 A SAD(DLE) STORY” It was always the same routine at school — classes, cafeteria, and then, more classes. My evening schedule was a little different, however. Sometimes I would be kicked off as my mistress watched a small screen with moving objects on it. Other'times I would be placed beneath a table while my mistress did her schoolwork. Once a week I really got a workout, though. On Fridays, after the games, my mistress went to the school dances. Such torture it was for me! Most of the time I would be stepped on, kicked at, and shoved ofm.nd, until the pain was almost unbearable. Ozzie Oxford was always right there beside me, though, and we tried to comfort each other as much as possible while our master and mistress laughed and talked. Little did they realize the suffering we went through for them! The best part of the day for me is when the evening hours chime, and my mistress places me under her bed for the night. My long hours of work are over, and I can rest at last—-that is, until the shrill blasts of the alarm clock break the spell. - - - . M Steppin’ High” In a matter of minutes my mistress and I were off to school. Upon entering the building, I was greeted by a familiar sight — Ozzie Oxford. It was plain to see that Ozzie's master didn't give him the care that I got. His face was scuffed up and dirty, and his tongue was hanging out. The poor fellow was gasping for air. As my mistress and Ozzie's master stood there talking, I did my best to comfort him. The school bell rang. I bade goodbye to Ozzie and was dragged to a classroom for temporary relief as my mistress sat down for the first hour of school. After three hours consumed in the monotonous routine of trudging to different classrooms, I was forced to travel up three flights of stairs to the cafeteria, where my mistress ate her lunch. The stillness of the night was broken sharply by a piercing cry of an alarm clock. 1 realized that my minutes were numbered - that soon I, Sara Saddle, would be placed on the feet of my mistress and carried about during her waking hours. I could hear her as she brushed her teeth and washed her face. Slowly she walked toward me. I cringed in fear, but I could not move; 1 realized that 1 must be brave and face the fate like a shoe. She picked me up, and slipped her cold feet into the very sole of me. I resigned myself to my fate — perhaps if I did my job well, I would be rewarded with a brand new shine that night.
