A. and the teachers’ tables in the cafeteria . . . Because this is United Township High School, the place where all of us do a lot of living; where many people grow in friendships that last throughout life; where those who work achieve success; where people thrill with victory and come to accept defeat with dignity — Because this is a place where ideals are formed or strengthened and refined; where all learn to follow the same rules and come to see that everyone is entitled to an equal chance; where the dignity of each personality is recognized and held inviolate — Because our lives here are formed into a pattern that serves as a constant challenge to each one to do his best, to strive for his own success and for the good of all — Because our hopes and ambitions, our pleasures and happiness originate here; many of our future’s fond remembrances will be centered here; and our deepest loyalties are rooted here — Because this is our life; because it is what we made it; because we are each a part of it; because together we are the United Township High School — We like it here. HOMECOMING Mary Ann Thompson and Steve Perry, Miss and Mr. U. T. H. S., reigned over 1955 Homecoming celebrations with crowns and sceptors, symbols of high esteem and majesty. Mary Ann and Steve were crowned at an impressive ceremony by Sue Anderson and Bill Dailey, runners-up. Serving the royal pair as Crown Bearers were Marilyn Moore and Joe Weinert. The Royalty and their Court were honored with a program featuring an acrobatic team and soloist Rosa Thompson. Posing in front of the flower covered arches through which they entered are the Royalty. Seated in front center are King Steve Perry and Queen Mary Ann Thompson. Sitting on either side of the King and Queen- left to right are Vera McRae and Linda Gooding; Marilyn Moore and Joe Weinert; Judy Sorenson and Joyce Turner. Standing left to right are Gary Hoff, Garmon Mest, Ted Stang, and Mary Kastner; Bill Dailey and Sue Anderson; Fred Sandoval and Jim Willaert. One of our memories will be that dreary, damp day which turned into a perfect starlit evening highlighting the annual parade of floats led through the downtown area by royalty in convertibles. Climaxing Thursday’s festivities were the bonfire and cheers with school spirit and tradition. After the exciting moment when the queen and king of sports were announced, the royalty relaxed and shared Queen Mary’s and King Carmon’s bewildered happiness. Girls left to right are Vera McRae, Barbara Kipp, Sheryl Smith, Jeannie Dailey, Marie Esposito, Mary Kastner, Mary Ann Thompson, Nancy Little, Connie Jackson, and Sue Anderson. Boys from left to right are Fred Sandoval, Steve Perry, Ted Stang, Pete Huber, Carmon Mest, Arvid Herstedt, Richard Randolph, Chuck Morrison, Dave Johnson, and Larry Vallejo. 76 6. A. A. ROYALTY 6. A. A. KING, QUEEN AND ATTENDANTS Runners-up Marie Esposito and Arvid Herstedt graciously crowned Queen Mary and King Garmon — Mary and Garmon found that the crowns fit perfectly. 77 A highlight of the special assemblies was Don Sweet and his guest who held our attention with their magic antics. We'll all remember the exchange assembly with Rock Island when this hoys’ quartet had us rocking in our seats and tapping our feet. “Does it smell good, Lo-rena?” Another special assembly — more interesting people to remember. ASSEMBLIES Seven little angels appeared on the sophomore assembly to croon a heavenly tune. Left to right are Helen Rivers, Susan Kelly, Roxanne York, Marilyn Cushman, Lois Mc-Creight, Bonnie Wilkens, and Sandra Kali- man. 78 “Working backstage on the play proiluc-tions were Tom Wares and Leo Combes. WORK, THRILLS... HONORS ‘HELLO OUT THERE' Twelve weeks were spent on the production of the contest play, Saroyan’s “Hello Out There.” Although this play is not usually given by high school dramatists, the cast perfected it in a mature manner and placed second at district and second at sectional. With these placings, the cast practiced even harder before tackling tough competition at state. Unfortunately, nothing was accomplished with the play at state, but due credit must be given to the following: Jim Willaert, Sharon Wagoner, Sandra Dunning, Gary Pinkerton, Tom Wares, and Roy Miller. LO AND BEHOLD The first play of the year, “Lo and Behold,” proved warmly entertaining. The witty dialogue held the audience in gay spirits. I aking a check on dress rehearsal night is the cast for “Lo and Behold.” Left lo right are: Cary Pinkerton, Monica Greder, Tom Wares. Sandra Dunning, Judy Abbott, Dean Cresswel], Tom Dunning, and Jack Keenan. JOHN W. STEVENS PRESENTS Lo and behold! What goes on here? A perfect ending to the delightful comedy presented November 10 on the LTHS stage. 80 “DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY Bringing tense drama to the UTHS stage, the Thespians dove into Alberto Casella’s “Death Takes A Holiday” and with hopes of giving the tremendous story the feeling it carries. With Jim Willaert handling the part of “Death” superbly, and the fascinating scenery, the play was another attribute to our dramatic department. “Look deep into my eyes — what do you see?” A dropping pin could have been heard in the UTHS auditorium the night that “Death” took a holiday. The above scene was one of several that held the audience in anxiety. “I’m feeling young again!” said the Baron played by Tom Dunning in the play, “Death Takes a Holiday.” Chuckling over his vitality are Sandra Dunning as Alda and Sharon Wagoner as Princess. 