Television portrays life through different phases in a variety of telecasts. The 1950 Skyline shows life at United Township High School in a variety of pictures. Your editorial staff in comparing the contents of this annual to television have entitled the three divisions Directors, Performers, and Programs. the . . . SKYLINE HIGH SCHOOL ILLINOIS HERE AT . . . has fun learning . . . U. T. H. S . . . and enjoys many social activities . . . DOiectom Those who guide us are the faculty, or the directors, of United Township High School. They are an important influence on our future. They educate us, understand us, and yet remain our friends. We should like to thank these men and women who are devoted to our education and advancement. All — board members, faculty members, and office help — with ready, willing hands are giving us the opportunity to prepare for our futures. Our Superintendent Mr. L. O. Dawson, superintendent of United Township High School, has many jobs in one. Through the doors of his office pass issues which necessitate much deliberation and debate. As co-ordinator of activities associated with students, faculty, board of education, and public, Mr. Dawson is kept well occupied. Although he is busy, he is always ready to help and advise anyone who is in need of help. Mr. L. O. Dawson Shurtleff College, PH. B. University of Chicago. M. A. Board of Education Seated: Mr. G. H. Third Row: Carol Feuser, Laura Stephenson, Mary Louise Tosetto, Marvel Ingram, Donna Griffin, Helen Larson. The members of the Student Council are the representatives of the students of U. T. H. S. They link the directors and the performers. Only students with high ideals, good character, ambition, and initiative are qualified for these positions. Those selected also should be interested in school government, the principles of diplomacy, and the spirit of cooperation. Every year four candidates are nominated for the offices of advisory board president, and one is elected by popular vote. Bob Hart, Dick Ingram, George Waddell, and Don Van Auwelaer were the leading contenders. George Waddell won the presidency. Bus transportation to the games was provided by this organization. They sponsored a dance and the sale of pencils featuring the varsity basketball schedules. Homecoming was also a main attraction planned by this group. Now focusing our cameras on the classes of U. T. H. S. we see a group of energetic, enthusiastic, and industrious students. Out of school pride they enjoy making this school a finer place to work and play. One hundred and nineteen students qualified for the honor roll. Besides studying diligently, they work wholeheartedly in extra-curricular activities. Many are planning their futures including college, homemaking, industry, and business. John Defebaugh .............................President Richard Miller.........................Vice President Jeannie Braet ... ..........................Secretary Joann Lapaczonek ...........................Treasurer Miss Bernice Howard ..........................Sponsor On our large television screen the image of the senior class fades as they take their fourth and final step into the future, whether they are entering industrial, professional, business, or homemaking fields. As freshmen this class headed the honor roll with twenty-two, and as seniors this class is still on top with thirty-six students named. This group of 201 have participated in all the different phases of school life at U. T. H. S., many being outstanding in sports, speech, journalism, drama, and others. Miss Bernice Howard, our sponsor, has worked with the officers to make our class a success. She has been assisted by Miss Marian Dean, Miss Mildred Carlson, Mr. Lawrence Hoff, and Mr. Paul Oliver. The 1949-1950 girls' tennis team has carried much glory to our school: we should be very proud with the records they have attained. This years team is comprised of ten members. The top three positions are held by Beverly Steiner, Joan Johnston, and Lois Wilson, first, second, and third respectively. In the annual Quad City meet, which was held last October, the girls copped a first and second place in doubles and a second and third place in singles. They also had a very fine record in the matches they played. The team is very ably coached by Miss Luise Piano. For the second consecutive year the sophomores have won the championship of the baseball tournaments which are held every fall. As freshmen they ran over the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This year as sophomores they again captured the honors by beating the freshmen, juniors, and seniors. G. A. A. The story of the play concerned Angie Morrow's seventeenth year — one of the most important years of her life, for she was just beginning to really grow up. The events in the plot take place during the summer after high school graduation and just before the fall of her first college year. Angie had never had many dates, although she had personality and attractiveness. During the summer she meets Jack, a very nice boy who is the baker's son. They are attracted to each other and discover it is mature love. Several of Angie's two-faced girl friends try unsuccessfully to break the deep friendship between Angie and Jack. Their efforts, however, cause a great deal of trouble. Despite this difficulty, Angie and Jack realize that no one can keep them apart. The play ends with Angie and Jack saying good-bye. Angie leaves for college, and Jack plants to continue helping his father in the bakery. Organ music was used throughout the play to enhance the mood and add to the emotional effect on the audience. The play begins by having the Stage Manager tell the audience some of the history of the town, Grover's Corners, N. H., and the character of some oi its citizens. We are introduced to the Gibbs and Webb families, around whom the story of the play is told. The second act concerns the love affair between young George Gibbs and little Emily Webb. Their wedding scene and the days that follow depict the sorrow and happiness that life holds for a young couple. The third act shows the cemetery on the hill and the graves of those who have died within the past several years. Emily Webb, who has died from childbirth, is brought in dressed in her bridal attire. She wishes to re-live the past, but cannot do so. She realizes then that living people know little of true joy and happiness. Truth is to be found only in the future. The absence of scenery or properties caused the audience to notice the acting and react with serious thought and speculation. Dave DeDoncker Negative Debate ' Resolved: That the president of the U.S. should be elected by the direct vote of the people'' was the question the U.T.H.S. team debated so successfully. At the Seneseo meet, Dave DeDoncker, Janice Sohrbeck, and Ramona Reynolds were named as outstanding debaters. Tom Tully, Dave DeDoncker, and Kathryn Pecaut received certificates for excellent debating at the Burlington meet. Another invitational meet which the team entered was the Augustana tournament. Further proof of the team’s ability was shown in the winning of first place in the Northwest Conference tournament at Rock Island. Winning seven out of eight debates entitled them to this honor. As there is no district debate contest, the team proceeded to the sectional contest at Macomb.
