Changes improve campuses United Township can be called The Land of Many Changes this year with the numerous preventive maintenance and modernization projects throughout the school. A new computer lab at north campus, equipped with 30 TRS-80 computers, was installed to help improve the math skills of all north campus students. The home economics room at north campus was completely remodeled, receiving a new floor, new walls, teak-wood cabinets, tormica countertops, and a new pantry. One working unit was built to accommodate handicapped students. Poor piping in the floor initially brought about the remodeling. Mrs. Willie Newenham, home economics teacher, enthusiastically praised the project, I just think it's fantastic that our school board saw fit to do this for us. Both north and south campus' parking lots were resurfaced. The aisle direction was changed to get cars in and out in a safer manner. according to Mr. Lawrence Dussliere, business manager. The north campus tennis courts were renovated due to water gain which had caused puddles and cracks. The courts are now good enough for the pros to play on, said Miss Sue Uranich, physical education teacher and assistant tennis coach. A new school flag was designed by Michelle Glenn, senior. The chimney was reinforced, and new energy-conserving windows were installed at north campus. The special education room was moved and completely remodeled, and the audiovisual room was also relocated. Many roofs were repaired at both campuses, and the bus garage roof was replaced. Soule Bowl is ready for action Panther pride is really showing and with good reason. The newly renovated Soule Bowl has a new look for this school year. Mr. Gene McCarter, director of athletics, stated, We have one of the finest facilities of any high school in the state of Illinois ' In the spring of 1980, the Fred Peterson Contraction Company began work on the extensive renovations and continued through the fall of this school year. The total cost reached an estimated sum of $1.3 million. The various changes included the replacing of the entire visitors' side of the stadium. The entire hill was removed and a permanent grandstand was constructed. Beneath the visitors' side bleachers are the new locker rooms. Both locker rooms are enclosed in one continuous building which also contains the boiler 1. Doug Cooper, senior, intensely watches the home-opener from the sidelines. 2. The Panthers explode through the paper ring before the start of the game. 3. Scott Fisher, senior, finds plenty of open field as he sprints wide. 4. The score-board shows the heartbreaking final score. 5. These two players help each other stretch before the game. 6. After more than a year of empty stands, Soule Bowl is filled to near-capacity. and heating facilites. A new, six-lane, all-weather, 400-meter track was also added to the bowl to replace the inadequate cinder track. Also, new areas have been provided for track events, such as the long jump and the pole vault. The bowl required a totally new drainage system. Stone gabions were also constructed to restrain the hill and support the original stone wall. Other renovations on the bowl included the replacing of the first two sections of bleachers on the home side and the removal of the wooden benches.
