1987 SILHOUETTE Unity Christian High School Hudsonville, Michigan Juniors 42 Sophomores Honors Sports 94 Organizations 128 Events 148 .'AViA DEDICATION This year we dedicate the Silhouette to two people. The first is a person who always has time to listen to someone’s concerns, helping them through the rough times and the not so rough times. Through his teaching and counseling, he has been a good Christian example to all the students. He has been here at Unity for 31 years and now plans to retire. He is Mr. Henry DeWitt and we wish him the best of luck in the future!! The second is someone who has a smile on his face constantly. He has been working here at Unity for 20 years. He keeps the maintenance up on the school and also keeps the school clean. We all appreciate him very much and enjoy being around him. He is John Vander Helm. During the week there were special dress-up days, and class competition gave us a chance to exhibit our class and school spirit. The competition was completed with the parade of floats made by each of the classes. The theme chosen this year centered around decades. The seniors proudly displayed an exhibit featuring “The 20’s.” The juniors created a float dealing with “The 60’s.” The sophomore class showed a well constructed float featuring “The Future.” The class of 1977 was warmly welcomed back by representatives from each class. All present thoroughly enjoyed watching the Saders take on the Comets of Kalamazoo Christian. SENIORS Su San 'dee dldtrink uditk n ynn . Mr. Fondse was chosen as the guest speaker and he used actual experiences to show God’s presence in our lives and His plan for the future. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope in the future.” The service concluded with the singing of the class song. Refreshments were served after the service giving students, parents and teachers a time to socialize. The all-knowing Mr. Fondse tells the Graduates about their pasts. Julie Visser and Holle Dodde provide the Prelude. Leanne Stulp, Mark Haan, and Vince Woltjer thanked our Lord in prayer. Julie Dornbush accompanied the congregational singing and Played the Postlude. Seniors from the class of 1987 sang their class song for the last time. 55SS 35 S3 Seniors and Cedar Point The seniors and their sponsors went to Cedar Point for their class trip. After leaving Unity (very early), the seniors made their way there on four buses. When they finally received their tickets, the class was let loose in the park. The day could be described as perfect: the weather was warm but yet there was a cool breeze and the rides had very short lines. When the day was finally over, everyone could look back at all the fun they had together as friends. Dawn and Amy. our Indian girls. What have they been up to? There’s that great smile! GRADUATION Friday, June 12, 1987, was the final time the entire class of 1987 was together. Our education through high school was completed and we could be thankful for many things. One of those things was a Christian education. We know how much our parents gave up for us, and we can never thank them enough for it. Unity Christian High School is Special to us, and as Nancy Motman said in her speech, “Goodbye, Unity. You’ll forever be in our hearts.” lining up Mr. Koop opens with prayer. the processional Vicki Jeurink receives her diploma. Finally the diploma. Ron Andersen starts things off with the reception of his diploma. Brent DeWeerd, one of the valedictorians, addresses the class. I now present the class of 1987! 39 £ 40 LET’S GO ROMAN!!! I think you're supposed to be standing If only I could lace this skate The Romans had roller skates? At 8:00 on June 12, Unity’s seniors were graduating. At 11:30, they were leaving school for a great party that would take them from Hudsonville to Holland to Comstock Park to Grand Rapids and back again by 7:30 the next morning. The graduates enjoyed a night of roller skating, crazy bowling, eating and playing games. The night was enjoyed by all, and was a great way to wrap up three years of Unity. It is a time of sharing and fellowship with God. This is an uplifting experience in which we have a few moments to prepare ourselves for the busy day which lies ahead. We had a variety of chapel speakers and groups which led us in different ways of praising our Lord. Mr. Ball began chapel with an organ prelude Our chapel speaker told us about her exciting past. The orchestra led us in worship. Tom explained his need tor God's leading in the future. 60 Please, no more pictures! Mr. Veenstra tries to get his point across. RELIGION In a Christian school, all subjects are taught with the realization that there is a God. We do however, also spend some time specifically on religion courses, where an attempt is made to determine our own personal relationship with God and our purpose here on earth. We study the history and problems of the Church. We study the Reformed beliefs and how they compare with beliefs of other denominations, the cults and of the major world religions. Finally, we study Christian ethics where we examine various ethical standards of the world as they compare with the ideal Christian principles for behavior. Did I ever tell you the story about... 61 2 English — the art of communication English is the biggest area of study in the curriculum at Unity. All four students are required to take four semesters of English including speech, basic literature and basic writing. As Juniors and Seniors students can choose which classes they want to take depending on interest and course of study. Classes ranging from films to drama to Shakespeare are offered. Who could forget: — writing that first term paper — doing book reports — giving the “Who am I” speech Look what English has done tor me!! Mr. Brouwer models his wake up it's Monday! sweater. Mr. Vandenburg smiles at the thought of another assignment. Another exciting English class. 