming, seventy girls bowled at the Casino lanes in Quincy a total of twelve times, the last two being “guest nights” for boys. These two nights were “free” and given to the girls by the manager complimenting them for excellent sportsmanship. Sixteen teams bowled and awards were given to the five top teams pictured on page 13. Six teams played a Round Robin basketball tournament after school hours. First place was won by the freshmen team No. 6 pictured on Page 11. The seniors and juniors each entered one team and two teams were entered by both the sophomores and freshmen. Hamilton High School held a Play Day which was very much enjoyed by twelve of the Unity Unicorns. The girls sponsored both badminton and volleyball during the noon hours. Two outstanding events presented by the girls for the public were their Carnival on April 26 and the Sports Review on May 5. The carnival featured a typical carnival atmosphere and an amateur talent contest which was won by the guitar trio of Fred Stockhecke, Raymond Miller, and Larry Cantrell. With the able co-operation of all school organizations, the homecoming parade, dance, and mid-game entertainment were all that was hoped for by returning alumni. A Judo expert, a hypno- tist, and a gymnastic team were among the assembly programs brought to Unity this year by the Student Council. The Student Council of Unity is composed of four elected officers, the class Presidents and a Representative of each organization. The members of this year’s Council are: President, Gerhard Jung; Vice-President, Linda Bowers; Secretary, Nancy Rutledge; Treasurer, Karen Shipe; Representatives Fred Stockhecke, Jerry Houdy- shell, Paul Mealiff, David Strickler, Judy Peter, Kathleen Duncan, John Hendrickson, Larry Cornwell, Lois Steiner, Nancy Dedert, Sandra Schafer, Janeen Baker, Melvin Caldwell, Carol Kropp, Connie Cornwell, Barbara Emmert, Bob Worman, and Sharon Harms. Co-Sponsors: Mr. Shrader and Mr. Cameron. Seven senior girls and six junior girls were chosen by their classmates to be candidates for Homecoming Queen. These girls were: Karen Shipe, Sandra Schafer, Linda Bowers, Janeen Baker, Sondra Baker, Connie Cornwell, Judy Peter, Nancy Daugherty, Nancy Rutledge, Lois Steiner, Sandra Holtman,Judith Evans, Maureen Caley. One week later, the entire student body voted for four seniors and three juniors. The girl receiving the highest number of votes was declared Queen and the next three high in each class became members of her Court, 16 HOMECOMING QUEEN HOMECOMING FLOATS Senior Sophomore Freshman Junior, First F.H.A. The members are major letter winners and minor letter winners in football, bas- ketball, baseball and track. The prime purpose of the organization is to promote interest, to improve sportsmanship and to create the enthusiastic team spirit which is the life- blood of athletics. The president of VK this year was Raymond Morley, vice-president, Donald Cogburn; and secretary-treasurer Bill Moore. The boys were well represented in the Homecoming this year with a very, very old and dilapidated motor car which all but stole the show in the parade. The annual dance was an affair not to be forgotten and sales of soda pop and candy enabled the boys to purchase new striped track shirts and sweat suits, and equipment which was sorely needed. 23 BASKETBALL Coaches Stump and Jones. Many people consider this a successful season on the basis that all but one of the basketball squad will be back next year. However, it is possible that the team was capable of doing just a lit- tle better than they did. Close scores indicate that there were some thrillers,” and fans are looking forward to the 1958-59 season. Scores were as follows: Those we won: Bardolph 67-64, West Pike 80-67, Western 67-62, Payson 49-47, Nauvoo 60-48, Bowen 65-55, West Pike 44-39, Plymouth 54-52, Central 83-76, Northwestern 67-65, Dallas City 97-49, LaHarpe 93-75. Those we lost--Barry 45-58, Colchester 51-55, Hamilton 54-55, Pittsfield 52-74, Payson 57-67, Warsaw 56-59, Barry 41-43, Liberty 71-75, Augusta 45-74, Brown County 55-71, Warsaw 75-82, Liberty 50-74. We placed second in the Wenois Tourney and third at Payson. The 1957-58 