1984 Silhouette Unity Christian High School Hudsonville, Michigan Volume 31 Log Academics Sports Happenings Organizations Sophomores Juniors Seniors Advertising 2 Dedication Dedication This year’s Silhouette is dedicated to a man who always has a smile for everyone. His excitement and happiness has been shown in his attitude towards teaching Spanish for the past 7 years. This year, he also began coaching the girls J.V. basketball team and had a fine year. Thank you for being a Christian inspiration to us all. To you, Mr. Veltkamp, we dedicate our 1984 Silhouette. Dedication 3 Sail through our past days. 4 Introduction 6 Introduction 10 Introduction Introduction 11 Introduction 13 Homecoming Ends in Tie Once again the six days of Homecoming Week were fun and competitive between the three classes. The week ended with a Saturday night game against South Christian; in which the Sailors were defeated and the Class of 1974 was welcomed back. Competition was fierce and turned out to be very close all week. The winner would be determined by the floats. This year’s theme for the floats was Historical Time Periods. The Seniors took first place with their Middle Ages float tying them in competition with the Juniors who took second with their Space Age float. The Sophomores whose float was centered around the Stone Age took third place. Another highlight of the school year sailed by as quickly as it had come and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. 14 Homecoming Homecoming 15 Boards Steer ‘Ship of State ’ The School Board for 1984-85. “Thanks” — School Board of 1983-84. 18 Board of Education Paulette Deboer, our smiling secretary. They have the busy job of keeping track of over 600 students. They do an excellent job and keep our school running smoothly. In our finance office we have three busy people ready to collect tuition money. They are Mrs. Van Zalen, Mr. Helder, and Mr. DeKoning. They are responsible for Unity’s financial obligations. Laurie Pruis Right! I heard that one yesterday. Tic Tac Toe, I won! Office 19 A H rd Job Well Done The job of being janitor at Unity is not very easy. Mr. John Vander Helm does an excellent job of keeping the school clean. He spends time during school hours repairing, doing yard work, and many other tasks that need to be done. John is well known for his humor and friendly advice. He is a good Christian example to all. Linda Feenstra Just about finished. That's the best joke I heard in a long time. John carefully changes the broom head. Look at that floor shine! Not a speck of dirt escapes John. 20 Janitor Mr. Jasperse ponders the chapel message. Daily Chapel Shows Variety Every morning at 8:10, the students head for chapel. Every week we have a different time. The chapel committee works hard to present these themes in many different and interesting ways. On some Fridays the students go to homeroom devotion. During this time they reflect on what they learned. Has marriage aged Mr. Roels? Pam Klyn listens attentively to the chapel speaker? Students listen carefully to the speaker. 22 23 Mr. Roever captivates the students with his experience. Required Courses Pace Learning Students at Unity are required to take three semesters of Religion. As Sophomores they study Church History, where they learn the foundations of Christianity. As Juniors they study Reformed Doctrine, which teaches the difference between our doctrine and that of other religions. Last of all, as Seniors, they take Christian Ethics, where they learn how to apply Christianity to every part of their lives. “Don't ask me questions I can't answer. 24 Bible Mr. Tenharmsel prepares another worksheet. Mr. Veenstra always ready to give away a smile. Bible 25 Good books interest Mr. Vandenberg. Say It Better Unity offers many different English classes. All students are required to take speech, basic literature, and basic writing as sophomores. As juniors and seniors they can choose anything from films to pre-college grammar. This allows the students to follow their own interests. A teacher hard at work. Mr. Voetberg would rather be sailing. Keeping your mouth covered and speaking good English can be quite a trick. Mr. Vandenberg uses filmstrips to interest the class. English 27 Important! Know Your History A knowledge of one’s background always helps with the future. This is just what our history classes try to accomplish. Not only is history of the United States offered but also of the Eastern World. Geers giggles about government. I've got to get that bug. History 29 Outlook on Other Cultures Don't push Itl A smiley Spanish teacher. Languages 31 Form ula. for the Future What would school be without its math courses? From Geometry and Algebra to Senior Calculus; from Math to Non-College Math the problems are designed to prepare each student for the future and much self