62 STUDYING CREATION The science classes at Unity help students to understand God’s creation better. There is a variety of courses that students may choose from once they have completed one year of Sophomore Biology. Those include Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, and Senior Biology. What a guy You don't say... Now if only I could find my contac lens Now, once you have THAT one figured out 65 C STUDYING THE PAST History is a tool used at Unity to help students better understand the future, the present, and the past. Students at Unity are well prepared for the world after taking history courses offered here at Unity. A big thank-you to our history teachers for sharing the past with us. Mr. Klyn ... US History Mr. Oostindie... US History Mr. Delvoning... US History, Government, Russian History, China History, Middle East European History Watch it now... 66 Are they really doing Psychology? Students gather wisdom from Mr. DeWitt UNDER- STANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOR One of the most interesting courses offered at Unity is Psychology. It is a one semester course for seniors and is taught from a Christian perspective. The aim is for a better understanding of human behavior and body language. The students practice active listening and are involved in many group projects and discussions. Mr. DeWitt uses many different experiments to make the class interesting and also a lot of fun! Nancy's openness causes Bob to blush Judy, Joy and Amy are busy working on their triads. 67 YC MATHEMATICS TACTICS From Algebra to Geometry, and from Sophomore Math to Senior Math, Unity offers students a challenge in their mathematics courses. THE ART OF EXPRESSION “Draw what you see and not what you know” was heard many times this year in Art classes, and the students learned to do just that. Taught by Mrs Karanicola, Art classes learned to express their creativity using different mediums. Many of these class projects are entered in the Fine Arts Week competition at the end of the year. This years Fine Arts theme of ’Create and Celebrate’ could easily describe all of the art classes here at Unity. I'm not sure EXACTLY what it is... Happy Home-Ec Classes The Home Economics classes at Unity offer a variety of skills to both male and female students. Clothing, family living, foods and nutrition, and interior decorating are the courses offered under the supervision of Mrs. Fridsma. Not only are the basic homemaking skills but practical everyday practices are taught. The students enjoy these classes because of the skills learned, the times of fun, and the many new friendships made. Part of the basic clean-up crew It actually worked! The Happy Teacher TEAMWORK!!! 72 “HANDS ON” EXPERIENCE This year in Shop, Mr Hulst aquired new equipment which has been very useful in the projects that students are required to do. Mr Hulst, the Shop teacher, teaches the students the correct way to use the machines, resulting in safety and a finely finished product. The machines can be used in many different ways getting various results. In Shop, they learn how to work with wood and metals. Students have said that the best thing about shop is the “hands on” experience. Shop can be lots of fun and can result in some nice products. GOTCHA! The concert choir is made up of many hard working Unity students who enjoy praising God through singing. While sophomore chorus is training to become members of the concert choir, the concert choir has been showing their talent by performing in the many church services and concerts given throughout the year. Both the concert choir and sophomore chorus are under the direction of Mr. Ball. Chorus is such fun The excited look 555555555555 75 PLAY IT AGAIN Unity’s Concert Band had a great year. The band, led by Mr. Ron Veenstra had a slow start due to his surgery, but Mr. Bob Van Sprange filled in for him for the first nine-week marking period. The band worked extremely hard upon Mr. Veenstra’s return. They played at some of the area churches and prepared for the District Band Festival. All of the hard work on difficult songs paid off when the Concert Band once again received all first division ratings. The band year ended on a positive note with a Pops Concert and marching in two of Holland’s Tulip Time Parades in which the Varsity Band was included. What is that thing? Praise God with the sounding of the trumpet. J Praise Him with the harp and lyre, Praise Him with tambourine and glancing, Praise Him with the strings and flute. Praise Him with the clash of cymbals, Praise Him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. The orchestra has been active in leading church services and school chapel services. They also perform with choir concerts. The orchestra is directed by Mr. Norm Ball and accompanied by Greg Jasperse. Pay attention Shelly Oopsl I hit a wrong note. Mrs. Post helping her students I know my desk is a mess. So what! The demands of high school are much different from the demands of elementary school and junior high. No longer are students simply required to know a few facts and be able to recite this from memory. High school students must be able to synthesize, analyze and apply information, as well as retain information for future use. The Resource Program works to improve these skills by concentrating on the following ideas: Reading: Improving reading comprehension, speed and flexibility is the focus for many students. English: Analyzing the spelling and meaning of the English language helps one to become a proficient learner. Study Skills: How to prepare for a test, to retain the information and understand what the test question is asking of you are topics covers. Organization: Of time and materials is also stressed. Understanding: School is often frustrating. We discuss frustration and try direct frustration towards positive learning. Remembering: Techniques such as “mapping” notes are developed so as to see how small parts of information relate to the bigger parts of information. Thereby helping one to remember the information. Cooperation: Teachers of all subject areas cooperate with R.R. to make school a positive learning experience. Education: Students can also take various classes such as government, English, Math, Basic writing. Each class only consists of a few students so students receive a lot of individual attention. 