season was a banner one for the Junior Varsity Mustangs as they wound up the year with a seventeen won and six lost record. Among the wins were two particularly interesting games, one when Unity defeated St. Mary of Mt. Sterling in a return game after St. Mary had beaten them earlier in the year, the second when in the last game of the season an all sophomore team defeated a Notre Dame team who had a record of 18 and 3. Coach Stump was extremely happy over the results of the season which were as follows: The wins: West Pike 71-53, Colchester 67-56, Hamilton 63-53, Payson 88-39, Nauvoo 73-20, Warsaw 52-46, Bowen 58-44, Plymouth 57-53; Liberty 88-57, Northwestern 56-52, Liberty 76-49, St. Mary 49-38, Dallas City 73-41, Augusta 54-52, LaHarpe 79-71, Notre Dame 50-49. The losses: Bar- dolph 44-54, St. Mary 38-47, Western 62-64, Barry 47-56, Central 53-57, Brown County 66-68. Regardless of the season’s results of four wins and seven losses, the yearling Mustangs completed a year of valuable experience and one salted down with bad luck and heartbreak. Many of the games played could have easily gone the other way. The results were as follows: The wins: St. Mary 35-27, 53-52, Payson 61-43, Plymouth 59-44. The losses: Quincy 43-41 (overtime), Plymouth 47-55, Central 33-44, Liberty 28-38, Payson 30-34, Central 36-60, Notre Dame 42-45, Pittsfield 39-48. Stockhecke, Stone. Baecker. Nineteen fifty marked the most successful season within recent years in track and field at Unity. The Mustang thinlyclads set and established several new records and brought about respectable recog- nition in both the Lamoine Valley and Wenois conferences. Of approximately twenty-five boys partici- pating at one time or another during the season, twelve won points in either individual events or the relays. The outstanding boys listed in the order of their total points for the season without relay scores are Fred Stockhecke, 34 1 2 points from shot, discus, broadjump and pole vault; John Frese, 31 points mile and 880; Larry Beeler, 21 1 2 points high jump and pole vault; Grant Baecker, 16 points high and low hurdles and broad jump; Fred Meyers, 13 1 2 points low hurdles and pole vault; Ray Morley, 8 points 880, 440 and mile; John Hendrickson, 7 points 100 and 220; Dick Agard 1 1 2 points high hurdles and 440. Stock- hecke, Frese, Baecker, Hendrickson, Morley and Meyers also picked up additional points in the relays. Also freshmen Mike Myers, Ray Muegge, Farrel Brown and Hillary Parrack garnered points in relays. The letter winners for the season were Stockhecke, Frese, Beeler, Baecker, Fred Meyers, Morley, and Hendrickson. The highlights of the season were Fred Stockhecke’s heave of the shot put in the quadrangular at Payson of 45 feet 6 1 2 inches which won first and established a new Unity record. John Frese, already the Wenois conference mile record holder from 1957 in the time of 4:56 ran a faster 4:54’.5 to break his own mark, set a new record and win the event again this year. Larry Beeler high jumped 5 ft. 8 in. in the tough Quincy Relays to take 4th place but in so doing tied the old Adams County record and Mendon and Unity record of Charles Starr set in 1929. Grant Baecker’s time of 18.9 will go down as an established record in the 120 yard high hurdles as no other records were available for this event. Fred Meyers’ time of 22.9 in the 180 yard low hurdles is established on the same principle. 26 BASEBALL Coach Jones, Worman. Parrack, Haistings, Taylor, Mealiff, Hendrickson. Reckers, Graff, Cramm, Sellars, Cantrell Baecker, Beverly, Cornwell. McClelland, Porter. Beverly, Conover, Koontz, Rand. The Unity High baseball squad had one of its most successful seasons with a record of six wins and four losses. This is the first time that a Unity baseball squad has fin- ished above .500 since 1950. We won; Augusta 4-3, Hamilton 6-2, Dallas City 2-0, Warsaw 11-1, LaHarpe 7-2, and Plymouth 10-8. We lost: Colchester 17-3, Western 3-1, Northwestern 8-0, Augusta 8-3. AGRICULTURE The Unity chapter of the Future Farmers of America was made up of 74 members carrying about 120 productive projects. Officers of the organization were: President George