Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1949 volume:

.. Mtm auifc The Skyline is a family property of UTHS. Since circus business, too, seems to be a family affair, being passed from generation to generation, we have chosen the circus for the theme of our annual, fust as a circus includes new attractions and performers each year, a new Skyline is published with new attractions and performers taking their places before the bright lights. In the way the circus typifies happiness, too, we have tried to bring to you, our readers, the happiness and joy connected with the daily lives of the inhabitants of UTHS. As we turn these pages, then, let's hit the sawdust trail to see what have been the big and small attractions during the year of 1948-1949. THE SKYLINE ANNUAL Of LOIS CARLSON Editor-in-Chief GLOY HANNEMAN Literary Editor PAUL ALLAERT Picture Editor ARLENE TONN Business Manager UNITED TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL EAST MOLINE ILLINOIS DEDICATED TO Because we believe that the reputation of this school, or any school, is dependent upon the strength and activity of the mass of its body of students, and because we believe that the future of not only this school, but this nation, rests upon the quality of our average high school citizens, the “Skyline of 1949 is gratefully dedicated to the students of United Township High School, whose being made it possible. —The Skyline Staff THAT ION Under the able and watchful guidance of faculty and board of education, another year has been completed at UTHS. In taming some of the “wild animals at school, our faculty certainly has a full-time job. Each day the students come to understand and appreciate the difficult job which confronts the teachers and administration. Our faculty is recognized as the severest critics, yet the best counsellors and friends in our work. So to the faculty, administration, and board goes a well-earned cheer of thanks for a job well-done. Our Superintendent Mr. L. O. Dawson has the busy job of superintending our school. In his office the various problems of keeping the school system running smoothly are discussed and considered. His friendly advice in the problems of all students has helped a great many. He has been counsellor, guidance worker, lecturer, critic, judge, and companion in our Mr. L. O. Dawson, Ph. B., M. A. work. Having seen thousands of Superintendent students go in and out of the doors of UTHS, he has helped to make those students into better citizens by helping them prepare for life. Every morning at 8:30 the first crack of the whip is heard and where are the students? Usually everyplace but in their seats. But soon everything is under control and they set about to study their chosen subjects. The wide variety of subjects offered at UTHS gives a student every chance to become more acquainted and advanced in the field in which he is most interested. For many it means preparing for future careers; for some a forward to college; for others it is a suitable basis for the homes into which they will go after graduation. But for all, the classrooms of our school give a stable foundation the lives to be led by the students now within these classrooms. Class of 1949 L-a-d-i-e-s and G-e-n-t-l-e-m-e-n ! Step right up and meet the Class of 1949, presented to you by its able officers, Jim Noah, president; Pete Kostadelos, vice-president; Arlene Tonn, secretary; and Don Tyler, treasurer. In reality, we, the class of '49, are leaving our beloved school behind, but in memory, it will always be with us. We are off to grasp new goals beyond our UTHS. Some of us will start college, some will begin a career, and others will meet the future at home; but whatever we do, the qualifications will be met because of the background given us at UTHS. Don Tyler Treasurer In expressing our appreciation, we would like to give special thanks to our advisers and to our sponsor. Most circuses have large rings with all circles pierforming at the same time, displaying different acts. This is comparable to our own UTHS; for here we have many rings, all performing at the same time. Our rings include clubs, publications, advisory board, and many others. Often during our school year, the hand that holds the whip relaxes, and so do we. That's when we all join in to have some fun. This usually means dances, parties, school affairs, and plays to work on and attend. The opportunities are not limited and are offered to both boys and girls. So let's leave the beaten path for a while and take a glimpse at the activities — UTHS style. Advisory Board First row: Carol DeBlieck. Helen Larson, Bobbie Caufield, Margaret Schneck. Fourth row: Pat Hofstetter, Phyllis Kerns, Paul Allaert, Bill Cant. Dick Liedtke, Richard Thomas. Don Tyler, Rose Marie Schatteman. Every large body of people should have some form of representation. It was with this in mind that the