accomplishment. John do his homework? No wayl Mr. Flietra checks a homework assignment Math 33 Alaska is number one. 34 Science This class just went over our heads! Mr. Heiffer contemplates a problem. Mr. Hulst helps Steve find an organ on the pig! m % This ought to finish him off. I don't believe I'm doing this I'd say he's about 6 lbs. Experiment With Science Through science students are given the chance to study and learn about God’s creation. Unity has many different science courses. Sophomores take biology, where they first encounter dissection of a fetal pig. As Juniors and Seniors students may choose from courses like chemistry, earth science, electronics, physics, computers, or senior biology. What ever they choose they have a good time as well as learn a lot. Mr. Sikema demonstrates a chemistry experiment. Julie prepares to go to work on her rabbit. Someone gave Mr. Huizinga laughing gas? I don't feel like computers today. Science 35 I Mr. VanderLugt explains to Mr. Boogaart the joys of teaching typing. Practice Prepares Practical Personnel Students with an interest in the business world can begin to prepare themselves already in high school. Unity offers typing, accounting, shorthand, consumers’ education, computers, and office practice to help these students get a start. Many students who aren’t interested in business also find these courses beneficial for their personal needs. Wearing a black hat raises your WPM by 10 or 12. Business 37 Points on Life Psychology class was a class of many learnings in communication and self-improvement. In this class, which is taught by Mr. DeWitt, one must work for their grade by collecting points. Points are collected through writing book reports, film reports, doing small group work, and volunteering during an experiment. Much is taught and learned about life in this class. That makes it a very worthwhile class to take. Amy Burmania Mr. DeWitt listens carefully to a student's question. You’ve got to be kidding! Scholars are intent on their work. 38 Psychology Busy Hands Complement Brains For the students who enjoy working with their hands or reading blueprints, Unity offers shop and mechanical drawing. In mechanical drawing students learn to draw blueprints of machines, homes and other buildings. Shop class is where the students learn to read blueprints and from them make a product. Both classes give students a pride in their own accomplishments. Mr. Boogaart advises a stuaem. t Hurry, so we can get to shop! Shop 39 Building Strong Bodies Unity not only emphasizes the importance of strong able minds. It also emphasizes the importance of strong healthy bodies. It does this by requiring sophomores and juniors to take two semesters of Physical Education. During this time they learn how to play many different sports as well as working on conditioning their bodies. Nine weeks of Physiology are also required of all Unity students. In that nine weeks they are taught why it is important to have a healthy body and how the body works. I Won! 40 Physical Education The redwood forest takes over the art room. Artists at Work Everyday talented students gather in the art room to develop their skills. With the assistance of Mr. Roels they mold clay, paint pictures, do paper mache, draw pictures, and many other projects. During Fine Arts week they are given a chance to display their talents. Kim Brouwer concentrates on her painting. Lisa De Jong gives Pam a makeover. What did you do now? Art 41 Future Homemakers Home Economics classes at Unity give the students a chance to learn skills in sewing, food management, and room designing. Under the direction of Mrs. Simons, the students learn to develop their talents in these areas. An original creation by Tina. Help mel What can I say? Future homemaker of America. Look ma 42 Mike Oostindie awaits the performance. Miss Vandenberg, the director. Volunteers Keep Orchestra. Going Every Monday during homeroom the sounds of orchestra filled the halls near the band room. Miss Vandenberg and several students volunteered their time to try to keep orchestra going at Unity. Even without a regular class period every day for rehearsal, the orchestra still did very well. They performed at several local churches and gave a concert. The orchestra performs at Messiah CRC. Practice before the performance. Orchestra 43 Practice Brings Perfection The Unity Concert Choir, under the careful direction of Mr. Ball, has again been a success. Every day a class period is spent in careful practice. The pieces are done over and over until perfection is reached and the piece is ready to be performed. This year the choir performed for local schools and churches, in addition to their Christmas and Spring concerts. Fifteen of the finest voices from the choir joined together to form the Madrigals. They practiced very hard