Evans, Vice-President Ronald Cramm; Treasurer Lavern Shaffer; Secretary Dean Woodruff; Reporter Bob Porter; Sentinel Bub Lubker, SS Representative John Hendrickson. Much work and many activities claimed the boys’ time. Some of the more important accomplish- ments were as follows: 13 boys exhibited 60 head of livestock at the Sec. 13 Livestock show, 22 boys exhibited grain from their projects, the livestock judging team was a blue ribbon team in the state con- test, five boys attended the American Royal Livestock show at Kansas City. Our chapter was host to the Sec. 13 livestock judging contest and the Junior and Senior boys participated in the Adams County Farm Bureau-FFA Get-Acquainted Program. Activities sponsored included the concessions at the Adams County Junior Livestock sale, a donkey baseball game, FFA-FHA dance, and this year, for the first time, the mothers, as well as the dads were invited to the annual banquet. As in years past the farm shop was well utilized. Many boys constructed individual shop projects as well as projects for farmers of the area. Our shop classes constructed seven picnic tables for the Ursa Lions Club to be placed in the new park at Meyer. The highlight of the year was Lavern Shaffer being a successful candidate for the State Farmer FFA Degree which will be awarded at Springfield on the night of June 12. AGRICULTURE 29 AG - SHOP HOMEMAKING Officers of FHA this year were: President Nancy Ruutledge; Vice- President Lois Steiner; Secretary Sandra Schafer; Treasurer Judith Evans; Parliamentarian Frances Elston; Public Relations Sandra Holtman; Recreation Helen Heub- ner; Projects Chairman Nancy Ip- pensen; Historian Judy Reiter. Ninety-three girls were enrolled in the homemaking department’s three-year program. We have included units on grooming, sewing, consumer buying, family living, preparation for marriage, child and infant care, interior decoration and foods. Some of these units have included special projects. The sophomores sponsored a nursery school for a two-week period in the spring. A dinner was prepared and served to the Board of Education by the homemaking III class. All girls made a garment during their sewing unit. Closely related to the department is the Future Homemakers of America organization, a national club, which is open to membership to all girls who are or have been enrolled in vocational homemaking. This year 92 girls in our chapter sponsored a Hobo Day, a Mother-Daughter Christmas Tea, a dance, and the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet. The Music Department of Unity had an active and successful year during the 1957-58 school term. The band was active before the opening of school in the fall by participating in the State Fair band competition and providing the community with numerous concerts. Money donated from the communities for the concerts helped toward the later purchase of choir robes for the chorus. During the football season, the marching band gave a number of performances under the lights during the home games. The band also performed in three parades--the Quincy Red Feather, the Western State University Homecoming, and our own Homecoming. Judith Evans was drum majorette this year. Carol Tribbett and Nancy Tieken were the twirlers. The color guard was made up of Shirley Brickman, Sgt., Mary Hemming, Marion Ballard, Shaaron Duke, Eunice Carolan, and Eddie Powell. They carried the American flag donated by the American Legion Bear Creek Post for use in the outdoor performances and the recently acquired school band flag donated by the Music Boosters. The Adams County Music Panorama was held during November with Unity musicians in the group of 125 bandsmen, 110 orchestra members, and the 250-voice chorus. At Christmas time the concert band and the chorus joined in a concert. They combined in the final number called A Merry Christmas,” which was a medley of familiar Christmas carols. The audience also participated in this number. 