We, the 1952 Skyline Staff, wish to dedicate our book to the shoes which have carried us through the halls of our high school during the past year. Introducing the 1952............ Zkc Skyline The Skyline United Township High School East Moline, Illinois 1952 of U VMS TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration Classes Activities Athletics Administration Superintendent’s Message Tramp! tramp! shuffle! patter! Down the hallways go hundreds of moving shoes. Day in and day out, week in and week out, year after year they can be seen and heard going in all directions. What do they represent? The old spiritual says: “All God’s children got shoes.” It must be true for all these shoes are the property of God's children — the youth, the life, the light and hope of a community. And God certainly has a lot of different kinds of children! Where are they all going? Those that are the property of the serious minded are going to activities that will prepare them for their places in life. They are on the way to learn to work, to play, to take responsibility. Those with the slow moving hesitant steps perhaps belong to the younger people or the careless or those without purpose — yet. But soon they will see their goals and move steadily forward toward them. What an inspiring privilege to be able to have a part in guiding all these shoe-clad feet into purposeful and worthwhile activity! What a privilege to have spent four years in the classrooms, the study halls, the library, the corridors among the many different personalities that are represented by these hundreds of shoes — among the various nationalities, with the rich and the poor, the highly intelligent, and the plodder. What a privilege to have lived with such people for four years and to have had the opportunity of carving out for oneself a niche in the social life of such a group. Each member of the senior class has had that opportunity and has made a place for himself, a place that is representative of his own ambitions and ideals and abilities. The seniors this year have made their contributions to the spirit and tradition of the school. It has been a grand contribution. May those that follow be able to worthily fill their shoes in the years ahead. L. O. Dawson DEANS Pictured above are: Miss Claribel Fehrman, Dean of Girls, A. B., M. A Arlene ScKutte School 'Treasurer Qy KlrS]DHaz'l Ry“n ------- Our faculty is an intregal part of our organization, and I have been with them cont.nuously. I have known then problems and complaints, as well as their'.nt.mate joys and triumphs. I have become accustomed to their nervous little mannerisms and sometimes even bear the brunt of their anger. I have been tapped rhythmically against the floor, pounded rapidly down the corridor, and occasionally, in a quieter moment, rested discreetly under a chair. Since 1936, 1 have walked with Mr. L. E. Wright through the corridors of UTHS, and I was one of the first to know of the planned seventy-fifth birthday celebration. Yes, I have known them all. But come with me now as I journey through the next few pages, refreshing my mental image of each familiar face. Signed, • . . . “A Shoe” COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT Mary Bruc er, B. S. My evening schedule was a little different, however. Sometimes I would be kicked off as my mistress watched a small screen with moving objects on it. Other'times I would be placed beneath a table while my mistress did her schoolwork. Once a week I really got a workout, though. On Fridays, after the games, my mistress went to the school dances. Such torture it was for me! Most of the time I would be stepped on, kicked at, and shoved ofm.nd, until the pain was almost unbearable. Ozzie Oxford was always right there beside me, though, and we tried to comfort each other as much as possible while our master and mistress laughed and talked. Little did they realize the suffering we went through for them! The best part of the day for me is when the evening hours chime, and my mistress places me under her bed for the night. My long hours of work are over, and I can rest at last—-that is, until the shrill blasts of the alarm clock break the spell. - - - . M Steppin’ High” In a matter of minutes my mistress and I were off to school. Upon entering the building, I was greeted by a familiar sight — Ozzie Oxford. It was plain to see that Ozzie's master didn't give him the care that I got. His face was scuffed up and dirty, and his tongue was hanging out. The poor fellow was gasping for air. As my mistress and Ozzie's master stood there talking, I did my best to comfort him. The school bell rang. I bade goodbye to Ozzie and was dragged to a classroom for temporary relief as my mistress sat down for the first hour of school. After three hours consumed in the monotonous routine of trudging to different classrooms, I was forced to travel up three flights of stairs to the cafeteria, where my mistress ate her lunch. The stillness of the night was broken sharply by a piercing cry of an alarm clock. 1 realized that my minutes were numbered - that soon I, Sara Saddle, would be placed on the feet of my mistress and carried about during her waking hours. I could hear her as she brushed her teeth and washed her face. Slowly she walked toward me. I cringed in fear, but I could not move; 1 realized that 1 must be brave and face the fate like a shoe. She picked me up, and slipped her cold feet into the very sole of me. I resigned myself to my fate — perhaps if I did my job well, I would be rewarded with a brand new shine that night. Now that their high school shoes have made the final step, the seniors are ready to take their knowledge with them and travel other pathways to success. Some will go to college; some will enter the business world; many will enter the armed services; while still others will enter the field Of matrimony. The seniors have had a worthwhile and spirited high school career, and in years to come can reflect on their many achievements. The Junior-Senior Prom, the Senior Ball, Baccalaureate, and Graduation will remain in the minds of the seniors as precious memories of days spent in and about their alma mater on the hilltop. JUNIORS TRAILING THE RAILING' Serving as officers of the Junior Class art Ronnie Troian, president, Ruthie Brittenham, vice-president, and Peter Economous, secretary. u ing a ong with a slightly irregular, but firm step, the juniors arc preparing themselves to take on the duties which will be bestowed upon them as they fill the shoes of their senior friends next year. These future leaders of our school have proven by their achievements that they are ready, willing, and eager to meet with enthusiasm any problem which they may encounter. As the year progresses their ability will lengthen along with their stride. By spring the juniors -will have already shown their worth by having one of the outstanding members of their class elected to head the school Advisory Board. The slightly irregular gait which was typical of their inexperience at the first of the year has become a steady pace as they start assuming the responsibility of school leadership. 38 Row I: Betty Baney. Building future members in the world of business is the purpose of the Business Club. The membership consists of juniors and seniors enrolled in business courses. The programs of the organization usually bring to the members a better understanding of modern office methods and enlighten them on the require' ments they must meet to succeed in their preferred careers. One of the projects of the club this year was buying an arm chair for the new business office. February brought lighter moments to the clubs yearly program as the members sponsored a leap year dance in which the girls asked the boys. Needless to say the affair was a huge success, proving that even in the business world it is not all work and no play. Row 1: Janice Valentine, Dixie Mann. Barbara Brown, Bill Woods.
