Major Nagel is a Law and Marine Corps Practi- cum Professor and helps coach the men's rug- by team. But what really defines his time at the Academy is a quote written in large letters on his dry erase board: lT'S ABDUT THE MIDSHIP- MEN. As Major Nagel explains it, Loyalty goes both ways...I battled for the Midshipmen, because it is not about being liked, it is about doing the right thing. He has battled so much that he was sur- prised he was allowed to receive this award, but as he puts it, you do not work hard for rewards because what makes a difference at the end of the day is the effect you have on those around you. Major Nagel has indeed had a profound effect on each member of the Class of 2005. Major Jeff N agel, USMC Gunny Sergeant Baker came to the Academy after being a scout sniper and is now the 30th Compa- ny Senior Enlisted. He is also involved with sev- eral teams on the yard. What he is really known throughout the brigade for, though, is pacing every single mile-and-a-half run for all thirty companies during the PPT forthe last three years. He believes that if he can pass thirty runs, he can motivate the midshipmen to believe they can pass one. He says, I will never ask the Mids to do something I am not able to do myself? Two years ago in June, Gunny Baker fell four stories while helping to run a Marine Corps summer training program, breaking multiple bones in his body. The doctors believed he would be learning to walk again after 6 months, but at the 6 month mark he was training for a mar- athon. He not only finished, but ran a personal best. The first thing you read when you crack a book on leadership is that you lead by example. Gunny has been an excellent example to our class. YSGT Judd Baker, USMC Honorary Graduates 23
