The Unity Student Senate, a member of both the state and national organization of Student Councils, was organized in the Spring of 1950. The purpose of this organization is to promote among the students, a knowledge of and interest in good government, to en- courage them to accept responsibilities, to stimulate a spirit of cooperation, and to aid in the development of a loyal and constructive school spirit. The Senate sponsors numerous worthwhile projects for the school. Four scheduled assembly programs by outside talent were financed by the organization. Other annual projects are school talent assembly programs, the All-School Christmas Party, and the Eighth Grade Visiting Day. The greatest undertaking, the annual Homecoming, is held in the Fall and features beside the football game, a Parade of Floats in the morning and a dance in the evening, at which time the Queen is crowned. The Queen and her Court are chosen by popular vote of the student body from the Junior and Senior girls. Football players are their escorts. The membership of the Senate is made up of four elected officers, one delegate from each organization, the president and one delegate from each of the four classes and two faculty sponsors. Candidates file petitions and make campaign speeches prior to the election held on the second Tuesday in April. Officers for the school year are; President, Marvin Austin; Vice-President, Carol Meyer; Secretary, Mary Jo McAllister; Treasurer, Dot Homan; Sponsors, Mr. Melvin, Mr. Waters.