38 THE BAND REAR: Daryl Priepot, Nancy Diedert, Barbara Brickman, Judy Reiter, Judy Peter. (Picture by Burch of Davenport) As usual the basketball season was a busy time for the band for they played at all home games and several pep meetings. They also played for Parrack’s Pancake Day and the Ursa Elevator Co-op in con- junction with the chorus. The solos and ensembles going to contest this year gained the highest percentage of Superiors that a group from Unity has attained. The band entries numbered 18 with 12 rating Superior and the remaining 6 were of Excellent rating. The mixed chorus and band both earned Excellent ratings at District. Re- sults of these and those attained in the State contest are listed on the Awards page. The entire Music Department had the pleasure of moving into their newly finished building on Jan- uary 8. This building joins the gymnasium and houses a large room with space to accommodate a 90-piece band, four practice rooms, and cabinet space for storing music, uniforms and robes. The five musicians chosen to represent Unity at the All-State Music activities at Bradley in Peoria on February 14 and 15 were: Mary Baker, Karen Shipe, Kent Halsey, John Hendrickson, and Mary Ellen Carolan. In addition to the singing of the chorus, the band provided music for the Baccalaureate and Com- mencement programs. 39 CHORUS TOP ROW: Northrup, Schroeder, Stone, Cramm, Hendrickson, Cogburn, Cramm. Seventy members were enrolled at the beginning of the school year with Mrs. Joan Hill as director. The annual Adams County Music Panorama, held in December at Notre Dame High School in Quincy, had in its 300-voice chorus about 40 members of the Unity chorus. The chorus, under Mrs. Hill’s direction, appeared in the annual joint Christmas Concert with the band. In January Mr. Wilford Nelson assumed the direction of the chorus along with his elementary vocal teaching in Unit 4 February 4 saw four of our chorus members in Peoria to take part in the All-State High School Chorus. This chorus is annually made up with selected singers from all high schools in Illinois. Just days before the District Music Contest in Canton, the Music Boosters club of Unity presented the chorus with 70 new choir robes. The white satin collars were made by the mothers of band and chorus members. The robes are a great addition and represent a cash outlay of $1200. The annual Spring Concert was presented in April with the band. Activi- ties for the season were concluded during Commencement week with the chorus singing for Baccalaureate and Com- mencement. MUSIC In May the first dance band was organized to supplement the instrumental program. It is made up of 18 boys and girls from both grade and high school. They played at the jazz assem- bly program the last day of school. Two numbers especial- ly enjoyed were My Fair Lady by Lerner and Loewe and Blue Jean Blues. The music students and parents enjoyed a potluck supper the evening of May 12 at which time plans for next year’s Music Boosters were formed. Pictured are officers of the club--Mrs. Carolan, Mrs. Ash, and Mrs. Grotz. DRIVER EDUCATION A total of 86 students enrolled in the Driver Education course, 57 in the first semester and 29 in the second semester. Each student receives more than 30 hours of classroom work and 6 hours of actual behind the wheel driving, plus observation time. The purpose of the course is to teach each driver the basic fundamentals of driving so that they will become safe, courteous and sound drivers. It is an Illinois state law that each student must take the classroom phase before they graduate. With more and more drivers on our streets and highways, it is very important that we educate those drivers in the best way possible. Better drivers mean fewer deaths. Mr. Keane was the instructor. Janeen Baker was elected president; Fred Stockhecke, vice-president; Anita Jo Welling, secretary-treasurer; Karen Shipe, reporter andGerhard Jung represented us in the Student Senate. We chose Mr. Merlin Jones as our class sponsor. We took part in different activities and learned more about our high school career. Our float in the Homecoming parade won third prize, which made us feel very good. As freshmen, we had a basket- ball team and elected Linda Bowers, Connie Cornwell, Sandra Schafer and Janeen Baker as our cheer- leaders. At the Dogpatch Hoedown, sponsored by the Yearbook and