once a week to prepare for singing in churches and various other concerts. These included one with the Quinte Christian High Concert Choir from Canada. Unity took second place in the West Shore Soccer League after losing the season in an exhaustive duel with Holland Christian. The Saders finally lost in the fourth overtime 5 to 4, making the final record 12-4-2. Thanks to an outstanding defense Unity allowed the lowest number of goals in the WSSL (12). The team also recorded an impressive seven shutouts of opponents. Offensively the Saders outscored their opponents by a total of 27 goals. Junior Dan Toonstra secured lead scoring honors. Tribute must be paid to rookie coach Walt Van Wyngarden whose intensive ball handling emphasis made a winning season possible. Then before two capacity crowds of faithful Unity fans, the team took the District Championship in hard fought, come from behind victories against Zeeland and Hudsonville. Mike Van Diepenbos goes for the return. This year’s Tennis team was a fairly young and inexperienced team, and this showed to be the major factor in the close losses that we faced. Although we finished the year under .500, at least three matches could have gone our way with one more victory in each match. The strongest showing the team made this year was at the Holland Christian Invitational. 1st singles finished 2nd, while 2nd, 3rd, and 4th singles all took 3rd place to lead the team to a 3rd place finish. For the first time ever Unity place second at the Regional meet in Fremont. Unity also excelled in the two relay invitationals at West Ottawa and Wyoming Park taking a third place finish at both out of an average of fifteen schools. Once again reaching a milestone in Unity’s history, 1984 sent eleven boys to the state meet in Caro, Michigan. Todd Stuive placed 2nd in the 800m run and the mile relay team took a 4th place. Silhouette Party 87 ‘David and Lisa ’ “David and Lisa” was an enjoyable experience and one that we will not soon forget. “David and Lisa” helped us to really see the characters and understand their illness. We learned to respect them and their struggles and of course, their triumphs. As actors and actresses we had to overcome fears of portraying our characters because we thought we might reveal them differently than the playwright wanted. But with the able directorship of Mrs. A. Laninga, who helped us to interpret our characters with sensitivity, we overcame our fears. Performances were the most exciting and what we had worked so hard for. We were successful in glorifying God’s name in a job weM done and making friendships with'fhe cast and crew. “David and Lisa” was a growing experience and makes a wonderful memory. The musical was performed on 3 nights this year to accommodate the many people who wished to see this year’s musical. The play opens with much tension between the nuns of the Abbey and Maria. Convinced that it would be best if Maria left the Abbey until she could resolve her feelings of life, the Mother Abbess sends her off to be governess for the von Trapp family. It is here in this house that Maria eventually discovers another type of love, also given from God. In making this discovery Maria develops many very special relationships and has a few comical experiences. Mr. Ball put much time and effort trying to make this show alive and his efforts paid off. And we would do it all again, all the joys and all the pain; because we had friends. And every day was something new, we fell in love and didn’t quite know what to do. And one day we’ll feel like we never have been here. One day when we’re traveling down some dusty road of unfamiliar highway. Tomorrow we will go our separate ways. So I wish for you the best my friend, with hopes that we shall meet again. 160 Senior Candids 163 H Congratulations to the Class of 1984 LARRY HOEZEE 791-0110 Office 669-1449 Home Personalized Real Estate Service Phone: 669-1750 HUDSONVILLE FLORAL GIFT “Flowers and Gifts of Distinction” 3497 Kelly Street Hudsonville, Michigan 49426 m Spinnaker DOCK SIDE CONDOMINIUMS 5501 40th Avenue Hudsonville, Michigan 49426 Phone (616) 669-1810 H. Our three years of high school seem to have flown by but the years are filled with so many memories. In the yearbook, we as a staff have tried to collect these memories to last us a lifetime. We as Co-Editors would like to take this space to thank the staff and our photographers for sticking with it and working hard. We would also like to thank Mr. Jasperse, our advisor for his wisdom and Mr. Flietstra for his fine picture taking ability. A big thanks to Lisa DeJong for her fine art work on the divider pages!! Through Unity we have made good friends and become closer with our classmates, teachers and especially God. Our high school memories will carry us into our lives and never will they fade.
