In planning and producing the 1948 SKYLINE, the editors and staff have tried to present school life at U.T.H.S. in all of its phases. For the sake of clarity the book has been divided into four sections; namely, students, faculty, athletics and activities. It is the belief of the editorial board that school life is brought out in the best possible manner by these divisions. And now to the 1948 SKYLINE — a book of the students, by the students, and for the students. the 1948 Old U.T.H.S. from the front . . . United Township High School of East Moline, Illinois . . . and from the back. Only at East Moline can the student body . . . be taught by a competent faculty . . . be thrilled by a well-organized sports program . . . and be able to enter so many activities. Each and every student has contributed much to the success of his school in both work and play. The students have shown their enthusiastic interest by working hara to make their classes honorable ones. Each class has wholeheartedly endeavored to take its responsibility in sponsoring the social activities of the school. Social activities have not been the only interests of the students, however, for they have also excelled scholastically. For instance, 114 students earned high enough grades to warrant mention on the honor roll. From the very bottom of the freshman class to the top of the senior class each and every student has eagerly attempted to maintain the highest ideals of his school. Class of 1948 J ■n-aCl coo Vresiaef The class of '48 is now passing through the portals of the United Township High School as students for the last time. The graduates are better prepared to meet the future whether it be in the business world, the factory, the sports field, in a profession, in college, or in the home through the various studies and extra-curricula of this school. During the four years in high school this class has become well known in leadership and scholarship, as well as in the extraactivities such as music, dramatics, speech, and sports. The class would like to show its appreciation to all the teachers who have been such a help in these four years. Miss Dorothy Butts Miss Salomea Landd, and Miss Helen Buresh were the freshmen, sophomore, and junior-senior sponsors. Miss Margaret Rieger, Miss Myra Baker, Mr. P. J. Philhower, and Mr. Millard W. Pratt have been the very able senior advisors. For their capable leadership, the students pay homage to the class officers, Jack Coder, president; Maurice Boenitz, vice-president-Shirley Termont, secretary; and Myles Hyman, treasurer. Class of 1949 After three long years of steady climbing upward the class of ’49 is now ready to take the last step to accept the responsibility left to them by the senior class of ’48. In the sports field such athletes as Bill Baltzell, Dick Liedtke, Eugene Rush, Dick Thomas and Leonard Van de Walle have displayed outstanding sports ability in the class. Twenty-three girls have also shown accomplishments in the sports field by being active members in the G. A. A. The class has also presented Dear Ruth” in which they displayed remarkable dramatic ability. Not only in sports and dramatics, but also in declamation, debate, extempore, choir, band and as officers of many clubs, has this class of 210 students made excellent achievements. Seventeen of these students are members of the choir. Phyllis Kerns, accompanist, Margaret Leasenby, soprano, and Verle Gustafson, alto, have been active members of this organization. In the band twenty-nine members of this class have eagerly participated and helped to develop a spirit of co-operation in the school. Some outstanding members in the band are Arlene Tonn, Lois Lee, and John Miller. During the three years these students have attended U.T.H.S. Miss Dorothy Calvert has been their efficient sponsor and adviser and has also been responsible for the attainment and cheerful attitude displayed by these juniors. The class this year has been under the capable leadership of Joan Swafford, president; Paul Allaert, vice-president, and Frank Wright, secretary-treasurer. To the class of ’49 — hats off! The Sophomore class has been outstanding in many ways. Com prised of 272 eager and ambitious students, this class of 1950 is very active in sports, clubs and many other activities. The girls n G. A. A. participated in many of the activities provided, and many of the boys have gone out for basketball, football, baseball, golf, tennis, and track. Theodore Jackson played on both the varsity and the sophomore football teams, and Santiago Sandoval won a silver plaque for the most improved player of the year. Santiago Sandoval also served on the varsity basketball team along with Don Van Auwelaer. The three Sophomore cheerleaders chosen this year—Donna Williams, Talithia Davidson, and Pat Sweet — aided their sophomore team to many victorious battles throughout the basketball season. The sophomores were well represented in the clubs. Many of the students have also gone out for debate, extemporaneous speaking, declamation, and dramatics. They also show talent in the music field, with 24 members in the chorus and 15 in the choir The sophs are well represented in both beginners and advanced band. The class, with 325 members, is one of the largest ever to enter UTHS. In the sports field the greenies were predominant. Even though the football team was severely handicapped, the 37 members made a good showing. The basketball team, also capable of coping with the foe, was urged to win by the Freshman cheerleaders, Rita Olsen, Sylvia Bedeian, and Alice Brown, who were picked by the Student Council. Approximately 75 girls were members of the Girls’ Athletic Association and shared their daily problems with the other sportsters. A new club known as the Freshman Y-Teen has been recently organized with 75 members taking active part in it. The band under the direction of Alvar Berghult has six freshman twirlers and six actual band members. Other freshmen have participated in the choir, chorus, debate, and declamation. In the annual miniature float parade held before the Moline football game, Mr. Louis Josserand’s freshman homeroom won a prize for the most humorous