79 £32 FIT FOR LIFE In Physical Education at Unity, students are exposed to a variety of team and individual sports. Through team sports students learn the rules of each game and also learn about working with others and encouraging others. Through individual sports, students learn a variety of “lifetime” sports — activities which can be continued through all of life. Students are also encouraged to improve their fitness level and continue to live a healthy and active life in the years to come. ■ u-wnuo 880 RELAY MILE RELAY 2 MILE RELAY Mr. Bos poses naturally for the photographer. Thei are classes in the morning and afternoon, and variety of fields are offered too. Classes in Chile Care, Welding, Cosmetology, Dentistry, and many more are available to students. Skill Center helps prepare students for these lines of work, giving them hands-on experience in addition to classroom work. Val LOVES Child Care. You mean we re supposed to FIX this thing? Now you connect this thing-a-ma-jig to the watcha-ma-callit... Yep, I like this! 81 iX ... to the office please. Mrs. Nancy Westrate is Student Services secretary and secretary to Mr. Fondse. The Bookkeeper and Financial secretary is Brian Van Doeselaar. There is also a special member who works as a volunteer, Harold Helder who comes to help out. These people are well appreciated by all at Unity!!! How do you use one of these? Hard at work. The score was 5-1. This qualified Holle Dodde and Jeni Miller for the State Tournament where they scored a 6-2 record in preliminary rounds. Quarterfinals — lost to Calvin Christian. Sixteen members of concert choir were chosen as a group to sing together. This group is made up of juniors and seniors who practiced at least once a week during homeroom. Most of their performances are as special music in various local churches, concerts with the other choirs, and in some of our chapels. This year marks the fifteenth year that Mr Ball has directed the Madrigals for Unity. There are two groups of handbells: The Intermediate group and the Advanced group. The Intermediate group is comprised of sophomores who are members of the sophomore chorus. The Advanced group is made up of juniors and seniors who are members of the concert choir. They each meet once a week during homeroom under the direction of Mr Ball. These groups perform as special music in church services, in some chapels, and as accompaniment for several songs sung by the two choirs. Each of these groups have lots of fun and meet many new friends. Our turn UNITY’S PEP BAND... A HIT! Another year has come and gone in basketball, but during half-times of the games, the pep band has played better than ever. This year, the pep band got a new synthesizer which added new sounds to the sound of the band. A couple of new songs were also added this year, which helped the crowd become more involved in the music, and also made it more fun to play. The two directors, Julie Visser and Dan Voetberg, led them through a great year. GO FLY A KITE The special days committee, a special division of student council sponsored a kite day this spring. On a beautiful, breezy afternoon homeroom study and lunch were combined, and everyone was let loose in the soccer field. Competitions were held in kite flying, limbo, and ultimate frisbee. The hour served as a nice break during those long spring days. The seniors won the ultimate frisbee competition How low can you go? LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE ECO is a way for students to explore what they want to do in the future. On September 5, Unity’s students piled onto 9 school buses, and headed for the beach. THE MIRACLE WORKER The 1986 Fall Play was The Miracle Worker. It is the story of Helen Keller, a girl who was trapped in her handicaps. It was thought to be impossible to release Helen from her fate, but Annie Sullivan came into her life, and Mr. and Mrs. Keller’s fantasy turned into reality. The play cast performed excellently and the audience left with a new respect for the handicapped person. The play was dedicated to Dan Voetberg who was injured in the final week of rehearsal and was not able to perform. Steve Taylor did an excellent job taking over Dan’s role. First of all, thanks to the staff, for putting in many hours of work to get pages done. Thanks also to the photographers for being everywhere with their cameras, and for taking many last-minute pictures so that we could meet deadlines. We’d also like to thank Steve Talsma, our Taylor representative, for being patient with us when our pages were not done on time. The biggest thanks, though, goes to Mr. DeWitt, and especially Miss Vree for supervising our yearbook work and for being our friend through the year. A lot of things happened in the ’86-’87 school year. We were happy, sad, excited, bored, and confused, but we made it, and we grew in love and in life. We hope that this year’s Silhouette ties together your memories, and as you look ahead to the future, you remember Paul’s words in Colossians 3:17. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” PIERSMA’S PHARMACY Clare Piersma, RPh. It is important to realize that no words, no speeches, or no poems will ever perfectly capture what Bob Huizinga was to us, the student body of Unity Christian. The shock at the news of his death affected the entire senior class because Bob was a special person to all of us. Pages could be written about his friendliness and how he treated everyone with a little special attention. We could write about his fierce competitive spirit and his leadership. We all knew Bob as a friend, teammate and classmate, but Bob can’t be explained in so many words because he had a unique relationship with each person. With tears we say goodbye, with nostalgia we look back at the good times we had, and with thankfulness we can be assured that Bob lives in heaven in perfect peace. We love you, Bob. Always a smile, never a frown, Always a hand when someone was down; Happiness you gave to everyone you knew, No better things could anyone do. Your presence brought joy to everyone’s heart, Laughter and cheerfulness right from the start. Just when your life was brightest, Just when your life was best; You were called from this world of sorrow To a home of eternal rest. The blow was hard, the shock severe, We little thought your death so near, And only those who have lost can tell The pain of parting without farewell. Words cannot express his passing — He touched so many lives so naturally and beautifully. He was taken from us so quickly and yet... part of him lives on when we, in some small way, treat those he knew and loved as he would have treated them. As a son and brother we will always grieve his death and look forward to meeting him again where an ever-lasting Light shines. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon us all and give us peace. The peace that he has given eternally to Bob. The Huizinga Family 192 s