Advisory Board was formed to represent the student body of UTHS. Through this channel it was hoped to promote a spirit of co-operation between the faculty and students, to promote interest in the school government as well as the activities and accomplishments of the students of our school. The president is selected by popular vote of the student body and other members are elected by home rooms as their representatives. Through these representatives the students speak. This year's president was John Miller, under whose leadership the council has provided bus transportation to out-of-town games and sponsored a Sock Hop in the cafeteria. Much of the success of our first real homecoming was attributed to the Advisory Board. Other able officers elected were Dick Thomas, vice president and Rose Marie Schatteman, secretary-treasurer. It was planned to promote a more intelligent understanding of the modern world of science and its importance to mankind. In this field changes are constantly taking place, making the meetings very interesting, as material for discussion is never lacking. Eileen Sherwood, played by Guelda Gooding, has stage dreams while Ruth, Donna Sergeant, the intellectual, is more interested in literature. The ringmaster who has proved to UTHS that all the world's a stage . . . is John W. Stevensr who directs all of UTHS's dramatic productions. They are ample proof of his ability to present a drama, comedy, or mystery with the same agile direction. The National Thespian Society is a nonsocial and non-secret organization devoted to the advancment of dramatic arts in the secondary schools. The aims of the society are two-fold: (1) to establish and advance standards of excellence in all phases of dramatic arts, and (2) to create an active and intelligent interest in dramatic arts among boys and girls in the high schools. The National Thespian Society is an “honor or “recognition society in the sense that students are granted membership for having performed meritorious work in dramatic arts and for having met the membership qualifications and standards of their respective troupes. In January many new members were initiated into our troupe at UTHS. When the ceremony was over and the pledge taken, the evening was spent in dancing in the cafeteria, and refreshments were served. The crest of the National Thespian Society illustrates the masques used in the theater many years ago, showing happiness and sadness. All My Sons The Thespian play was the three-act drama All My Sons, by Arthur Miller. Its intensity was great and one could readily see why the play, on Broadway, won the Drama Critics' Award lor 1947. On one side of the conflict of the play is Joe Keller, (played by John Miller), a cheating war contractor v hose desire to make money for his family caused him to ship defective airplane parts. On the other side is his son, Chris, (played by Leonard Janowski,) an idealistic war veteran who condemns this money-loving practicality as murder. Chris Keller and Ann Deever (Margaret Lea-senby) are torn two separate ways. Being in love and yet wanting to be loyal to their families, they try to solve the problems which confront them. The solution comes when Chris realizes that his father had committed the crime. This proves to be too much for Joe and he kills himself, thus bringing a fitting end to the drama. In district the play took third, thus enabling it to go on to the sectional tournament at Macomb, March 11 and 12. There it copped a second, amid stiff competition and advanced to the state tournament at Champaign-Urbana, March 31, April 1 and 2. The entire cast of the Thespians play. The story concerned the complications attendant upon the disappearance, and the subsequently discovered murder, of Magda Swanson, female guest star, during a rehearsal of a mystery-drama at Cherry Payne's summer theatre in Connecticut. Suspicion first falls on Burton James who is discovered to be the divorced husband of Magda. Dexter Ross, Magda's fiance, a New York jeweler, appears at the theatre and demands that the murderer be apprehended. Penny Martin, the young and pretty ingenue who is understudying Magda, and her fiance and the director, Hal Phillips, determine to clear Burton, certain that he is innocent, only to divert suspicion to themselves. Further complications ensue when Madeleine, Magda's French maid, is found murdered. In the final scene, Penny, trapped on a dark stage with the murderer, manages io outwit him with the erratic assistance of Della Watts, the well-meaning but muddle-headed prop-girl of the theatre. Debate Having the force and fire needed for successful debate, this year's team made a good record. At Burlington, Iowa, the speakers took second place, winning six debates and losing two. At the Augustana Tournament, February 4 and 5, our debaters copped fifth place, losing only four and winning eight. Twenty-five schools