Charles Gene Carolan April 12, 1938 - November 2, 1955 Thy Will Be Done Amen QLom Miitofu During our four years at Unity High, we were directed by a number of class officers-and sponsors. Our presidents were Connie Merker, Dorothy Henerhoff, Larry Lewis, and Dave Grimmer. Our vice- presidents were Juliann Cramm, Linda McClelland, (2 years) and Allen Dierker. Gene Carolan was our secretary-treasurer in the first year. Later secretaries were Dwight Shupe, Rachel Baker, and Marybelle Smith; treasurers were Richard Porter, Bill Fessler, and Ethel Myers. Representing us on the Student Senate were Ruth Hufendick, Dorothy Henerhoff and Bill Fessler. Dwight Shupe, Bill Fessler, Shirley Cantrell and Elma Wessinger were our reporters. Miss Heitholt, Mrs. Morgan, Mr. Dolan and Mr. Waters assisted Mr. Hill as sponsors. When we were Freshmen and Sophomores, our Homecoming Floats won 3rd prize in the parade but we improved and won second with our Junior and Senior floats. In the fall of 1952, sixty-three green freshmen entered the doors of Unity. We held two parties during that year--a Christmas party and a Skating party. September, 1953 found sixty-two sillySophomores returningtoUnity. A Skating party and a Scavanger Hunt were held. Dave Grimmer was selected to represent the class at Boys' State. Fifty-seven jolly Juniors enrolled in the fall of 1954. We sold magazines amounting to $1448.70 in the fall and sponsored the annual Holiday Dance in December. We presented our Class Play, GRANDAD STEPS OUT, in ApriL In May we were hosts to the Seniors, Faculty, and Board Members at the annual Junior-Senior banquet and dance at the Lincoln-Douglas hotel in Quincy. In the spring of this year, we chose Rachel Baker to represent us at Girls’ State; Larry Lewis to represent us at Boys' State, and Elma Wessinger at Conservation Camp. Dick Moore was elected president of Student Senate. He was elected to this office again in our Senior year. Fifty-three studious Seniors came back for their last year. Early in the fall we were saddened by the tragic death of one of our popular classmates. Gene Carolan. Gene was instantly killed in a car accident. The class, sponsors, as well as many other students and teachers, attended his funeral at St. Edward’s church on November 7. We presented our class play, NO BOYS ALLOWED, in November, sponsored the annual Valentine dance in February, and were guests of the Seniors at the banquet held at Rushville. As a gift to the school, we left one hundred dollars to be used for a water cooler for the gym. The remaining money will be added to the Quarterback Fund for lights for the football field. The theme of our class night was “Backwoods, and we spent delightful days in the Ozarks on our Senior Trip.
