Charles Gene Carolan April 12, 1938 - November 2, 1955 Thy Will Be Done Amen QLom Miitofu During our four years at Unity High, we were directed by a number of class officers-and sponsors. Our presidents were Connie Merker, Dorothy Henerhoff, Larry Lewis, and Dave Grimmer. Our vice- presidents were Juliann Cramm, Linda McClelland, (2 years) and Allen Dierker. Gene Carolan was our secretary-treasurer in the first year. Later secretaries were Dwight Shupe, Rachel Baker, and Marybelle Smith; treasurers were Richard Porter, Bill Fessler, and Ethel Myers. Representing us on the Student Senate were Ruth Hufendick, Dorothy Henerhoff and Bill Fessler. Dwight Shupe, Bill Fessler, Shirley Cantrell and Elma Wessinger were our reporters. Miss Heitholt, Mrs. Morgan, Mr. Dolan and Mr. Waters assisted Mr. Hill as sponsors. When we were Freshmen and Sophomores, our Homecoming Floats won 3rd prize in the parade but we improved and won second with our Junior and Senior floats. In the fall of 1952, sixty-three green freshmen entered the doors of Unity. We held two parties during that year--a Christmas party and a Skating party. September, 1953 found sixty-two sillySophomores returningtoUnity. A Skating party and a Scavanger Hunt were held. Dave Grimmer was selected to represent the class at Boys' State. Fifty-seven jolly Juniors enrolled in the fall of 1954. We sold magazines amounting to $1448.70 in the fall and sponsored the annual Holiday Dance in December. We presented our Class Play, GRANDAD STEPS OUT, in ApriL In May we were hosts to the Seniors, Faculty, and Board Members at the annual Junior-Senior banquet and dance at the Lincoln-Douglas hotel in Quincy. In the spring of this year, we chose Rachel Baker to represent us at Girls’ State; Larry Lewis to represent us at Boys' State, and Elma Wessinger at Conservation Camp. Dick Moore was elected president of Student Senate. He was elected to this office again in our Senior year. Fifty-three studious Seniors came back for their last year. Early in the fall we were saddened by the tragic death of one of our popular classmates. Gene Carolan. Gene was instantly killed in a car accident. The class, sponsors, as well as many other students and teachers, attended his funeral at St. Edward’s church on November 7. We presented our class play, NO BOYS ALLOWED, in November, sponsored the annual Valentine dance in February, and were guests of the Seniors at the banquet held at Rushville. As a gift to the school, we left one hundred dollars to be used for a water cooler for the gym. The remaining money will be added to the Quarterback Fund for lights for the football field. The theme of our class night was “Backwoods, and we spent delightful days in the Ozarks on our Senior Trip. Class Mono: THE PAST FOREVER GONE; THE FUTURE STILL OUR OWN Colors: Pink and Mint Green Flower: Pink Rose 18 (iltvM [i'jwpfieaf Report of the tenth reunion of the class of 56 held in May, 1966 at the Meetin’ House in Dogpatch: JOAN ALGER, the great singing star of Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, teaches yodling as a side line. BETTY ASH now owns the Wrigley Chewing Gum Company located in Marcelline, Illinois. Betty always gives generous samples to those who employ her as a nurse. RACHEL BAKER has returned to Unity as a Home Economics teacher. Of course, the biology teacher is Mr. W. Speck. ETHEL BEELER is now putting her Home Economics into practice bymanaging her Four Finlay Farmers.” CLAUDINE CALEY, president of the Saddle Club, has just entered Sardini into the Kentucky Derby. Riding Sardini will be none other than the famous jockey, Harold Doyle. PAT STARR and CONNIE WOOLSEY are trumpet and clarinet players for the Harmels All Girl Orchestra.” Their first appearance was when they played for ROEAN CRABTREE'S wedding. Roean is now training her children to be sheepherders like their father. Mrs. Wayne Orr, the former JULIANN CRAMM is now owner of the Quincy Beauty Academy. Juliann gets no business from her husband and three little boys as they have naturally curly hair. Mrs. Ronald Likes, the former KAREN DEDERT, is busy taking care of her 6- year-old twins--boys. JEANIE DEDERT, Unity's 1955-56 Homecoming Queen has grown in popularity and is now holding the title of Mrs. America.” BILL FESSLER has come out with a new rocket to the moon that goes a thousand million billion trillion miles per minute. SANDY MC CLELLAND was the first passenger to land on the moon and now runs a hot dog stand there. MAURICE FLINT has an important job lighting the three candles on MYRNA FRAZIER'S piano for her nightly T V