were present from Illinois and Iowa. UTHS won more debates than any other quad-city school. In Moline for the Northwest Conference meet, they took second place, winning five debates and losing three. At the sectional tournament at Macomb, March 11 and 12, the debaters won four and lost two, coming in behind Rock Island, who won all six. This meant that UTHS would progress to state with a second place. After quite a bit of argument and discussion, Galesburg took the right to go to state by defeating our affirmatives in a debate to take away a tie. Mia Helen K. After choosing the team, the girls traveled to Davenport for a meet. Here Margaret Leasenby began her round of first place winnings with her serious reading, St. Joan. Entered in the district contest were Sharon Sammon representative in comedy with Arsenic and Old Lace, and Margaret Leasenby with St. Joan. Margaret again copped a first place, and Sharon got third, enabling both to compete in the sectional tournament. At this tournament Sharon took fourth and Margaret another first, permitting her to go on to the state meet at Champaign on March 31, April 1 and 2. From the state contest Margaret brought home a souvenir in the form of a medal for winning a fourth place in the serious reading division. All in all, this year the dec team was successful and UTHS is proud of this ring of performers. Jackie Blunko Margaret Leasenby Suzanne Rezner Below are members of the second declamation team. At state Dave participated in the semi-finals. Janet Reed Miss Railsback Jackie Blunke Oratory Mrs. Fredericks In oratory this year Suzanne Rezner represented UTHS, and by winning third and second places, respectively, in the district and sectional tournament, she went on to state. In oratorical declamation, John Miller represented UTHS, and proceeded to the sectional tournament. The other members of the oratorical group who worked hard and did a fine job, will be coming back next year. In addition to giving its annual Christmas Vespers, the choir presented various assembly programs, and gave the traditional Seven Last Words of Christ ' using student soloists from the choir. Singing minstrel numbers, the choir also participated in the Youth Center Show. The Spring Concert was fine, displaying talent combined with hard work. Praise should be given for the fine job it has done in the field of singing, but more praise should be given to Mr. Void, who came to UTHS and ably filled the job of director. Chorus The chorus, also under the direction of Mr. Void, is composed of singers who are beginning and will later, after learning the fundamentals, advance to the choir. For experience, the group had one appearance in which it took part on a general assembly. With such talented groups as this, UTHS will never lack a good choir. • First row. left to right: David Gunlock, Byrn Walmsley, Gilbert Breckling. Armon Baney, Clarence Ryker. Leon Sutton. This year, as every year, UTHS has claimed an excellent band. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Alvar T. Berghult, the band, consisting of 115 members, took part in many spectacular events. Among these was our homecoming celebration, at which the band gave an unforgettable performance, in reference to the year of the presidential election. When there was an exciting game on Friday, a portion of the band could be heard going up and down the halls in the closing minutes of school, announcing our determination to win. Keeping this spirit alive on through the evening at basketball games was the lively Pep Band. When the band presented the general assembly on March 19, they again proved their ability to produce excellent music. Their closing number was the William Tell Overture, and according to the band, the Lone Ranger does ride again! The 22nd annual Spring Concert was as grand as ever. It was presented in the auditorium on April 29. A comic number, A Southern Wedding, was pantomined by the band, besides other features. The performance, as usual, was a sellout. VARSITY fOOTBAU Even though the Panthers had but six lettermen returning this year, they turned in a creditable season on the gridiron. Plagued with injuries and other difficulties throughout the season, the team showed a great deal of spirit and fight. After losing their first game to East Rockford, the Panthers came back with two wins over Kewanee and Ottawa. They then traveled across the river to meet a strong Davenport eleven, which beat the Hill-toppers. After this defeat the Panthers lost four straight. In the last contest of the season the East Moline gridders again got into the win column by trouncing Normal, to end the season with a record of three wins and six losses. The Hilltoppers ran, kicked, passed, and blocked their way to a good-scoring season, despite inexperience, and disabilities, allowing the students and supporters to be proud of the hard-fighting gridders.