float. This year the football team had its best record since 1941. Although the team was very light, they were full of the fight that wins games. However, bad luck seemed to plague the Holmesmen most of the season and, because of numerous injuries and a lack of replacements, the team was able to coagulate only a 500 record. Great among the Panther gridders were Don Salmonson, selected for Silvis Fan’s Club plaque as the most valuable player; Bill Heitmann, voted best tackier; Keith Untiedt, voted best blocker; and Yatch” Sandoval, selected as the most improved player during the season. Basketball The Panther hardwood squad of the '47 - ’48 season started off the season by trouncing Aledo 42-34. The starting five consisted of Yatch” Sandoval and Don VanAuwelaer at the forward positions, Dick Liedtke at the pivot post, and Bill Baltzell and Bill Boyle at the guard slots. Although the quintet won only a small percentage of their games, a commendable record was set. Yatch” Sandoval and Bill Baltzell came through with second team honors on the all-conference team. Yatch” finished the season with high point honors with 225 points; Bill Boyle came in second with 201; Bill Baltzell third with 168; Dick Liedtke fourth with 140; and Don Salmonson fifth with 135 points. Don Salmonson suffered a broken toe early in the season which kept him out of the opening games and hindered him throughout the season. By reaching a total of 967 points for the season, the Panthers gained an average of 38.6 points per game; however, the opponents’ total was 1060, giving them an average of 42.2 points per game. Although the cagers had a poor record in the record books, their fighting determination was exceptionally high. The Ray Holmes Free Throw Trophy” was awarded to Don Salmonson who won it with a percentage of .569. Don was also elected by his teammates as honorary captain of the ’47-’48 season. Ten days later the Panther Cubs lost another heart-breaker to Calvin Cool-idge of Moline in an exciting double overtime. This team, under the tutelage of Coach Bob Goodell, lost only two games out of a possible fourteen. Because this Frosh team thoroughly trounced most of its adversaries, it is hoped around UTHS that in the future these freshman athletes will set as fine an example in sportsmanship and athletic ability as they have shown this season. There is much more to school life than studying, even though studying is of major importance. High on most students’ lists of pleasant school memories are the activities in which they have participated. Activities keep the students in touch with the social side of school, with their friends, and with their favorite teachers in a more informal way than the regular classes. Here also the girls and boys can spend some of their pent up enthusiasm and youthful energy in such a way that it is beneficial to both themselves and to the school. Besides this the activities are lots of fun. At U.T.H.S. there are many clubs and other organizations whose achievements are a source of pride to those who helped attain them as well as those who only witnessed the events. G.A.A. Carlson We made it!” Isn’t it wonderful!” These were some of the exclamations heard in the Key staff room when the paper recently received a first class rating from the National Scholastic Press Association rating bureau. The papers are graded each semester for various qualities. For the last three years the paper has been printed commercially. It is now a four page paper published bi-weekly except during vacations. In naming the school paper, the school emblem, a key, was used. The Key unlocks the door to a fuller knowledge of school functions. Kenny DePaepe, Shirley Termont, Belle Ramsey, Darlene Lafevre. It is a representative body elected by the students. Besides the everyday matters which were discussed during the meetings the council sponsored a dance, joined the National Association of Student Councils, and sent four delegates to the state convention of student councils at Peoria. The board also selected the varsity and sophomore cheerleaders and participated in the organization of the weekly assembly programs. The president of the council, Ralph Stagner, was elected at the regular election of president which took place in March, 1947. Bill Boyle, Pat Pendleton, and Pat Walker were elected to their respective offices at the first meeting in September. These four have worked hard to lead the Student Council through a successful year. Choir The Choir, consisting of 58 voices, gave three major programs, a Christmas vespers service, an Easter cantata The Seven Last Words , and a spring concert, during the year and assisted in various other performances such as the G.A.A. gym show, general assemblies, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. With Mr. Harvey L. Pierson, as director and Phyllis Kerns as accompanist, our choir can truly claim success for the year. To be sure, a visit with this group would prove that Hard work done faithfully, achieves success”, as Mr. Harvey L. Pierson director, and Ruth Long, accompanist, help to blend harmony and beauty with these youthful singers. Concert Hand The UTHS band, consisting of approximately 110 members, is one of meritorious achievements and fine performances Last summer in August they journeyed to Springfield to the state fair and left with the Governor’s Award, the highest award given in their class. A trophy was presented to the band as a whole and each member received a medal for this achievement. At the Fourth of July celebration, the band made another appearance. The gala Mississippi Valley Music Festival was made even more so by the performance of the concert band. When football season rolled around, the band took to the field and marched for every home game. At all the home basketball games a group of the members provided music at halves in the Pep Band. The annual spring concert was presented April 30 before a filled auditorium. The band ended the year’s performances by playing at commencement exercises. An added inspiration to the band this year was its new uniforms which added eye-catching appeal and made the school even prouder of them! Director: Alvar T.
