The Seniors won Homecoming for the second yeor in o row, even ofter placing second with their floor. The Wizard of Oz. I appreciate the extra efforts of the teachers, being understanding towards me, for I learned a lor from them, even though they gave me a lot of assignments. Unify meons o lot to me, besides being fond of the '83 doss. I'm thankful to graduate from o Christian school. I hove found some friends that mode my year or Unity great. My country is o lot different from the United States, bur it would be even nicer if some of you will get on opportunity to visit in the Philippines. I would gladly show you my country. 30 Remember ... the firsr day of high school and how big everything seemed? ... our firsr Homecoming and our Fruit Loop float? ... how we hoped that school would close because of o mumps epidemic? ... how it seemed like winter always come during Spring Vocation? ... when E.T. desperately wonted to go home, bur stoyed here for so long? ... when o few Seniors took o wrong turn ond ended up in Fort Wayne, Indiana instead of Flint, Michigan? ... when video gomes invaded our spare time? ... the good time we hod on our Class Trip? ... working hard to get our of exoms? ... never winning the floor competition but still winning Homecoming two years in o row? ... the crazy times we hod? ... the mole cheerleaders ond their cure knees? ... John De Vries spoke on our class verse, Philippians 3:14. He explained that each of us must have the goal of serving Christ in whatever we do. Groduorion 37 Activities 36 Homecoming — No Ordinary Week It's 1125 o.m. Teachers, do you know where your students ore? During on ordinary week, onswers to that question might hove been: Jerry’s or In the halls or, on rare occasions, homeroom . But this was no ordinary week. It wos Homecoming 1983 ond oil roods led to the new gym. Unity's three dosses locked horns in Student Council sponsored gomes ond fried to out-do eoch other in several special dress up days. The competition wos dossy. The dosses fought hard for first (how about those sophomores!) but didn’t count supremacy o thing to be grasped at the expense of Christian sportsmanship. In the end it proved to be one of the finest Homecoming competitions ever ond o fine reflection on our school. V I Hotdogs, Sand and Water At the end of the firsr week of school, the students went to runnel pork to get some sun. However, rhor is nor oil they got. After getting o bite to eor. reochers ond students were swept off their feet to enjoy o plunge in Loke Michigan. The water, however, wos nor the only source of fun for the doy, sand fights creored another diversion. Great Year Relived The Silhouette party once again brought together students from the 1981-82 school year to reminisce over the post. While recoiling the high moments of the year students and teachers autographed eoch other’s books. The 1982 Silhouette was dedicated to Mr. William VonderVliet, our former principal of nineteen years. A good time hod by oil. Hey look it s me!!! It was wirh uncertainty that a fall play was discussed because there was no faculty member to direct it. Then it was brought to our attention rhot possibly Mrs. Audrey laningo. a former Unity teacher, would be a possibility. When she consented to do the job, it was under her able, precise, and organized direction, rhot Ten Little Indians was under way. This who-done-ir ploy takes place or o resort on on islond off the coast of Devon, England where ten individuals ore vacationing. An unknown host invited these guests to his house for various reasons. The guests seemed only to hove one thing in common: they were oil, or one point in their lives, suspected of murder and acquitted The suspense mounts os death is anticipated by each guest according to the poem Ten Little Indian Boys . Everybody is suspicious of everybody else. One or o time they ore eliminated os one or o time the Indian figurines come rumbling down off the mantle piece. The actors were able to build the suspense so well that at rimes you could hear o pin drop in the audience os everyone was trying to come up with the name of the murderer. It wasn’t until the lost moment of the lost act rhot the mystery wos solved and the guilty one came forward in o stunning scene. The ploy could not hove succeeded without the generous guidance given by Mrs. Loningo ond the help of the student, assistant director Kathy Steenstro. Foil Ploy 47 Concert Choir Stages 'Fiddler' As shoky os a fiddler on rhe roof, ond thus commenced 1983 s musical Fiddler on rhe Roof . Joseph Stein s classic musical documents rhe lives of Tevye ond his Jewish neighbors in rhe Russian village of Anoreuko. Tevye ond his village comrades must come ro grips with rhe changing expectations of rhe younger generation, especially toward marriage. Three pesky Russians, however, do their Bolshevik best ro horass rhe Jewish community ond eventually the close-knit village is freed ro leove and start a new life in distant lands. Concert choir director Mr. Boll indeed had ro perfect both rhe music and dialogue aspects of the production, a task made all the more difficult by staging Fiddler on o homemade set in the south gym. Many Forensics students received owords or the owords assembly Unify did very well in Forensics this year. Mony Mondoy nights this winter were spent broving the chilly weother ond the slopes. After mid-exams were finished, the Ski Club traveled to Crystal Mountain. Crystal In the post few years, the Kilometer Club has been growing steadily. This yeor, mony students received T-shirfs for reaching set goals by running during the summer or the winter. Lifting weights has also become popular ond mony noticed much improvement in other sports. Mountain provided better skiing conditions ond o fun-filled overnight stay. Mexico City, Toxco, and Acapulco. After this exciting trip we had a couple reunions to share some slides and photographs. During the schoolyeor new Spanish Club members kept busy selling pizzas, candy bars and fruit in order to raise money for a trip to Spain next year. Also Dragonslayer” ond Alien which were viewed on o lorge 5 by 4 videotape screen. We remember the start of the yeor with the mixer, o trip to Stratford, Ten Little Indians, ond o thrilling store soccer gome. Although the winter did nor bring much snow, it brought much excitement. Homecoming wos o real thriller; especially in the floor competition. The floors were the best Unity has ever seen. Much to the surprise of oil, the sophomores stayed close to the seniors to the very end, but the class of 83 hung rough ond won for the second yeor in o row. There were mony exciting basketball gomes filled with the sounds of l on Riensrro ond the sensational Pep Bond, not to mention o ski trip to Crystal Mountain, ond the musical, Fiddler On The Poof. The pace quickened or springtime os five sports opened their season. Not only did the athletes keep busy, bur those involved in Fine Arts also hod their hands full, with the All-Student Ploy, Jabberwock,” the spring concerts, both bond ond choir, ond Fine Arts Week.