81 A familiar scene on Friday afternoons was that of the students decorating in readiness for the evening dance. Bedecked with bells on their toes and a variety of other ornaments are the three girls who won prizes at the “Holly Sock Hop.” Left to right are Yvonne Cornell, Zoerelda Stout, and Stormy Gober. Shown above are members of our F.D.A. and guests from other clubs as they discuss projects and activities. “How did that one turn out?” Looking over a picture for Skyline in the dark room are Margie Krajnovich, Joyce Ickes, and Bill Van Vliete. After weeks of intramural contests, the “Hillbillies” emerged as the champions. Shown above are, front row: Elwin Brayman and Phil Zumaris; back row: Don McNally, Roy Perry, and Rupert Turner. Watch the ball! A different kind of excitement swept through the school when the faculty met with the intramural team for a thrilling game. Half time and time to cool off! Faculty and students share fun at the after-school event. What darling outfits! To help boost the spirits of the intramural team, these boys appeared and provided hilarity as well as cheers. We like it here because . . . illegal coke sessions in the KEY staff room, the Advisory Board’s signs and slogans for the clean-up campaign, a “butterflies” feeling before speech contests, the mad rush when the SKYLINE arrives . . . Student Advisory Board officers shown in Miss Fehrman’s office were, sitting: Roy Miller, parliamentarian ; Linda Gooding, secretary. Standing: M iss Claribel Fehrman, advisor; Helen Tsakan-ikas, vice-president, and Bill Dailey, president. ADVISORY BOARD Active and working always for the students was the Student Advisory Board. This year’s 47 members of the Advisory Board worked for better accomplishments in the school. Our Board is a member of the Quint-City Student Council, the Pekin District Illinois Association, Illinois Association of Student Councils, and a member of the National Association of Student Councils. Some of their projects were assisting new students the first day of school, preparing for homecoming activities, sponsoring a dance, the clean-up campaign, and the initial monitor system. The Quint City student council delegates were Roy Miller, Sandra Sommers, Helen Tsakanikas, and Bill Dailey. Also a delegate, but absent at the time, was Jim Willaert. 86 The members of the Advisory Board are, seated left to right. Front Row: Myrna Canfield, Carol Schweitzer, Ronnie Culp Don Fisher. Very ably handling music of a professional calibre, the choir performed under Mr. Laddie Barron and assistant, Mr. Mallie Williams. Programs were given for Armistice Day assembly, Vesper Concert at Christmas time, WOC TV SHOW, Rock Island County Teacher’s Institute, Baccalaureate, and graduation. The group experienced a thrilling moment when they sang with the Tri-City Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Pierre Belugi in presenting a Family Folk Song Concert, with Mr. Milt Okum, folk singer of New York. MR. ROY SMALL THE KEY Favorite events in our daily school life were the days our newspaper, the KEY, came out. Some students liked the “keyhole,” others liked the sports section, and others enjoyed reading news of recent events; but the KEY always provided variation for all the students. Besides presenting a specific picture of our school and its activities, the KEY gave journalistic experiences to the staff. The KEY staff sponsored a fall dance, “The Autumn Ball,” co-sponsored the “Spinerama” assembly with the SKYLINE, and co-sponsored the Spring Carnival with BiO-Chemics. The Panthers finished with a four and five record. Jour of the five losses being to Quad-City foes and the other to a strong East Aurora team. Among the defeated were Kewanee, Galesburg, Canton and Quincy. Steve Perry was chosen honorary captain of the year by the team. Although used to chalking up a winning season, no one will complain at the fine job Coach Kivisto and his boys did during the 55-56 season. The Hilltoppers wound up with winning in less than half of its games, 12 of 25, and even though it was next to the poorest season which Kivisto has ever had as a coach, we feel the Panthers gave the fans, opponents and themselves the best they were capable of giving. East Moline finished fourth in the Northwest with a 4-6 record and brought up the Quad-City loop rear with 1-5. Carmon Mest, honorary captain, was undoubtedly the sparkplug in all departments for the Orange and Black. The 6-1 star was top scorer this year with 318 points in 25 games for a 12.7 average. Carmon’s 108 free throws in 141 attempts for a 76% average gave him a repeat presentation of the Ray Holmes Free Throw Trophy. Rich Randolph was selected most valuable and he chipped in 196 points for the season. Gary Dobereiner, junior, netted 229 markers on 76 field goals and 77 free throws. Del Carr, junior, held the best field goal average. Del added 196 points for the season and hit on 55 goals out of 120 for a neat 46%. Pete Huber hit for 43% and along with Ted Stang were voted most improved. 136 East Moline finished the season as the top defensive team in the Quad Cities with a 51.9 point per game allowance to twenty five foes. The Panthers also took the free throw crown by hitting a brilliant 70%. 442 out of 627. In field shooting, East Moline hit on 504 goals out of 128, attempts for 39%.