Camera Club, Janeen Baker and Fred Stockhecke were chosen Daisy Mae and Lil’ Abner. Anita Jo Welling and Janeen Baker were candidates for F.F.A. Sweetheart. Anita Jo was chosen. We again entered the doors of Unity in the fall of 1955 as a class of sixty-five silly sophomores. As our class officers we elected Jane Hunter as president; Sandra Schafer, vice-president; Ruth Tenvorde, secretary-treasurer; Janeen Baker, reporter; and to represent us in the Student Senate, we elected Fred Stockhecke. Of the five varsity cheerleaders, four were chosen from our class. They were Linda Bowers, Connie Cornwell, Sandra Schafer and Janeen Baker. On January 18, 1956, Junior Homan joined our class. He was formerly from Bowen. Connie Cornwell and Lowell McClelland represented our class as the Sherwood Shuffle sponsored by the Science Club and Yearbook. Karen Shipe and Janeen Baker were candidates for F.F.A. Sweetheart. In the fall of 1956 fifty-five jolly juniors enrolled at Unity. Officers elected for the year were Jerry Stone, president; Sandra Schafer, vice-president; Janeen Baker, secretary; Karen Shipe, treasurer. Pan- chetta Grotz represented our class in the Student Senate and Nancy Rutledge reported our news. Our big project of the year was the selling of magazines. We broke all records at Unity by selling $2,201. Helen Heubner was high salesman and Ruby Lucking second; Panchetta Grotz, third; Mary Baker, fourth. Again we were proud to have the same four girls chosen to serve on the varsity cheerleading group. At our Homecoming, Connie Cornwell, Nancy Rutledge, and Sandra Schafer were chosen from our class to be in the Queen’s Court. Calm Yourself” was the title of our Junior Class play. We sponsored a dance entitled The Jean and Sock Hop. Linda Bowers and Fred Stockhecke represented our class at the Calypso Dance sponsored by the Science-Camera Club andYearbookStaff. Nancy Rutledge and Sandra Schafer were candidates for F.F.A. Sweetheart. In May we were hosts to the seniors, faculty, and board members at the annual Junior-Senior banquet and prom in the Mark Twain Hotel in HannibaL In the spring of this year we chose Janeen Baker to represent us at Girls’ State; Fred Stockhecke and Jerry Stone to represent us at Boys’ State; and Judy Peter at Conservation Camp. Gerhard Jung was elected to serve as president of the Student Senate for our senior year. Fifty-three seniors entered the doors of Unity in a more sophisticated manner in the fall of 1957. Fred Stockhecke was elected president; Bill Moore, vice-president; Judy Peter, secretary; and Raymond Morley, treasurer. Connie Cornwell represented us in the Student Senate. Mrs. Louise Kramer enrolled with us this year. Linda Bowers, Connie Cornwell, and Sandra Schafer were elected varsity cheerleaders. We are proud to say that those three girls were cheerleaders all four years of their high school career. As Queen of the Homecoming festivities this year, Connie Corn- well was our choice. Janeen Baker, Sandra Schafer and Nancy Rutledge were in her court. In February we sponsored the Cupid’s Serenade,’’ Janeen Baker and Bill Moore represented our class at the S-P-Y Dance” sponsored by the Science, Photography, and Yearbook Staffs. Judy Peter was chosen F.F.A. Sweetheart with Karen Shipe also being a candidate. We sponsored a class play en- titled A Pair of Country Kids.” On May 10, we were guests of the juniors at the Junior-Senior banquet and prom in the Flamingo Room. Judy Peter and Fred Stockhecke were chosen Prom Queen and King. Our last program in Unity’s gym as students will be our class night program with the theme being, “On the Waterfront. We chose as our colors. Rose and White and our flower, the Rose. On May 23, we will walk across the stage to receive our diplomas. This will end our high school career and “With the Ropes of the Past We Will Ring the Bells of the Future,”--our class motto. 61 JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM Fred Stockhecke, Judith Peter--King and Queen of the Prom Flamingo Room, May 10, 1958 CLASS NIGHT 'On the Waterfront, Unity High Gym May 16, 1958 BACCALAUREATE Unity High School Gymnasium Sunday Evening, May 18, 1958 8:00 P.
