Class of 1949 After three long years of steady climbing upward the class of ’49 is now ready to take the last step to accept the responsibility left to them by the senior class of ’48. In the sports field such athletes as Bill Baltzell, Dick Liedtke, Eugene Rush, Dick Thomas and Leonard Van de Walle have displayed outstanding sports ability in the class. Twenty-three girls have also shown accomplishments in the sports field by being active members in the G. A. A. The class has also presented Dear Ruth” in which they displayed remarkable dramatic ability. Not only in sports and dramatics, but also in declamation, debate, extempore, choir, band and as officers of many clubs, has this class of 210 students made excellent achievements. Seventeen of these students are members of the choir. Phyllis Kerns, accompanist, Margaret Leasenby, soprano, and Verle Gustafson, alto, have been active members of this organization. In the band twenty-nine members of this class have eagerly participated and helped to develop a spirit of co-operation in the school. Some outstanding members in the band are Arlene Tonn, Lois Lee, and John Miller. During the three years these students have attended U.T.H.S. Miss Dorothy Calvert has been their efficient sponsor and adviser and has also been responsible for the attainment and cheerful attitude displayed by these juniors. The class this year has been under the capable leadership of Joan Swafford, president; Paul Allaert, vice-president, and Frank Wright, secretary-treasurer. To the class of ’49 — hats off!
