Every class member who has been influenced by Mr. Wright’s counsel and friendship truly feels that he is doing as remarkable a job for his country as he did for the school. To him, we, the students, pay special tribute. UaBsals The members of the sophomore class have proved themselves worthy vassals in a mighty castle. Guided by their sponsor, Miss Elizabeth Cornell and their officers Tom Williams, president, Ruth Brittenham, vice president, and Joyce Almquist, secretary, they have participated in many of the extra-curricular and social events of U. T. H. S. The athletic, speech, and music departments were well-represented. We are proud of the class of ’53, and hope that in the future years they will continue with the excellent example they have thus made. Panther Parade was established three years ago for the purpose of encouraging students to write more. It gives students something to look forward to and furnishes an opportunity for them to see their writing in print. The Board of Editors reads and selects the best stories, poems, or essays, which are written by the students and sends them to Augustana for further judging. After they come back from Augustana they are re-written and corrected and the finished product forms the literary publication. Panther Parade. Dorothy Schaeffer. Listen, listen, to the glorious voices — they are the Crusaders riding to battle, their voices lifting as the dust rises beneath their marching feet. Just as these Crusaders sang as they faded into dust of the road, so the Vocal Department of U. T. H. S. raises its voice as it fades into the annuals of our school. Mr. Robert Maurus, the capable and experienced director of the Choir, has a very talented group at his command. The Choir, consisting of 50 members, sings on assembly programs, and presents its Annual Winter Concert as just a few of its major events. A smaller and loudly acclaimed section of our Vocal Department is the Light Opera Chorus. This group is composed of the best and most experienced voices of the Choir. The Light Opera Chorus has a large calendar of social events, as it can be well mentioned among the top vocal organizations in this section of the country. Television and radio appearances along with exchange assemblies highlight the Light Opera Chorus’ activities. This year a new and certainly wonderful extravaganza floated under the U. T. H. S. spotlight. The Operetta, Meet Arizona, first of its kind to be attempted at U. T. H. S. was a new and wonderful show, combining both acting and musical talent. It was directed by Mr. Robert Maurus. Another new organization is the Girls’ Chorus, consisting of 54 members. This group has sung on assembly and participated in the Operetta. The girls acted as usherettes dressed in gay western costumes. Some of them also sang in the Operetta. The Beginners Chorus is composed of beginning vocalists who will soon advance to the Choir. This organization provides experience for the Choir. CHOIR OPERETTA Choir officers: Colleen Smith, librarian: Zona Netzer, president; Gary Hanson, secretary; Sharon Sammon, treasurer. A young man of the village joins him with his flute and there we have our middle ages instrumental group. U. T. H. S.’s instrumental department keenly illustrates how times have changed since our lyre playing minstrel wandered into town. The Concert Band, largest group in this department, boasts 115 members. This organization takes part in student assemblies and presents an Annual Concert. The Marching Band participates in all home football games and most of the Quad-City ones, presenting a variety of shows at each game. The Moline game was the scene of a wonderful display of precision marching by this organization. The Marching Band also participates in parades and this year was a boon in putting over the first Winter Parade in East Moline. Two newly organized groups are the Brass Sextette and the Woodwind Ensemble. Both are made up of the best players in the brass and woodwind sections. The Beginners Band was organized for the purpose of providing a musical background and experience for those members who wish to someday advance to the Advanced Band. LIFE WITH MOTHER Jill Lundeen and Alice Samson discuss former college days as Roger Forrett and Ken McConoughey patiently wait for the discussion to end. You wouldn't be interested in gossip, anyway, fellows. An engagement ring can cause a great deal of trouble and misunderstanding as Jon Larson and Sharon Sammon well know. Jeannine Garrett, Nancy Ryan, and Colleen Smith suffered with each of Mr. Day's moods to their dismay. Here they attend to details around the house — with a bit of gossiping, no doubt. Jean Siefken and Romona Reynolds take time out for a refreshing drink. Did you ask permission, girls? Remember, no late entrances! Mimicing the Day family are Larry Stoneburner, Don Gronwaldt, Helen Larson, and Robbie Caufield. Let's get going — no loafing! The cast consisted of Colleen Smith, Jean Siefken, Jeannine Garrett, Ramona Reynolds, Bill Kutmus, Sharon Sammon, Jill Lundeen, Alice Samson, Nancy Ryan, Les Hillier, Jack Waddell, Ken McConoughey, Roger Forret, Mr. Stevens (Director), Jon