Charles Gene Carolan April 12, 1938 - November 2, 1955 Thy Will Be Done Amen QLom Miitofu During our four years at Unity High, we were directed by a number of class officers-and sponsors. Our presidents were Connie Merker, Dorothy Henerhoff, Larry Lewis, and Dave Grimmer. Our vice- presidents were Juliann Cramm, Linda McClelland, (2 years) and Allen Dierker. Gene Carolan was our secretary-treasurer in the first year. Later secretaries were Dwight Shupe, Rachel Baker, and Marybelle Smith; treasurers were Richard Porter, Bill Fessler, and Ethel Myers. Representing us on the Student Senate were Ruth Hufendick, Dorothy Henerhoff and Bill Fessler. Dwight Shupe, Bill Fessler, Shirley Cantrell and Elma Wessinger were our reporters. Miss Heitholt, Mrs. Morgan, Mr. Dolan and Mr. Waters assisted Mr. Hill as sponsors. When we were Freshmen and Sophomores, our Homecoming Floats won 3rd prize in the parade but we improved and won second with our Junior and Senior floats. In the fall of 1952, sixty-three green freshmen entered the doors of Unity. We held two parties during that year--a Christmas party and a Skating party. September, 1953 found sixty-two sillySophomores returningtoUnity. A Skating party and a Scavanger Hunt were held. Dave Grimmer was selected to represent the class at Boys' State. Fifty-seven jolly Juniors enrolled in the fall of 1954. We sold magazines amounting to $1448.70 in the fall and sponsored the annual Holiday Dance in December. We presented our Class Play, GRANDAD STEPS OUT, in ApriL In May we were hosts to the Seniors, Faculty, and Board Members at the annual Junior-Senior banquet and dance at the Lincoln-Douglas hotel in Quincy. In the spring of this year, we chose Rachel Baker to represent us at Girls’ State; Larry Lewis to represent us at Boys' State, and Elma Wessinger at Conservation Camp. Dick Moore was elected president of Student Senate. He was elected to this office again in our Senior year. Fifty-three studious Seniors came back for their last year. Early in the fall we were saddened by the tragic death of one of our popular classmates. Gene Carolan. Gene was instantly killed in a car accident. The class, sponsors, as well as many other students and teachers, attended his funeral at St. Edward’s church on November 7. We presented our class play, NO BOYS ALLOWED, in November, sponsored the annual Valentine dance in February, and were guests of the Seniors at the banquet held at Rushville. As a gift to the school, we left one hundred dollars to be used for a water cooler for the gym. The remaining money will be added to the Quarterback Fund for lights for the football field. The theme of our class night was “Backwoods, and we spent delightful days in the Ozarks on our Senior Trip. (iltvM [i'jwpfieaf Report of the tenth reunion of the class of 56 held in May, 1966 at the Meetin’ House in Dogpatch: JOAN ALGER, the great singing star of Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, teaches yodling as a side line. BETTY ASH now owns the Wrigley Chewing Gum Company located in Marcelline, Illinois. Betty always gives generous samples to those who employ her as a nurse. RACHEL BAKER has returned to Unity as a Home Economics teacher. Of course, the biology teacher is Mr. W. Speck. ETHEL BEELER is now putting her Home Economics into practice bymanaging her Four Finlay Farmers.” CLAUDINE CALEY, president of the Saddle Club, has just entered Sardini into the Kentucky Derby. Riding Sardini will be none other than the famous jockey, Harold Doyle. PAT STARR and CONNIE WOOLSEY are trumpet and clarinet players for the Harmels All Girl Orchestra.” Their first appearance was when they played for ROEAN CRABTREE'S wedding. Roean is now training her children to be sheepherders like their father. Mrs. Wayne Orr, the former JULIANN CRAMM is now owner of the Quincy Beauty Academy. Juliann gets no business from her husband and three little boys as they have naturally curly hair. Mrs. Ronald Likes, the former KAREN DEDERT, is busy taking care of her 6- year-old twins--boys. JEANIE DEDERT, Unity's 1955-56 Homecoming Queen has grown in popularity and is now holding the title of Mrs. America.” BILL FESSLER has come out with a new rocket to the moon that goes a thousand million billion trillion miles per minute. SANDY MC CLELLAND was the first passenger to land on the moon and now runs a hot dog stand there. MAURICE FLINT has an important job lighting the three candles on MYRNA FRAZIER'S piano for her nightly T V program. Myrna’s motto is “ Anything Liberace can do, I can do better.” Patrolman TERRY FORREST is selling dual pipes to all teenagers at wholesale price and arresting them later. JIM FRAZIER, manager of the No-Sink-Um-Boat Club which is located in Ursa, has quite a business from tourists. Coach DAVE GRIMMER has taken on the Harlem Globe Trotters. Dave has a slightly different angle which is mostly curves, meaning of course, the players are all girls. RON HARNESS, manager for the St. Louis Cardinals, has for a talent scout, Janet Homan, who travels extensively each winter. KAY HUDSON, head nurse at Mendon Community Hospital, works side-by side with Dr. Bob Harms who is a well-known surgeon. DOROTHY HENERHOFF and CONNIE MERKER have their own TV talent show for the World’s Outstanding Pantomimics. JOAN KOONTZ owns a fleet of trucks and services candy machines for all schools in Unit 4. Her latest candy bar is Harm’s Heavenly Haven named after that sweet girl, JOAN HARMS. By the way, Joan perfected the recipe. LINDA MC CLELLAND has a full-time job at Murphy’s Service Station where she presents jazz concerts every Monday night to promote business. ADALENE MILLER and SHIRLEY CANTRELL are co-owners of the Showboat Hotel in Myer where JEANIE MITCHELL is chief cook and bottle washer. MARCIA MURRY patronizes this nationally known hotel because she is defending her champion- ship as National Speedboat Champion in the P-38 class in the races held on the Mississippi there each year. HELEN WEMHONER has a beauty salon in this same hotel and spe- cializes in REAL blonde rinses. ETHEL MYERS is now Dean of Women at Southern Illinois University where DICK MOORE continues to attend because the Dean gets him dates with the Co-eds. JIM NIGHTINGALE has quite a demand for his new invention, the honey dispenser. BOB PHILLIPS is writing a new book entitled, Man’s Second-Best-Friend—Teeth.” 19