program. Myrna’s motto is “ Anything Liberace can do, I can do better.” Patrolman TERRY FORREST is selling dual pipes to all teenagers at wholesale price and arresting them later. JIM FRAZIER, manager of the No-Sink-Um-Boat Club which is located in Ursa, has quite a business from tourists. Coach DAVE GRIMMER has taken on the Harlem Globe Trotters. Dave has a slightly different angle which is mostly curves, meaning of course, the players are all girls. RON HARNESS, manager for the St. Louis Cardinals, has for a talent scout, Janet Homan, who travels extensively each winter. KAY HUDSON, head nurse at Mendon Community Hospital, works side-by side with Dr. Bob Harms who is a well-known surgeon. DOROTHY HENERHOFF and CONNIE MERKER have their own TV talent show for the World’s Outstanding Pantomimics. JOAN KOONTZ owns a fleet of trucks and services candy machines for all schools in Unit 4. Her latest candy bar is Harm’s Heavenly Haven named after that sweet girl, JOAN HARMS. By the way, Joan perfected the recipe. LINDA MC CLELLAND has a full-time job at Murphy’s Service Station where she presents jazz concerts every Monday night to promote business. ADALENE MILLER and SHIRLEY CANTRELL are co-owners of the Showboat Hotel in Myer where JEANIE MITCHELL is chief cook and bottle washer. MARCIA MURRY patronizes this nationally known hotel because she is defending her champion- ship as National Speedboat Champion in the P-38 class in the races held on the Mississippi there each year. HELEN WEMHONER has a beauty salon in this same hotel and spe- cializes in REAL blonde rinses. ETHEL MYERS is now Dean of Women at Southern Illinois University where DICK MOORE continues to attend because the Dean gets him dates with the Co-eds. JIM NIGHTINGALE has quite a demand for his new invention, the honey dispenser. BOB PHILLIPS is writing a new book entitled, Man’s Second-Best-Friend—Teeth.” 19 RICHARD PORTER is a carpenter, his first job was building a new high school at Unity. The Bond issue FINALLY passed. DICK RAND is no longer running into trees because he joined the navy and is running into WAVES. RON RICHMILLER, state representative, has a bill before the house to increase the speed limit in the state of Illinois. DWIGHT SHUPE has become so popular that Eddie Fisher had to seek new fields. MARYBELLE SMITH finished her Science Project on Evolution using a chicken as a model and is now working on a new project--a film entitled, “The Egg and I.” DON SPALDING is now an Air Force Recruiter urging all to study while they are in high school. ROSEMARY TENVORDE, a student of the Patricia Stevens School for models in Chicago, has taken over Bess Myerson’s position on the “Big Payoff.” JUDITH VANCE is now U. S. Good Will Ambassador to China. MARGIE VONDERHEIDE has just released her new hillbyilly record of “Hey Joe.” It’s quite a hit. LARRY WARD has taken over the Bob Cummings TV show employing a 1958 graduate as his modeL Y ou will like this. ELMA WESSINGER was elected the FIRST lady President of the United States in the last election. BERTHA WHITE now has a column in the Windsor newspaper entitled, “Bert’s Lovelorn.” JACKIE WORMAN has taken over the Arthur Murray School of Dancing. Her star pupil is ALLEN DIERKER, who is still training for footbalL MR. HILL, our class SPONSOR, is directing a sextet composed of the little “Mory Hills.” 20 OomWM WE, the Senior Class of 1956, Unity High School, Mendon, Illinois in the County of Adams, being of sound mind and good memory, do hereby declare this to be our last Will and Testament. To the entire faculty, we leave a sincere thanks and appreciation for all they have done for us during our four years. While the chorus was getting prepared to give their Christmas Choral Concert on December 15 and to participate in the annual Choral- Festival Clinic at Macomb, the Unity marching band played and marched at our home football games. They also marched in the Culver-Stockton College and Western College Homecoming parades, and the Red Feather parade in Quincy. Formations were performed at half-time during home football games. During basketball season, the Unity band played for pep meetings and for the home games. The annual midwinter band concert was played February 19 and featur- ed Kenneth Johnson, bass horn solo with accompanist Myrna Frazier; Panchetta Grotz, flute solo with accompanist Wilford Nelson; Janeen Baker, baritone horn with band accompaniment; trumpet quartet with freshmen Max Koontz, Jerry Houdyshell, Glen Smith, and Lanny Burke; brass sextet with Rachel Baker, Dorothy Henerhoff, Betty Ash, Gary Hemming, Ronnie