Larson, Don Ehlers, and Tom Glatter. THE HEIRESS Jeannine Garrett, fon Larson, and Ramona Reynolds calmly await the beginning act of the play — or maybe they’re just tired! A six months separation doesn't change things as Jean Siefken and Bob Hougan prove. Ken McConoughey, Sharon Sammon, and Colleen Smith pay attention to the camera just before taking their places on stage. THE NATIONAL THESPIANS Troupe 688 of the National Thespian Society was organized at United Township High School in 1945. Its purpose is to inspire the local thespians and provide them with a club for these purposes. With Mr. John W. Stevens as sponsor, Ramona Reynolds served this year as president, Sharon Sammon as vice president, Jean Siefken as secretary, and Ken McConoughey as treasurer. The Heiress” was selected for the National Thespian play. A winter and spring initiation ceremony is held each year to include eligible members. Members are Tom Glatter, Colleen Smith, Helen Larson, Dorothy Pokrajac, Sharon Sammon, Ramona Reynolds, Ken McConoughey, Jean Siefken, Jeannine Garrett, Nancy Ryan, fill Lundeen, Ken Janouski, Roger Haley, Bob Hougan. Don Gronualdt, Roger Forret, Jon Larson, Larry Stoneburner, Aaron Hyman, and Les Hill ter. CONTEST PLAY Representing the drama group from United Township High School in the sectional speech meet at Monmouth, March 10, was The Heiress,” the academy award picture of the year. Jean Siefken as Katherine Sloper, Bob Hougan as Morris Townsend, Sharon Sammon as Aunt Lavinia, and Ken McConoughey as Dr. Sloper performed maturely at the contest. Hating played dramatic scenes throughout most of the play, Jean Siefken gladly shows a smile as Sharon Sammon, just as happy, helps her prepare for a gay elopement. Ken McConoughey and Colleen Smith listen attentively as Sharon Sammon re-lates an amusing incident. Being under the direction of Mr. Stevens for one play affords ample time to discover the many facts of this man’s remarkable character. His name is synonomous with ex- ORATORY-EXTEMP With the help of Mrs. Frederick, six students signed up for oratory. Jeannine Garrett entered the district and sectional speech contest in original oratory while Les Hillier, after winning first place in the district American Legion Contest, won fourth place in the state contest with his original oration. Glenn Dessing, Ken Me-Conoughey, Jewell Craker, and Nancy Hinton signed up for oratorical declamation. Jewell Craker Nancy Hinton ideas into a logical pattern. Tom Glatter, placing in the district and sectional contests, will go to the state contest. Aaron Hyman, Jewell Craker, and Robbie Caufield were on the team. Glenn Dessing Ken McConoughey Each year Mrs. McNab works with students in a comparatively unknown course — Extemper-aneous Speaking. Those few who do participate find their efforts highly rewarding by learning how to organize thoughts and Mrs. McNab Aaron Hyman Being the representative in extemporaneous speaking, ree uires many, many evenings of this kind of work. 1'om Glatter working with Mrs. McNab seems to agree. Tom Glatter delivers a carefully prepared speech to his audience. Jewell Craker DEBATE Having debated all year on the question Resolved: That the American People Should Reject the Welfare State,’’ six debaters ended their season knowing almost every phase of the question. After many nights of discussing and debating, they entered contests at Geneseo, Augustana, Galesburg, and Monmouth. Debate, one of the most time consuming activities, claimed Jewell Craker and Aaron Hyman as affirmatives and Tom Glatter and Ramona Reynolds as negatives this year. Miss Smith Aaron Hyman Win, lose, or draw, these six debaters remained happy. Maybe some day they'll help high-schoolers by judging debates! Jewell, Bryn, Gabriella, Tom, Ramona, and Aaron. Tom Glatter Jewell Craker Discussing plans of action in future debates are Jewell Craker, Gabriella DeGraer, and Aaron Hyman. What’s so funny? Tom Glatter, Ramona Reynolds, Bryn Walmsley, Gabriella DeGraer, and Aaron Hyman evidently approve of Jewell Craker's speech. Ramona Reynolds The negatives, Tom, Bryn, and Ramona plot some surprise for another team's affirmative speakers. Shhh, it’s a secret! DECLAMATION Among the many activities of Mrs. Frederick comes declamation, one of the major speech activities at U.T.H.S. This year Jean Siefken was the representative in the serious readings, Sharon Sammon in comedy readings, and Colleen Smith in verse readings. Mrs. Frederick Jean Siefken Sharon Sammon Joy Gaumer, Jean Siefken. Jeanmne Garrett, Sharon Sammon, Helen Larson, Alice Samson, Jill Lundeen, Nancy Ryan, and Colleen Smith make a winning combination for appearance as well as ability. Jeannine Garrett, representative in original oratory, practices her speech. This part must be funny. Colleen Smith Jeannine Garrett Nancy Ryan and Jill Lundeen listen attentively as Sharon Sammon asks their opinion on an urgent matter. Joy Ann Gaumer Helen Larson Alice Samson Les Hillier serious- ly tells of the problems presented in his original oration. Jill Lundeen Colleen Smith reads her verse book with emphasis and meaning — or can’t you pronounce the word, Colleen?
