The Unity Student Senate, a member of both the state and national organization of Student Councils, was organized in the Spring of 1950. The purpose of this organization is to promote among the students, a knowledge of and interest in good government, to en- courage them to accept responsibilities, to stimulate a spirit of cooperation, and to aid in the development of a loyal and constructive school spirit. The Senate sponsors numerous worthwhile projects for the school. Four scheduled assembly programs by outside talent were financed by the organization. Other annual projects are school talent assembly programs, the All-School Christmas Party, and the Eighth Grade Visiting Day. The greatest undertaking, the annual Homecoming, is held in the Fall and features beside the football game, a Parade of Floats in the morning and a dance in the evening, at which time the Queen is crowned. The Queen and her Court are chosen by popular vote of the student body from the Junior and Senior girls. Football players are their escorts. The membership of the Senate is made up of four elected officers, one delegate from each organization, the president and one delegate from each of the four classes and two faculty sponsors. James Emmert is now pilot of the Trans-Atla Air Lines where he enjoys his work very much. Dora Dierker rides by on one of her own horses, Lucky Elmer, from the El Rancho Ursa Ranch. Floyd Heubner is now quite a star at the Gem City Speedway. He has a hot rod that goes almost 250 knots. Another person comes up—he says There's a ford in your future --it's Lloyd Hoffman--Ford Tycoon at New York. Dorothy Homan has become immensely wealthy from tips she has received as a taxicab driver in Washington, D.C. (Class Night) The Senior Class Class History of 1952 In the year nineteen hundred and forty-eight Unity welcomed sixty-two freshmen to its folds. All sections of the district were well represented by the freshmen members from the various areas within the district. In the fall, during the first six weeks, the freshmen body chose its officers. They were as follows: President, Dick McClelland: Vice-President, Marvin Austin; Secretary, Betty Koontz; Treasurer, Gene Rowbotham; and Reporter, Irene Martin. Some important activities in which the freshman class members took part were: the district speech contest in which Maureen Tallcott won in her division: the parade in Quincy in which Unity's band took part, and proved to be a new and exciting experience for most of the freshmen; the band contest; the district voice contest, and FHA and GAA activities. Many freshmen entered into the extra-curricular activities. Those boys who went out for baseball were: Gene Rowbotham, Jim Hecklesmiller, Dick McClelland, and Jack Carolan. The class was proud of Jim Hecklesmiller who was an active player on the basketball team. We were also proud of our cheer leader, Faith Kennady, and Maureen Tallcott, one of Unity's five twirlers. The Sophomore Class of 1950 had fifty students of which twenty-eight were girls and twenty-two were boys. The class chose Mr. Melvin as their class sponsor. We elected our officers at the beginning of the year; they were: President, Jim Hecklesmiller; Vice-President, Gene Rowbotham; Secretary, Joyce Glay; Treasurer, Peggy Taylor, and Reporter, Dot Homan. The class took a great interest in sports. The boys who went out for football were: Bob Hufendick, Vern Lubker, Bruce Beckman, Bill Califf, Harvey Houdyshell, James Emmert, Gene Rowbotham, Jack Hyer, Jack Carolan, and Jim Hecklesmiller. The Sophomore boys who took part in basketball were: Jim Emmert, Jack Carolan, Jim Hecklesmiller and Gene Rowbotham. From the five cheerleaders elected, two were Sophomores. They were Maureen Tallcott and Dot Homan. Marvin Austin was one of the two foot ball managers. Harvey Houdyshell and Jack Hyer were basketball managers. The Sophomores who took an active part in band were: Marvin Austin, Elaine Dedert, Betty Koontz, Mary Jo McAllister, John O'Brien, Pat O'Brien and Maureen Tallcott. The girls who enjoyed singing and joined the chorus which proved to be a lot of fun were: Elaine Dedert, Joyce Glay, Betty Koontz, Patsy Sill, Francis Muegge, Rachel Smith, Norma Stockhecke, Donna Sprenger, and Maureen Tallcott. We enjoyed a class party which was held on February 7 at the school. Our class was well rperesented in the school plays. John O'Brien was in the Junior play Mother Was A Freshman. Bruce Beckman, Jack Carolan, Betty Koontz, and Mary Jo McAllister were four of the sixteen characters in the Senior play Life With Father. As Juniors, 47 of us returned to Unity High School in 1952. We elected the following officers: President, Mary Jo McAllister; Vice-President, Gene Rowbotham; Secretary, Joyce Glay; Treasurer, Jack Carolan; Reporter, Frances Muegge; Representative, Norma Stockhecke. Our magazine sale was very successful. We sold a total of $1551.40, for which we received a plaque. Rachel Smith who sold the most magazines received a gold wrist watch. The Junior Play was also a success. Class members in the cast were: Donna Sprenger, Virginia Rabe, Norma Stockhecke, Joyce Glay, Pat O'Brien, Phyllis Henze, Johnny O'Brien and Marvin Austin. The Junior-Senior Banquet was held at Spring Lake Country Club on May 4. Jim Delabar's Orchestra furnished the music. Forty-three seniors reported in the fall of 1951 to finish their four years of high school. We are proud to say that we are the first class to have spent all four years under the name of Unity High School. Our class officers were elected shortly after school opened. They are: Mary Jo McAllister, president; Gene Rowbotham, vice-president; Betty Koontz, secretary; Marvin Austin, treasurer; Dorothy Homan, reporter; Bruce Beckman, Student Senate Representative. Our sponsors are Miss Austin and Mr. Waters. In the fall our senior pictures were taken by the Burch Studio photographer at school. During the year we were active in sponsoring such activities as the Valentine Dance, a Skating Party, the Paper Drive, and the play Harvey. Seniors in the play cast were: Marvin Austin, Jack Carolan, Lyle Snyder, Bruce Beckman, Mary Jo McAllister, Maureen Tallcott, Betty Koontz, Liz Nichols. The class visited Western State College at Macomb on March 19. We are leaving a gift of one hundred dollars to the school to be used for water coolers. Climaxing our senior year, we will always remember our trip to Chicago, Class Night, Baccalaureate, and at last, our DIPLOMAS. Although we bid farewell to UHS, we shall never forget the gay times we had beneath its portals. We shall always remember with affection, our principal, Cyril Waters, our superintendent, Earl Hudson, and the other members of the faculty who aided us in furthering our education.