Warning, and Kenneth Johnson. This year, the Music Boosters Club was organized with Mrs. Julia Grotz as president. This organization was formed to help with the pro- motion of music and good will among the people living in this school dis- trict. They financed anewpiccolo, and provided refreshments at our Spring Concert. The district contest was held in Bushnell-Prairie City. We had 25 entries and although the Superior ratings were few, all contestants received an award. We had 25 Excellent ratings and one Superior, the latter re- ceiving an Excellent rating at State. The Spring Concert with band and chorus was a fine climax to the year’s work. The concert was on the modern side--“Joshua,” “Colorama,” “Rock-a-round the Clock,” “Oh, John,” etc. The band and chorus with the absence of the graduating seniors provided music for Commencement. In basketball, the Varsity team won 18 and lost 6. In the Regional Tournament they beat Barry but lost to Notre Dame. In the Payson Holiday, they came in second, beating Notre Dame and losing to Pittsfield. Also, they won second place trophy in the Wenois by beating Barry and losing to Central. In the Freshman Tournament, our boys won second, losing to Quincy Junior High after defeating Augusta and Plymouth. In baseball, the Mustangs won five and lost eight. The sports season was closed with a very successful Athletic Banquet in the Gym on May 19. Alex Saudargas, coach of the West Rockford High School teams (State Winners in both 1955 and 56) delivered an inspiring address; the ‘‘free throw” trophy was presented to Dave Grimmer by the Lions Club; and Coach Nelson, toastmaster, introduced each player on the Mustang teams. Plans are now underway for the installation of lights for night football during the coming season. 52 The Girls Athletic Association, called Unity Unicorns, boasted a membership of 90 this year. They sponsored a number of activities, the following in Quincy: Bowling at the Casino lanes on Monday evenings for eleven consecutive weeks with 80 girls or 16 teams participating; swimming at the Y M C A on the same evenings with 45 girls participating in the beginners and intermediate group. At school, the group sponsor- ed a mixed doubles badminton tournament and a mixed volleyball tournament during the noon periods. On April 14 a very successful minstrel and carnival was held in the gym; earlier in the year, the girls enter- tained the school with an assembly program. The 4-year award was earned by eight seniors--Betty Ash. Rachel Baker, Dorothy Henerhoff, Kay Hudson, Sandra McClelland, Connie Merker, Marybelle Smith, Rosemary Tenvorde. The 3-year award was given to five seniors and nine juniors; the 2-year letter to 19 sophomores, 8 juniors and 4 seniors. Twenty-four freshmen, four juniors and one senior qualified for the first year numerals. In swimming the second Red Cross test was passed by Claudine Caley, Betty Ash, Ruth Tenvorde, and Rosemary Tenvorde. The following passed the first Red Cross test; Claudine Caley, Carol Tribbett, Sandra Baker, Janice Appledorn, Nancy Daugherty, Marilyn Seals, and Kathleen Duncan. The noon period volleyball winners were Marilyn Dedert (c), Rosemary Tenvorde, Carol and Connie Heubner, Patsy Ruthledge, John Frese, Jerry Stone, Dick Porter, Jack Jones. The badminton winners were Dorothy Henerhoff and Coach Jones over Joanne Haistings and Bill Fessler. In bowling, the Round Robin Intramural Tournament ended with first place going to Marybelle Smith (c), Joan Koontz, Carol Tribbett, Claudine Caley. The Student Senate is made up of four elective officers and representatives from each class and organizations. They meet at least once each week to consider the welfare of the student body and suggest desirable policies. Homecoming each year is sponsored by this group as well as a number of assembly programs on which both students and outside talent appear. Student Senate members manage the outside bulletin board and this year at Christmas time, they built a very effective manger scene on the front lawn. A Homecoming Queen is elected each year. Six Junior girls and seven Senior girls are chosen by their classes and from this group, a queen and her court are elected by popular vote. The 1955 Queen was Jeanie Dedert and her court members were as follows: Rachel Baker, Karen Andrew, Connie Merker Marjorie Pittman, Connie Woolsey, and Beverly Weidmyer. Other members of the original group were Shirley Cantrell, Linda McClelland, Rosemare Tenvorde, Connie and Carol Heubner, Sharon Chrismer, Karen Andrew. Dana and Teresa Jones were crown - bearers.
