Classes encourage critical thinking Three new courses are available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, to enhance critical thinking abilities. The courses are taught by two teachers, one from the English department and one from the social studies department. The sophomore class, World Studies, is conducted by Mr. Hanske and Mrs. Catton. American Studies, taught by Mr. Belan and Mr. Manwaring, is available for the juniors. Western Civilization is designed for the seniors. Mrs. Keeley and Mr. Wagle teach this course. The programs last two hours of the day, fulfilling the English and history requirements. These courses consist of college preparatory English and history students who were selected by the social studies department chairman. The courses are open to anyone who demonstrates interest in these classes. Recommendation by Mr. Belan and Mr. Petcrhoff is necessary to become involved in these programs. These classes build critical thinking skills for students and give them the opportunity to come in contact with different kinds of readings and visual aides that the accelerated students should become familiar with. KIM BURTON JOHN LARSON UT is the only school that offers students the opportunity of taking classes in sequence which build on each other throughout their three years of high school. Mr. Poulter commented, We are attempting to make use of this material and trying to build critical thinking skills for the students at the same time as to present them with the culture of their surroundings. Those are the two main objectives which make our new curriculum program unique ' 1. Caroline Niebres asks for help in Western Civilization. 2. American Studies students are often involved in group discussions. 3. Mr. Hanske leads sophomores in a discussion in the World Studies class. 4. Mrs. Keeley listens to a member of the class. 5. Mrs. Catton listens in on a group discussion in World Studies. 6. Luis Moreno can't understand why he has to read his assignment. 8 — Opening
